  1. Agreed, would have been nice for Norwich to stay up. I like their stuff. In fairness, WBA don't play too badly. The guy Gera is a great player, I think. Tell you what though, Fulham aren't bad, but 6 - 0??? OK, so Norwich's away form is pretty dreadful, but 6 goals shipped against Fulham? I don't know what they were thinking. Hmmm...I sort of agree...but I think Arsenal aren't exactly clean. In fact, I think their foul play is particularly insidious, because it's all chased by angelic/outraged/indignant (depends on the precise situation ) pleas/remonstrations with the ref. And then there's Wenger, who just moans and moans and moans and moans (repeat ad infin.!) Scott, did you listen/watch the games? SO exciting. To think that at varying stages, each club was staying up. And to think also that there was a situation where Norwich, even beaten as badly as 6 - 0, could have stayed up! 'Funny Old Game...'

  3. I think that Fast Show sketch is the bane of any British jazz musician's life..! My initial reaction to your last couple of sentences was that that couldn't be the case, and wasn't my experience, but in fairness, I'm short on examples... I think there are maybe other attitudes in musicians over here I dislike. Especially some of the younger college players.
  4. Thanks for the info! I might pick up a couple of those other Mannes. I'd forgotten about the Mingus (shame on me!), which I have.
  5. By the way, I completely agree with this. Affectation on stage is appalling, and completely not what the music's about. I just interpreted the question in the thread more loosely, I think!
  6. Listening to, and greatly enjoying, 'More Swingin' Sounds' at the moment. I really like Charlie Mariano here - I don't really know anything else of his, I don't think.
  7. Trawled this thread up looking for something completely different through the search function, but Lonnie Smith has to be one of the coolest!

  10. AEC - People in Sorrow Ayler - Spiritual Unity Braxton - For Alto Joseph Jarman - As If It Were The Seasons Roscoe Mitchell - Sound [although I'm REALLY into 'This Dance is For Steve McCall' at the moment] Cecil Taylor - Nefertiti, The Beautiful One Has Come Elmo Hope - Is it 'Trio'? The one with Jimmy Bond and Frank Butler, in any case. Run close by 'Sounds From Riker's Island', however! Dolphy - The 5 Spot recordings. Vol. 2 if pushed. Rollins - At the Village Vanguard Mingus - Live at Antibes Rahsaan Roland Kirk - I Talk With the Spirits [with 'Rip, Rig and Panic' a VERY close second] Mobley - Workout Green - Feelin' the Spirit
  11. I've only heard Willie Pickens on the occasion almost a year ago where he depped for Hank Jones at Symphony Center. I have to say I REALLY enjoyed his playing.
  12. Jorge Heider Victor Borge Svjatoslav Richter
  13. His second encore in London - the first being Lonely Woman - was peppered with fragments of what sounded like 'When You Wish Upon a Star'!
  14. Bev, the same feeling was in the audience in London. A fantastic reception, and several ovations. The support from Andy Sheppard, however...very weak, as far as I was concerned.
  15. The London gig on the 2nd was awesome as well.
  16. Just fallen in love with The Queen's Suite. Easily done, but wow!
  17. Don't know it myself, I'm afraid!
  18. My suggestion's a Baby Face Willette Select. That would be cool.
  19. Had the 23 Standards on earlier, but it's been Birmingham (1985) for me most of today. Mark Dresser is a wonderful player.
  20. Two closer as of this morning.

  23. Thanks for that! Might possibly hold off for now - I did enjoy the 23 Standards, but I have so much of his original music still to hear... I wish they'd have come to the UK on the Standards tour, though!
