  1. I have a French edition of "Hot Doggett", with discographical notes Percy is on "Early bird", "Percy speaks" "Honey boy" (Oct 52, Feb 53 & Aug 55) Irving "Skinny" Brown is on "High heels" (May 54) FRANK HEPPINSTALL is on "Gumbo", "Wild oats", Quaker city", "Oof", "Shove off" & "True Blue" (Oct 54 & Mar 55) Clifford Scott is on "Squashy" (Jan 56) Clifford Scott & Percy France re on "Who's who" (Jan 56) Frank Heppinstall, to my mind, is a greatly under-rated tenor player. MG
  2. That's interesting, Paul. I see most of the album is Lynn Hope. Is that material he recorded for King? (I think I have all or most of his Aladdin stuff.) MG
  3. Thanks! Where would i find the lionel hampton cd? Amazon.com has it for $7.74 - GO GO GO!!!! Almost all the ones recorded by King after '56. I think he's on some of the Columbia ones - "Oops"? I think you've got that one. I think you've got "Hot Doggett", too. He's only on a couple of tracks of that one, 'cos it's mostly early cuts. He was with Doggett from '56 to about '61. By the way, as well as "Mr Honky Tonk is back in town", there's another on the same label "Texas tenor", which is perhaps even a little better. And I knew there was another fantastic one. Charles Kynard's first album, "Where it's at" on PJ. Totally brill and worth whatever you have to pay to get it. Two I haven't got of his own were Clifford Scott plays the big ones - World Pacific Lavender Sax - World Pacific I think they may be a bit dubious, y'know. Though I'd buy them if I saw them cheap. MG
  4. Is that Billy Larkin out on Fresh Sound? That's one I'd like to upgrade - superb album! MG PS - but it has the sleeve for "Pygmy" - is it a twofer? Ah - just found it on Amazon.uk cheapish. Has all the tracks from "Pygmy" and "Blue lights", but in mixed up order (oh I hate it when they do that!). Still, I've ordered it Thanks for the heads up NS! MG No problem! I'm nearly finished spinning it, it sounds good. These 2 sessions sound better to me then 'Hold On!' Which i have on LP (in mono, i believe, wish i had a stereo copy!) These are the best two - but there's good stuff throughout his discography - not a lot on his last album, though. MG

  6. MG - Check this thread for links to the Organissimo holiday tracks. I think they're still active links (I can't access MP3s from this computer, so I can't confirm that). Thanks Aggie - I'll try it later. MG
  7. Thanks Lon - I've been wondering about replacing all my old Ray Swingtime/Downbeat LPs. MG
  8. Listening to it now - most charming. Similar sort of feel to Compay Segundo. Wish I spoke Spanish. MG
  9. Postman just brought me this Haven't started listening to it yet. Looking forward to it. Was it Durium or Ubu who recommended it? Can't remember now. MG
  10. I didn't know there was an Organissimo Christmas disc. ? MG
  11. Lionel Hampton Paris All Stars - 1953 gig with Clifford blowing up a STORM! If you can find it, Wild Bill Davis' Zurich Concert has good Clifford Scott. Even more difficult, his own album "Out front" with Les McCann on PJ is great! Of course, there is a raft of Doggett recordings, of which I know you have some. He also takes a great solo or two on Ray Charles "My kind of jazz", which I think is available - and Blue Mitchell and Bobby Bryant and Andy Ennis - the tenor player on Doggett's "Wow" are on there, too. Can't think of any more at present, but I'll remember some later, I expect. MG
  12. I certainly would not start an exploration of the Swingville series with that one . It's a rather dull , uninspired record . A far better starting point is Budd Johnson's Let's Swing , with positively magisterial playing by Budd , and a fine supporting cast . Edit : Someone should go here and grab the Hal Singer for $4.99 . "Blue stompin'" is a very good album, but it was not originally a Swingville. As noted above, lots of the SV series were reissues of PR albums. I think my favourites are "Night Hawk" and "Buck Jumpin'". MG

  21. source: http://entertainment.iafrica.com/music/archives/197798.htm I have an album of his - "Firebird" on Jive Jazz, from 1989. It's good, but the arrangements are a bit stiff and stilted. So I wasn't over-inclined to folow him up. What do YOU think of it, young Sir? MG
