  1. How much does it cost to maintain this board? I we can cover the cost--and I'm sure we can--it should not be difficult to find volunteers to do the administrative chores.
  2. DEEP as moderator? I don't think so, moderation is not his thing!
  3. I think that's unnecessary--is there anyone among us who doesn't want the Big O to live??????
  4. That would still require some policing, so what would be gained?
  5. This is very bad news, As has been pointedout, many of us have developed a cyberfriendship here at the Big "O". It occurred to me that there ought to be one place where we can at any time obtain an e-mail address for a fellow member. This may be a lousy idea, but I have set up an e-mail address to which we can send our e-mail. That way, we will have one place to go and we need only go there once. So, if you want fellow members to find you after the O is gone (and I still hope it doesn't), you can send your O handle and e-mail address to: BigOalumni@mac.com I'll generate a list out of that and give it only to y'all. Well, it's an idea. The address is up and responses have been received.
  6. I once used software to remove the surface noise--it did too good a job, so I sent the tape to Phil Schaap, who instinctively reinstated the noise and added bonus tick tracks.
  7. It was not a very good year, but I have good, close friends and I can look ahead with positive thoughts. Lost a very dear, long-time friend to drugs. I'm still around, in good health, able to pay my bills.
  8. I still like White Christmas, much of my "like" being nostalgia-based, but there is only one Christmas song performance I never tire of and would not ever wash into oblivion: Mahalia Jackson' Apollo recording of Silent Night. As far as I'm concerned, they can destroy all of Mahalia's Columbia recordings of that song.
  9. I know I'd get some disagreement with this, but I'd like to see Monte over here. Our political forum needs a serious transfusion. You are correct about receiving disagreement, at least from me--yes, we could benefit from a more balanced political forum, but, unless he has changed (which I doubt), Monte is incapable of reasoning when it comes to politics. In my previous post, my short wish list of emigres included two reasoned members of the opposition. Monte is an arrogant, inflexible, GOP-at-any-cost prick who never posted anything thought-provoking in the pit. Granted, we already have such posters here, but they are not as mean-spirited as Monte.
  10. If they are still in Lois' pit, I'd like to see Brian Olewnick, Darryl Thomas and Jesus Marion Joseph pop over here--and stay.
  11. I understand full well why anybody would wish to leave Lois' snake pit, but Mr. Lil, could you not try so hard to be funny over here?
  12. Manhattan had a little snow in the early morning hours ...
  13. I understand Washington, D.C. is expecting another sustained blizzard of lies.
  14. A discography that is rife with errors is worthless if one is doing serious research. Yes, Mike Fitzgerald is, indeed, meticulous--that's why the professional jazz community respects his work.
  15. This one's for you, Conrad. I took it ten or so days ago....
  16. A bit chilly in NYC today, and the trees are losing their Autumn beauty...just took these 10 mins ago:
  17. No, I was producing reissues that were pressed on vinyl. The material originally appeared on 78 rpm discs, so I would order test pressings made from the original 78 rpm metal parts--these one-sided pressings were made on vinyl.
  18. Now, getting back to vinyl, don't tell me that U.S. vinyl production isn't made in China....it is, isn't it? I mean, lead, and all that kind of stuff? Seriously, 35 years ago, when I was ordering vinyl test pressings of 78 rpm discs from Columbia's Pitman plant, the quality was abominable and consistency so lacking that I had to order 3 copies of each side in the hope that one of them was usable. It wasn't the vinyl mix they used as much as a young work force's lack of respect/interest in a medium long since superseded. I wonder if the same might not apply to modern day production of vinyl LPs?
  19. Ah, but ever so much duller!
  20. Very nice, Onslow (sorry, Uncle Skid), and thanks for the complement. And thanks arpaxa for the reduction To use this opportunity, here's another one.
  21. Turning it 90° in either direction ought to do it, MG, or, perhaps, 2 Pollocks are better than one?
  22. It really can be so ...
  23. I have never regarded turducken as anything more than a gastronomic gimmick. It's a waste of duck, IMO.
  24. arpaxa, can you reduce your photos? they are way too big and they slow down the thread when first accessed. The forum's software eventually performs a reduction, but.... Thanks Here are 3 more window shots that I use:
