  1. Thanks, Scott. When I first started studying organ full-time I was very apprehensive of the pedals. I put off learning them for about 2 years until finally my mentor said, "Look, if you don't play pedals you might as well play piano." That really stuck with me. He taught me the "right" way to play. Yes, I'm using C2. I go back and forth but I mainly use C2. Just a personal preference. Yeah, those were terrible. Who's the guitarist? Joe Dukes was the quintessential organ drummer, right up there with the oft-maligned Donald Bailey. They are like ying and yang. Dukes is the agressive organ drummer, Bailey was the passive. The guy that invented the Nova Bass was from Kalamazoo, MI I believe. A lot of folks I've met are looking for him but nobody knows what happened to him. I heard that he got in trouble because of some patent issues with his design and now he won't touch the units, even for repair. I prefer the original Hammond bass myself. With the right amplification and pedal technique, it's all you need. In fact, I've had several people ask if I'm using some sort of mod on my bass on gigs and they are surprised when I say no. I have a customized direct box on the Hammond that I route to an EQ (to filter out everything but the bass) and then run that into a seperate speaker (sometimes a 15" cabinet, sometimes a sub). Just enough "oomph" to make a difference.
  2. Why anyone would buy jazz from iTunes is beyond me, unless they start carrying OOP material. Who wants mp3s as their final source? Eech.
  3. I didn't know that. Good luck and take care of yourself!
  4. I am a huge fan of Adult Swim! ATHF is my favorite but I like Sealab 2021 and Harvery Birdman as well. They are completely insane. I love all the musical references in ATHF. Futurama is pretty damn funny as well. Are they actually making new episodes of this or are they just re-runs from Fox? It would be a shame if they are not. My brother turned me onto Invader Zim. Has anyone here seen these cartoons? Totally wacky and funny as hell!
  5. Scott, have you heard the Gerald Wilson Mosaic boxset? They include all his records for Pacific Jazz and he did one or two records with Groove and the big band. This is a few years before Jimmy Smith did the Verve/big band thing. Groove is even kickin' bass pedals on some of the stuff WITH the big band. It's very cool!
  6. Yeah, that was a lot of fun. I wish we could've gone for another week or two. We were just starting to get tight! That storm is on the recordings but you can't really hear it... I should've put up audience mics.
  7. Well it's my tune. I wrote it... so I suppose I can do whatever I want with it, right?
  8. For those that may not be reading the Don Patterson thread, here is a cut from our tour with Arno Marsh in August. This is an original tune written for DP called "Patterson's People". It was recorded live at Gull Landing in Pentwater, MI. Our man Chuck Nessa was in the audience! This is a little taste of what might become a live CD with Arno. Patterson's People - remix!
  9. I think you're referring to the Live At The Left Bank disc that was put out on Dorn's last ill-fated label. While the sound quality is lacking, the quartet is kickin' some ass on that one! BTW, I just uploaded a newly mixed version of "Patterson's People" to the website. This one should sound a little better and has some "chatter" for Big Al to enjoy at the front! http://www.organissimo.org/pub/PattersonsPeople.mp3
  10. Uh-oh... I didn't realize it was kicking people out of position. I'll change it back.
  11. If it bothers anyone I'll change it back. It was meant as a joke.
  12. They are making new ones!!! With most of the original radio cast! WOW! http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/hitchhikers/?focuswin
  13. Mine does that, too. The poor B3's were not made to be hauled around from gig to gig and their little spindle legs start getting loose. The screws on the front right leg of mine are mostly stripped out. I need to do some serious maintenance on the ol' girl. I'd love to find a C3 to haul around and open up the back and sides. They are much more sturdy. Although people don't recognize them as well as the B3.
  14. No... it's just for show!
  15. Man.... Groove was a bad mofo. I wish I could've seen him live. My dad saw him at the old Tropicana here in Lansing back in the 70s when he had a week-long stint. My dad said he came and saw him every night and just couldn't get enough. He also said the Hammond he played looked like beavers had gnawed on it. Thanks for posting that.
  16. Thanks, Mark!
  17. Wow, thanks for the compliment! Not to toot my own horn, but we do have a CD available on our homepage (www.organissimo.org). The CD is all originals and the folks around here seem to like it! We're currently working on our sophomore record as well as determining if we have enough material to release a live disc from the recordings that "Patterson's People" came from.
  18. And the sky is falling... Give me a break. If someone really wants to know who played bass on Coleman Hawkins Meets Ben Webster, all they have to do is do a quick google search.
  19. You guys are slow.
  20. Thanks, CJ. I just got a new interface for my computer which will allow me to dump these tracks in digitally from my portable recording device so I can actually mix this stuff for real. J Lee, it seems to work fine for me. Try right clicking on the link and choosing "Save Target As". This will let you download the tune to your harddrive and you can listen to it from there.
  21. J Lee reminded me of this thread. "Why Not?" off the album of the same name has become one of my favorite tunes of late. It was written by Houston Person but the only place I've seen it is on Don Patterson's record on MUSE. I love playing that tune. Here's a little ditty I wrote for Don called "Patterson's People". This is from our tour last August with Randy's father, Arno Marsh. This is very poorly mixed... it's basically just a reference so we can choose what tracks we may want to release from over 8 hours of recordings. But you can get the idea. http://www.organissimo.org/pub/GL_15_2.mp3 We'll probably do this tune on our next record. It's fun to solo on. Long live Don Patterson!
  22. How about this: Q: How many Organissimo posters does it take to change a light bulb? A: None. The administrator does it and then everyone complains that he didn't do it the right way. -_-
