Could someone here point me to an (official?) website that has the wording of the US immigration act of 1924 (and later amendments or suspension etc)? Looking for it for something I got to do at University. On the run, glad about any help!

So there's hope for more US Bethlehem reissues! Even if the Rhino/Avenue don't sound as great as the Japanese, at half the prize I prefer them muchly... all the above stuff is good, "East Coasting" is terrific, the Dexter is grand, the Ellington and other Mingus are very good, too... but all of these could be reissues of their own Rhino releases (which were available only for a very short time, I think)... let's hope they'll release some reissues that have not been around for some time (not counting Japan - seems anything has been around there), as well!

Aren't we all? Also: who's that friend in Switzerland? I always thought I was the only jazz fan here! Received today (but paid earlier): Jack Teagarden: Jazz Great (Bethlehem/Avenue/Rhino)

Thanks for typing this up, Milan! Another thing that is often overlooked, in my opinion, is that Lunceford had a bunch of terrific soloists, too. Take Willie Smith, for instance. I just listened to some of those Granz Jam Sessions yesterday, and Smith has not the slightest problem appearing at the side of Johnny Hodges or Benny Carter, he's right up there. But then, who still talks about Willie Smith today, except for the bunch of weirdos that is we...

Could be... the engineer has a Dutch name (Rudie van Lieshout) - maybe this was initially a radio recording? ← This was originally issued on Dutch Riverside and also on French Riverside. With the same cover. The two Riverside operations were part of the Interdisc company. Both versions are pretty rare indeed! ← So Riverside had French and Dutch operations, or were there some guys that had a deal and were allowed to use the Riverside label record some of their artists?

Yes, but then my LP (it's from 1987, Landmark LLP-1307) says "first american release"... right on the front cover! From Keepnews' blurb on the back of the LP: "...remained in limbo for two decades, neglected and almost literally forgotten. What had happened was that in the mid-Sixties, following the shut-down of the Riverside operation, Cannonball gained ownership of about half his output for them. He turned these masters over to Capitol, for whom he was then recording. They did briefly reintroduce just a few selections, but then Adderley left that company and eventually, like more than one major label, they stopped issuing jazz. In effect, Capitol had no use for this material, no staff members still familiar with it - actually no compelling reason to remain aware of its existence." And then he goes on telling how he is the best and has so many compelling reasons not only to remain aware but to actually release them on his own imprint, Landmark. He brags about Cannon being his colleague, him having produced almost all Cannon dates, and hiom being co-founder of the label... he the best The hard facts, again quoted from the back of the sleeve: (italics and capitals just as on the sleeve)

That's what my mumblings above amount to, too. However, I'm far from sure, only having the reissued LP from the eighties (1989 I think).

I don't know. What I do know is that it was one of those recordings Cannonball took with him when he went to Capitol (thus the title of the [7CD] "series" on BN). The same version that I have the LP of also was out on CD (all 7 albums were reissued by Landmark, probably still somehow associated to Riverside/Fantasy, with some short note by Keepnews explaing the origin of these dates). I cannot understand why Blue Note waited so long before finishing the run with this fantastic album - I would have released this one way before the JWS, Bossa, Poll-Winner & Kelly Quartet albums!
-
Exactly. And this is how my Landmark LP looks:

Skipped this thread, since I won't buy these (don't want the cheap copycrap, won't pay the too high shipping costs of Amazon or CDUniverse), *but* that Cannonball is one of his greatest, in my opinion! Check out Brother Yusef tearing it up with his oboe on "Trouble in Mind" - WHOAH! Only him and the rhythm section, as funky as you can get with an oboe, I assume... that cut is, as the saying goes, da shit! (and believe me, that is mildly put!)

Wierd! When I went to my PMs first time after the re-launch of the site, the Sent Items folder said (0), but when I opened it, all was there as it should. You do realize you have to check every PM (at the bottom) if you want to have a copy in the sent items folder? Any way to have that as default?

Rooster's BFT#25 -- official "check-in" thread...

Did you get mine? Can't remember... I only wonder since #26 will come from Switzerland, too! I could add copies of Rooster's set, in case. -
Try some (or all) of these: And if you want something a bit more on the light and playful side, try this one: These are all from the days when there was a freshness to this kind of music, and when explorative minds were at work. Before it all freezed down and turned into a means to show chops and technique...

That one just cranked me up! ← It's not as bad here, but other than some of you guys I've never met anyone with an interest in jazz that's as broad as mine (I always end up being annoyed by a couple of friend's who just can't take some good old hardbop or some contemporary stuff by mainstream players and accept that this is valuable and good music, too). Then I also don't meet those friends on a daily basis, unlike you! Shortly put: I like this place quite some...
