  1. I read the first and second volumes years ago but have put off starting this, the final volume. The 1200 pages seem a formidable read but I've decided to start the new year in bulldog spirit.
  2. The Good Wife Johnny B Goode
  3. Mannish Boy Our Man In Havana The Man Who Never Was
  4. Sad news. My condolences.
  5. Disc 8 Sal Salvador - Juicy Lucy. I much prefer this to the Starfingers session on Disc 7, on which his guitar is lost in the fussy mix. Here he comes on clear and strong with a piano trio adding to the punch, not diluting it.
  6. Little Weed Bill & Ben Ben & Jerry
  7. I don't think she has an especially memorable voice but she does put it to good use. Her piano playing and arrangements are impressive. Check out her Live At The Jazz Standard double set.
  8. Panama Red Lebanon Blonde Kif Richards
  9. Terrific, underappreciated.
  10. Given the unavaoidable overlap in release dates, a few were actually released in 2016 but I was unable to see them until this year. In no special order. Dunkirk Blade Runner 2049 My Cousin Rachel Lady Bird Lady Macbeth Silence Jawbone Jackie I Am Not Your Negro Paterson Personal Shopper 20th Century Women To Walk Invisible
  11. Joan Didion : The Center Will Not Hold - Griffin Dunne (2017) Very interesting. It does what good documentaries are supposed to do, makes you want to know more about the subject. I'm almost embarrassed to admit to barely knowing her, but have been busy reading several of her articles and short essays on line.
  12. Steve Kuhn - Waltz Red Side
  13. Lady Bird - Greta Gerwig (2017) Sweet and very enjoyable. Writing, acting and direction all first class. I've seen a lot of films featuring Greta Gerwig but here she proves she can direct, and very well too. Soairse Ronan is perfectly cast and as good as she was in Brooklyn.
  14. Mark Felt : The Man Who Brought Down The White House (2017) Being a sucker for all things related to Watergate, I really liked this timely take on the Deep Throat story, so much so that I watched it twice. https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2017/09/mark-felt-the-man-who-brought-down-the-white-house-review/541053/
  15. Not heresy. It surpasses the original as an immersive work of art, both visually and emotionally. It's made with such skill, thoughtfulness and empathy, with Roger Deakins camera lifting it to a Kubrick level. The missus doesn't comment on films very much but she was also blown away and fondly compared it to our cinema viewing of Blade Runner on it's first version release. I think it will eventually be seen as one of the greatest SF films of all time.
  16. It's really great. You'll be amazed.
  17. Blade Runner 2049 - Denis Villeneuve (2017) Brilliant. A very worthy companion to the original. I loved it.
  18. Yes, Merry Xmas. It doesn't exist here of course, it's just an ordinary day. Our Xmas lunch was my vegetable pulao rice, tandoori chicken and channa masala . The missus then dished up a plate of pineapple, pears, German Xmas cake and vanilla ice cream.
