The Magnificent Goldberg

I rather like El Chicano. I was just listening to their second album, 'Revolucion' and wondering, as there is quite a bit of stuff that sounds like rock, how they compare with Santana. I've heard almost nothing of Santana (I do have a heavy prejudice against Columbia, to be honest) except, perhaps 'Supernatural', bits of which seemed to being played all the time in restaurants and bars when I visited Namibia in 2000. Seemed to be OK, but not for me, I thought. But I hadn't heard El Chicano then. My thought is that Santana is a rock band with Latin influences, while El Chicano is a Latin band with jazz, funk, soul and rock influences. So, what thoughts do you more knowledgeable people have on the two bands, please? MG

Of course, for me, the James Brown band had it all! Not very current, of course, but very, very sharp. Not much mention of Latin big bands, I see, so here's a few I like: Tito Puente Tito Rodriguez Eddie Palmieri Machito Ray Barretto My personal preference, but lots wouldn't say it was a jazz band, is for Perez Prado - for swing and general unabridged funkiness. Seems like a portmanteau word. "Insa" meaning "lack of" or "not." Kind of a slangy way of saying her walk was not painful or sad to look at, that is, her walk was nice to watch. Yeah, you could well be right. The tune itself may throw some light on this. It's by Edgar Hayes. MG

Albums are not in genres, because genre is per song. This makes sense because a movie soundtrack, say, or any various artists compilation, can have songs in different genres on the same album. But if you look at your collection in Songs view, where you see columns for Name, Time, Artist, Album, etc., you can add a column for Genre. Just right-click on the column headers and click on Genre. Thank you - that works. And I see I have all the Ray Charles in the correct genres. And Dizzy's, too. You can search for artists you think should be in more than one genre. But to find out if there are artists you've incorrectly put into more than one genre, you need to plough through the list. A bit of a drag. But, well, you can do it. MG

I still haven't worked out how to display what genre an album's in when I'm looking at them by artist. Is this possible in v12? I'm sure it used to be on v10. MG
