    John Gilmore

Can't you still find one somewhere on the net? Otherwise... (get the drift) I don't know many things Gilmore did, as I have not yet really entered the Sun Ra universe. I like the BN album with Jordan, Gilmore's showing on that Hill date, and really love said LaRoca album (Corea notwithstanding...). He's got a fairly individual sound, judging from what I heard, and I rather like it. Is there much around of him without Ra? ubu

You had me excited, for a minute. That sounds just like the way I relax with Broetzmann's Machine Gun, Kevin Drumm's Sheer Hellish Miasma and Coltrane's Om, all playing at the same time. I'd add some Last Exit to the mix! And how can you even think about relaxing without mentioning Ascension (both takes simultaneous, of course) ubu
  3. When was it, and with whom? My opportunity was with a quartet with European (based) musicians, I remember Fritz Pauer from Vienna on piano, Jimmy Woode on bass and Tony Inzalaco on drums. My first conga teacher, Tom Nicholas, sat in, he's from Philadelphia but moved to Germany in the mid 1970's - he had worked with the G. C. Octet among others in the US. I always dug that man live more than on his records, where he didn't move me as much. Only two or three years ago it was. He played with Ahmad Jamal. Started with some trio stuff (half an hour) and then some five or six tunes with him added. The great Idris Muhammad was on drums. (But hell, I will maybe include a track from this in my BFT...) However, it's an evening I have very fond memories of! jazznojazz festival in Zurich, same night Jacky Terrasson played a terrific set with a great Leon Parker (on full drum-set, for a change), and in the breaks there was Larry Goldings with Peter Bernstein and a MIND-BLOWING Billy Stewart on drums. Sort of a "night of great drummers", it was, with some Eric Alexander to top it off... ubu

I dug up my two Nagl discs, both are on November: Max Nagl Quartet, Mélange à Trois, rec. 97 with Joanna Lewis (violin), Nagl, Joseph Novotny (p, harpsichord), Patrice Heral (perc, voc) Max Nagl Quintet, Café Electric, rec. 98, same personnel, add Achim Tang, bass. Pretty nice stuff. Re. Ramasuri: I heard a broadcast of that project, was very very interesting, I think I got to get the Hat disc. Does anybody know the other hatOLOGY from Nagl? "Big Four" or something. ubu

  9. By the way, jazzos (here) has some Merrill on sale. Go to their Bargain section to find "Music Makers" and "No Tears... No Goodbies" (both OWL) and the wonderful "Shade of A Difference" and "The Feeling Is Mutual" (Emarcy), for Euro 10.90 each. Totally off topic, by the way, sorry, but the last two of these CDs are becoming rare, I think. ubu

Oh, shit, that must have been some freudian slip - I meant Friedlander, of course, as we were talking about him. Friedman is a musician I do not really know. I have some sideman dates, from '60 till almost today, but - DON'T GIVE ME ANY RECOMMENDATIONS, hell, do give some if you can't let it... I should stop buying, too! ubu

This is a fantastic CD, one of the best from 2003 (I thought it was released in 2003) - I actually raved about it somewhere above (or was it during the e-mail phase of our communication?) "Maldoror" is much better than a bland soap fusion of "Quake" on Cryptogramophone, in case anybody uses "Quake" as a reference. Д.Д., have you heard "Abathon", the recent ECM double CD by Sylvie Courvoisier, Mark Feldman and Friedman? I have not had a chance to listen to it, but judging from some concert excerpts broadcast some months ago, it might be REALLY interesting! I think you raved about a Friedlander disc right at the beginning of my inclusion in your email exchanges - not sure it was "Maldoror", though. Have you read the book, by the way? It's on my list of books to read... ubu
  12. Bought Travesia today. No chance to listen yet, but thanks Mike for recommending them all! I certainly won't be disappointed! ubu

