  1. An Alcoa Christmas? Foiled again, I guess. Well, tacky as that is, it does save the real thing, but gimme something real.
  2. Who cares what these airheads do, or with whom? It is amazing how preoccupied the media is with people who are of no significance to anyone but, perhaps, next of kin. Again. Conrad, why do you post crap like this?
  3. One of the audio engineers at Columbia called Teo and had him fooled with a Miles imitation. BTW, Bob Weinstock did a pretty good Miles imitation, too.
  4. Thanks, Lonson, for posting that wonderful (for me) nostalgia trip. Teo was a breath of fresh air in my days at Columbia and I had nothing but admiration for him--that admiration is now heightened by his frankness in this documentary. BTW, his secretary was Dave Chertok's wife, and his office adjoined John Hammond's--but the two men were as different as day and night.
  5. Thanks for sharing the photos. Lucie is remarkable, I used to watch his public access show here in NY. Probably the last living musician to have recorded w. Jelly Roll Morton.
  6. I'm halfway through volume 2. My great great grandfather bought these books on a trip to Liverpool, in 1853.
  7. Yes, I remember him saying that, but--at the time--I thought it was just so much mumbo gumbo.
  8. Not a PhotoShop picture. It's from yesterday's 60 Minutes show.
  9. What a shock that is! I did not know Joel very well, but he took my place at WHAT (Philly) when I left to join Riverside in NY--we shared stories. I just saw him in an old Sam Cooke documentary the other night. He will be remembered as his work continues to bring people enjoyment, but 65 is far too young.
  10. Right, that could easily translate into Clark Terry says nothing.
  11. Of course he was. She was the pianist in his Cool Five recording group.
  12. Back in my old Canterbury school days, I was called upon to play cricket a couple of times--it was no fun, even when we won.
  13. That fur sink (it's a foot bath, BTW) is alright with me.
  14. I wonder how well (sound quality) this works. It could be a handy way to convert from vinyl. Has anyone here tried this? They also have a much less expensive turntable that plugs into a USB port on your computer.
  15. I think they may be Down Beat awards.
  16. Then there is source music, where it emanates from an obvious source rather thin air. I find that to be effective in the same way that the use of natural language is effective (i.e. German soldiers, Jesuses, et al do not speak mid-western American). The 1964 Abbey Lincoln/Ivan Dixon film, "Nothing But a Man," which is among my favorite black movies, used source music, Motown recordings from radios, etc. I agree with those who feel that film music is most effective when it seamlessly blends with the visual.
  17. As far as I am concerned the money I have sent in (and will in the future submit) is Jim's to use as he sees fit. My interest is to see the Organissimo board stay alive, period!
  18. 7/4 is a handle for JC?
  19. A timely thank you to you, Rachel.
  20. Is the birthday belated or are we talking about the birthday wishes?
  21. Yes, I believe the story is--in good measure--uninformed assumption.
  22. For a lot of young people "latin" is a language spoken somewhere in Latin America, that's really scarying. Didn't the Bush fool in the White House apologetically tell a South-of-the-border audience that he doesn't speak Latin?
  23. HAPPY BIRTHDAY JIM! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yj6cbM-h8xg
