  1. All that stuff has been monolithically put down because of the arrangements. But if you ignore them, those guys were often still playing from the heart. (Course, Lou usually DIDN'T, but there you is.) MG
  2. AND Lou Donaldson (and Sam Rivers and Sabu). MG
  3. Earlier - Randy Weston - Carnival - Freedom (Black Lion edition) MG
  4. Since it's come up again, I think I should just note that the Grant Green Appreciation Society of Wales is ever so aggrieved at the obvious failure to mention the guitarist on the session. MG (on behalf of GGASW)
  5. Happy Birthday Jim, and many more of them. I can't thank you enough for what you do here, as well. Thank you, Jim. Thank you, Jim. Thank you, Jim. Thank you, Jim. Thank you, Jim. Thank you, Jim. 6. Yes, also. But that's something of a slight fusion album. One I like a lot. I've seen Blue's Mainstream LP referred to as "Soul village" and "Blue Mitchell". It may be European or British issues had a different title. MG
  7. Well, go ahead. Here's a good place to start http://www.geocities.com/fbessem/frames/framemus.html MG OMG MG this is a HUGE site! if you get a chance can you PM me some recommendations? Moments - that's like someone coming on this site and saying, "er, what jazz is good?" I sent you a few things by pretty ladies - which do you prefer? Any of the stuff on the BFT you get? MG loved it all! i was just hoping for a couple "must gets"!!! I'll PM you later. MG
  8. This song is awesome! Thanks for bringing it to my attention, MG. It is. Most Mandinke credit Sekou Bembeya Diabate, the guitarist on that, with having reinvented their traditional music in the '60s - ie he's the Mandinke Bird. MG
  9. I checked, on Amazon 1 cd is $6.98, and 2cd's costs $9.47 for shipping to Europe. so CDUniverse is indeed less expensive, yes. JB In the end, you've got to take shipping costs into account. Amazon.fr are very heavy on the postage charges. They charged me 7.60 euro (plus VAT) for 2 CDs earlier this month - and we ain't far away - you could practically chuck them here Trouble is, there are African things you can't get elsewhere (without going to Paris). MG

  11. Really? I thought it was all about herb... Course it is, but done as a sixties romantic comedy. Cute, as you sed. MG
  12. Nah - PC packed up; then I had a few days in Paris. And it wasn't back from the menders until yesterday... MG
  13. Awesome audience - I'm surprised he wasn't mobbed. So who was that organist? MG
  14. Marcello - what a great photo! Thanks for posting that. My fave bit of Larry won't impress the musicians, I fear It's the chordal sequence at the climax of "Testifyin'"; it just feels so fuckin' heavy! MG Oh and PS - shouldn't this be in the Hammond Zone?
  15. The Mainstream album to GET is "Blue Mitchell" (or is it called "Soul village"?) MRL315 - but I want one first!!!!! That one has Walter Bishop, Jimmy Forrest, Larry Gales and Doug Sides and it's all beautiful. Wattaband! Wattaneffinband! I reckon it the second best album Blue ever made! Very short - only half an hour - but we're talking quality here, folks. MG
  16. Another piece of good news! MG
  17. Yes indeed! Viva Bo! MG
  18. Thanks chum! It's been bad without my regular visits (well, some of the time). MG
  19. I tend to think that CD Universe is cheaper than Amazon.com for shipping fees to Europe. The last two CDs I had from CDUniverse (April) (one package) was $8.49. MG
  20. "Mustang" is a very nice album. "Shaker heights" is a fabulous track. Rest is all pretty good. I couldn't do without it. MG
  21. Had a look now - great site Mike - thanks for all the work you've obviously put in. Haven't read the bio yet but it looks very interesting indeed. MG
  22. You can get 'em both on Fantasy twofers, LAL. Coupled with "Soulful drums" and "Brother Jack". PR24220 and PR24256. Maybe better value. MG
  23. I think the twofer you may mean has Lou's "Rough house blues" and Oliver Nelson's "Fantabulous" coupled. It was issued as a double LP and I think I've seen it as a CD release. The tracks on the two Pattons are mostly short, but there are a couple of long ones with some good Patton work. It's a good buy. Goodbye MG
  24. Just to make sure I don't forget to look when I get a moment... MG
  25. It's a good combination - I'm going to get it. I wish they'd do more Lou Donaldson Argo/Cadets on CD. Well, all of them really. MG
