  1. Got my package yesterday, two times "Symphony" and once "Camden '70". Gave one listen to "Symphony" so far and am playing it again right now - sounds mighty great! Having issues though with the shop (themusicindex.com, the one you end up when going via the link provided in post #1) - they put a total value of 40£ (plus 9£ shipping, makes 49£), instead of the total (including shipping) 35£. This meant I had to pay around 20€ for VAT and custom taxes. I'm working on getting that back, but I have low hopes. I don't think I've ever had this happen ... I wouldn't think it's necessary to tell them to please not put too high but a correct value on the custom's declaration
  2. Gee, my best wishes to Mr. Haden, love his music!
  3. very sad news ... haven't explored much of his conductions, but I always enjoyed whatever I heard, also his appearances on cornet.
  4. Plenty of big sets on backorder, yes ... as for Selects, I wonder if the Bobby Hutcherson will ever be back at all! Says end of Januar 2013, which is now ... let's hope that's roughly true, I just want it before it goes the way of the dodo, too! That one has been on backorder for like seven years (at least that's how long it feels to me).
  5. I'd think so, too! I rang them up to ask and that's the answer I got, and the guy even had the guts to add: "and now, what exactly is your question?" - ha! No use debating with someone like that! The fees they add here are about the same, but around 50€ is tax- and fee-free (same if it's Europe or overseas though, as we're not part of the former either). Jazzmessengers can be asked about the declaration value, too, btw - only did it once so far and it worked fine, now I'm waiting for the Threadgill from them (Mosaic says "second half of 2013", that can mean nearly another year of waiting, which I'm not patient enough for right now, sorry!)
  6. Oh, it's only spot tests here, too ... I just had some back luck, I guess!
  7. Good to hear! Hope you'll stay a customer! An alternative (sometimes a bit cheaper) for European orders is the shop jazzmessengers.com from Barcelona (they're a real store with mail order, as I understand it). Excellent service and fast delivery, too (though delivery can of course be slowed down massively by customs or your country, happened to me quite often and with annoying taxes and fees lately ... even if they just do a routine check and the result is: no taxes due, I've got to pay for them doing that check, now if that ain't crazy ...).
  8. Oh, Lola, too! Wonderful film! I just wonder what else will be in there, as it's plenty of discs. Will do some searching as well, then! Found this on the FNAC site: I'm sold! Taken from there, contents are: 1-Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (1/2) 2-Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (2/2) + Lola + La Baie des anges + Les 7 péchés capitaux 3-Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (1/2) 4-Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (2/2) + L’Evènement le plus important depuis que l’homme a marché sur la lune 5-The Young Girls of Rochefort (version américaine des Demoiselles de Rochefort) 6-Peau d’âne 7-Lady Oscar 8-Parking / Trois places pour le vingt-six 9-Suites symphoniques : Peau d’âne (suite symphonique) / Les Demoiselles de Rochefort (version instrumentale) / Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (suite symphonique) 10-Maquettes, essais, séances de travail, play-backs 11-Reprises et relectures : Bill Evans, Tony Bennett, Stéphane Grappelli, Sergio Mendes, Catherine Michel, Isabelle Aubret
  9. What will be in there? All the film soundtracks? What are they? I'm very tempted if only be the wonderful experience that catching "Les Demoiselles de Rochefort" in the movies was, but ... I'd like to know a bit more!
  10. He's been hyped to a point that I never felt I needed to check him out ... but I think I got a freebie disc with a few tracks from French Jazz Magazine/Jazzman somewhere, will have to look for it.
  11. Finally dug up the shoebox from under piles of other classical discs ... All of discs one, two and six is in the box only with the NBC Orchestra, Debussy's "La Mer" with the NBC and Philadelphia Orchestras. Not sure about disc three, some of it may be on Volume 72 (a 2CD set with the BBC Symphony Orchestra) in the box. Those two discs also contain the Beethoven Symphonies 1, 4, and 6, but not Symphony No. 7 (discs four and five of the ICON). I guess most of discs three to five is the overlap, while some of those and all of discs one, two and six is not in the big box. But still I don't really see the need for owning this new EMI box, too ... if there's any piece not part of the big box, it must be hidden among the overtures and show pieces on disc three.
  12. Many thanks for those reports and remembrances! Fascinating to gain some more knowledge around those great albums! Oh how I'd wish there were more recordings from that early stage of AACM music!
  13. Very sad news. Short LA Times obit: http://jazztimes.com/articles/72009-pianist-rahn-ron-burton-dies-at-78
  14. Maybe you can record your sing-along and issue a "commented version"? I'm sure the texts will be easier to understand with your voice added
  15. Thanks, Larry. Is there anything else you can share about the playing of Gaddy (and of Charles) that you gained from in-person experience? Very sad, such early deaths. A stroke, at what age? Clarke sure has an amazing presence on "Song For" and can virtually be felt and heard at each and every moment!
  16. sung texts you mean?
  17. ... if there is one? I've owned a CD of Joseph Jarman's "Song For" for many years now, it took me a while to "get" it ... I'm still rather the Roscoe Mitchell type when it comes to the AEC, but Jarman is growing more and more ... and "Song For" has been considered a favorite for quite a while now, a marvellous album, as I'm sure most folks here know! Anyway, there's a wonderful piano player on it by name of Christopher Gaddy. He seems to be virtually unknown, J.B. Figi doesn't say much about him in his liner notes ("Pianist Christopher Gaddy has constellations at his fingertips. He also plays miscellaneous percussion on this album." - that's it, whatever the first phrase is supposed to mean .... that he's got many abilities as a piano player maybe?). A quick google search of what's been said about him on this board doesn't bring up more than a few mentions when there were discussion of artists with the smallest recorded legacy, artists you wish had recorded more, or similar threads. So, what's the story of Christopher Gaddy? Larry, Chuck, anyone? A search for Charles Clark, the just-as-wonderful bass player on "Song For" brought this post to light that I didn't find in my previous searches: (click on the snapback icon in the quote to be lead to the original thread - this one:)
  18. some new ones coming up: Never heard of Kapell, but the Perlman looks interesting, so does the Boulez!
  19. Some of my information is in my DNA, some ain't ... and I'm much more into Erwin Chargaff than smart experts of marketing and visibility or whatever that crap that our corporate world demands. Note sure if that's in my DNA though.
  20. Indeed! But the pagacking is silly ... mine arrived rather crumpled after an overseas ride. Too much cardboard involved, not stable enough. But it doesn't matter, I still like it very much!
  21. So, did Miles prefer green or white onions? And did he share my liking for a Grimbergen every now and then? My own set should is on the way now, together with the new Barney Wilen disc! (But tonight, it will be Leffe brune)
  22. Yep, some mighty fine stuff on it, even though it's a bit rambling all in all ... but then with Wardell, Dexter and Criss, who am I to mind that!
  23. Got the Festival 2LP set of Hines playing Gershwin today ... what's the story with the differently coloured covers? Mine is the orange one.
  24. Wasn't it out on that 'Complete Emarcy' Cannonball twofer put out on Verve as a 2CD? No, that one had "Sophisticated Swing", "En Route", "Sharpshooters" and Nat's "To the Ivy League". Only the quintet material ... too bad indeed!
  25. Not sure I have any such old ECMs, but all the ones I've listened to have been good. (There are several ones I've never played yet, I buy them used, so it's carpe diem ... and some just stack up.)