Max Nagl is a pretty interesting musician. I've got two of his CDs, but would have to listen again to make elaborate comments. Д.Д., you're right about the hat slogan... Listening to "Maldoror", Erik Friedlander solo (Brassland, rec. 2002). Very very interesting stuff! Anyone has it? ubu
  14. That's true, Lon! I did not want to jump a skeith, by the way, just clearly express my feelings about that wonderful date. ubu
  15. Found a Jimmy Witherspoon CD for a good price in some sale bin today which has some tracks with Grooves backing him: Witherspoon-voc; Teddy Edwards-ts; Paul Moer-p; Groove-org; Herman Mitchell-g; Jimmy Bond-b; Frank Butler-d. Rec. LA, 1963. In Blues Looser's Blues Please Send Me Someone To Love Life's Highway Cry The Blues Out Blues The CD is on WestWind (WW 2138) and has ten tracks of Spoon with the Mulligan quartet (Rowles, Vinnegar, Mel Lewis) and Ben Webster, which are pretty good, too. Recorded Hollywood, Ben Shapiro's Renaissance Club, 1959. Anyone knows this disc? ubu
  16. Yeah, Jim, you know, reading the comments on how you guys have developped since making the CD - it would be great to see/hear you live! Just be sure you tell us europeans early enough when you make it over the water... Hope you back gets better! ubu
  17. Here's another one in need... Maybe I can be added to the couw-tjobbe-... list? Afraid I'm not able to burn right now (but soon will, in case someone needs them, too, this side of the water). ubu ubu talks german, too, by the way, MERDRE!
  18. A GREAT FILM!! This is one of my ten or twenty favorite films! Love it, seen it several times in the movies and on tv (though I always prefer going to a theatre). ubu

That's a pretty cool one! You know, I'm maybe as far from being a patriot as one can get, BUT I got to admit that there are some good aspects to this country - Hat being one, for sure, Intakt another, ... ubu
  20. Thanks, Mike! I'm working on getting one... ubu

    Stan Getz

Lots of good ones have been mentioned already, I'll repeat some of my favorites, nevertheless: - The Complete Roost 3CD set: essential, not just for Getz, but PRETTY ESSENTIALL JAZZ, in my opinion! - the bossa dates: Getz/Gilberto, Jazz Samba, Jazz Samba Encore, Getz/Gilberto #2 - the West Coast dates - look if you can find the 3CD set that held them all. Othewise, the albums were reissued since on single CDs: The Steamer, West Coast Jazz, Award Winner, and some tracks on: ...) - & the Cool Sounds (Verve) - this has some great things on it. Tony Fruscella, Bob Brookmeyer... - Plays (Verve - a nice companion to the Roost set, more Jimmy Raney, and good one!) - Poetry, a beautiful duet album with Albert Daily (p) recently reissued by Blue Note - of the Concord and Barron stuff I know little yet, but Anniversary and Serenity (both on Gitanes/Emarcy/Verve/Universal) are very good. - in the Universal "Jazz in Paris" series, there has been a Getz album, too. Like that very much. It's called Getz in Paris or something. You should be able to find that for a good prize. It features the Getz quartet with Gary Burton, Steve Swallow and Roy Haynes. ubu

Got a broadcast from Denzler/Delbecq/Labarriere/Pfamatter! Great group! Hey guys, you realize at least some of these are swiss, dontcha!?! ubu
  23. Uh, I'm rather embarrassed I did not recognize this one! I LOVE that disc! Jim, you better get that CD fast! The drummer's called something like "Winnie the Poo", which is fitting, as the bass player's that guy making pee pee constantly on that much beloved date with Conrad Yeatis also aboard...) And Eric Alexander IS great! I have fond memories of the one time I saw him life! ubu B)
  24. Could not disagree more about the "other vocalists" part! The sides with Helen Merrill are some of the best vocal jazz I EVER heard! ubu
  25. Whew! Boogaloo sisters all over the house! I'm in the middle of "You Don't Want To Do That", and HELLYEAH! I like it! Great CD, guys! Gotta listen a couple of times, but I like it right from the beginning! "J.S. Goes To Washington" is a very cool tune! ubu
