Strange, no? One would think he as president wouldn't "think", but *know*...

There was that test game they played against the Swiss, just before the world cup started - there was that one marvellous scene, where an itallin dived, his face performing at least a whole Verdi-opera, but in the middle of it he stopped to check if the ref was watching him, and then on it went... They should get cards for doing that, too!

Mike, this disc is quite a trip, to many places, from classical to ethnical... mainly lots of beautiful (in a good sense) music. I'm not sure if there really is anything that does connect all the tracks (#1-#12, that is), but it might be some kind of musical honesty? It's all warm and direct music that does not try to dazzle with technical things - that's what I meant with "beautiful", I guess. It's obviously useless to make any guesses, and I just took a couple of notes while listening (again only background listening while at work...) #1 Hmmm... sounds like something classical channelled through some other kind of mind? Or like some silent film accompaniment... #2 Marimba, balafon? Very nice easy one, I like the warm mood a lot! #3 Very nice sequencing, Mike, from #1 to #3! Similar to #1 again, but with more attack. Still very moody. #4 Wow! Sounds very familiar... some 20s or 30 piece for saxophone and piano? Good one! #5 Fits in nicely again... I don't have a lot to say about these moody piano pieces... not things I'd listen to all that often, but quite nice. #8 Hmmm... can't say I don't like this voice. What language's she singing in? Nice bass and drums below! Someone who knows how to handle them brushes, very nice! My favourite track of this disc so far. #9 Very nice... reminds me of Haden/Bley's "Ballad of the Fallen"... acoustic guitar and fat bass sound fit very well, tenor is good, too, with full-bodied sound that (imo) just manages to escape the tenor macho-clichés. Another favourite track! #10 / #11 Nice sequencing again here. Not much I can say... I like the second tune quite a bit, me likes some accordion in a nice setting like this. ******* #12 Not sure what to make of this. Sounds pretty interesting on first listen... ******* #13 Wow! Pathetic voice and chipmunks... great one! Reminds me of that sped-up vocal duo the Elliott fellow (trumpet, mellophone, vibes) had in the sixties... great! Goes to quite a few places afterwards. Tons of fun in here! #14 "Für Elise"... like this one a lot!

Do check out "Outland" if you have a chance, P.L.M. - it's very fine, in my opinion!

Dizzy Gillespie Verve/Phillips Small Group Sessions
king ubu replied to Ron S's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The Stuff/Dizzy was part of the (terrific, mind me!) Stuff Smith set, and with Mosaic's (debatable) policy of not releasing sessions more than once, it's quite clear it couldn't be included again. Makes sense to me, as the Smith Mosaic was around until a couple of years ago. Also there was that Smith-Peterson-Gillespie 2CD release which included the Smith/Dizzy date, as well. I am not really sure about this Verve/Phillips set... seems like too much of it has been around on single CDs - in the end I'll be weak and get it and probably love it, but this is not one I'll jump for right now. -
Yes, that's the one... and it was down when I started this thread, with no notice left about re-booting or whatever... the only thing I got was a page that told me this site didn't exist. Very strange! Glad to see it back again!

I only recently found out about Koenig's film career... it's mentioned in the liners to the 4CD Contemporary Story set, which the 2001 crooks had for a few euro-zlotys, recently. Don't have it at hand, but it's pretty obvious that he was talented there, too, working with William Wyler (swiss origin, btw, swiss name, at least). ***** Is that Gitte CD reissue worth the many $$ it goes for? She's mostly been associated with what's the worst offense to culture them Krauts invented ever since 1945... yuck!

Happy birthday!

same here for the first name, but (of course due to the german-speaking background), I'm inclined to say Neidlinger with the first syllable as the "i" in "high". That would be the german spelling - the name does sound old-yurpeen anyway, but I really don't know. Or first name "bu-el" (Bu as in Blakey's nickname, without the "iuw"-twist that's in "bew"?)

The website www.allumesdujazz.com used to list tons of independent french jazz releases, amongst others by the whole Nato family of labels... anyone knows what happened?

Your biggest (gasp) Mosiac order?
king ubu replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I forgot to mention that my last two or so orders arrived without me having to pay *any* custom taxes - just tell them to mark it as "educational sample", that will do the trick! The sets I remember going through with this were the O'Day and the Krupa/James, both more expensive than custom allows, with both no problem at all. -

king ubu replied to tjobbe's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
so you won't get scolded? -
Coles also is on this fine disc:

Claudio Puntin!

happy birthday!

Not sure how much I like that one... but Coles quite easily outshines Byrd. Very much a Pearson date, moreso than the "Little Johnny C", which is fine with me, but not Coles' best. The quartet album Chuck mentions above is a great one!

I would have -as I was 2h earlier than you my friend - but also no response so far..... alright, so I've saved some $$

Thanks, Kevin! I'm starting to believe it, then! Great!!! Hey! Why didn't you believe ME... ? sorry, I wasn't aware that you had seen the discs in real... gets clear from re-reading your post, though!

Sepp is one corrupt guy, I tell you! His name should be added in the dictionnary of synonyms! But that was so ridiculous! Why don't the referees get any help from some additional referees viewing the tv images? This is not stone age any longer!
