  1. It would have been nice if this thread had originated with Conrad--nice, but enough of my fantasizing. Well, a rainy day in Georgia could turn people around, these days!
  2. Why would anyone make a movie about a one-cylinder player?
  3. I wasn't referring to Brokaw , but there are many like that--they love the sound of their own vice.
  4. We all trip over words from time to time. I do HS football and baseball games as the stadium PA announcer. Sometimes the names are just plain unpronounceable. It happens. I think you should re-read Chris' post. It has nothing to do with mispronouncing someone's name. Thank you Aggie87. Besides, John's slip-ups were frequent.
  5. I have discussed Bolden with a handful of people who actually heard him play. Consensus: a very uneventful player who was limited to basic blues and known for playing louder than anybody else. I guess Wynton can relate to being creatively limited, and loud. I wonder what he thought he heard Buddy Bolden say... Who will play Duke Ellington in this production? Will Dizzy's Coca Cola club be selling the "Bolden Gumbo Cook Book"?
  6. He had some difficulty with words. I remember time when he was delivering the TV news (at WCAU, where we worked) and he mentioned an East European politician. "It was he, as you may recall, who last year defecated to the West."
  7. I don't follow sports, but I generally find the sportscasters to be loud-mouthed and obnoxious. That said, I have worked with a few sports people in my time (Kyle Rote, Jack Whitaker and Frank Gifford come to mind) and they were all nice guys. I think Bob Costas is a good interviewer and I used to enjoy his non-sports interview show. I also worked with John Facenda, who was the Cronkite of Philly (without he brain) and, I understand, a sports voice (football?). He was also a nice guy, but somewhat full of himself and clearly in his position due solely to a good radio voice.
  8. Better than a bonus track, Dan!
  9. Something that popped up this morning and warmed this atheist's heart ...
  10. Not dead, but much of it falls on deaf ears, it seems.
  11. Was he, perchance, trying to come out?
  12. That's what I thought, at first. I had high hopes that she had finally been put away. Oh, well.
  13. A couple of weeks ago, having lunch with Bob Wilber and Pug.
  14. J.A.W.: "I've PMed quite a few critical notes to some of the moderators on the Hoffman forum and I've never had problems." Why did you PM your critique? Could it be because you knew they'd ban you if you aired their dirty laundry? Isn't it aversion to criticism that makes the SH monitors repeatedly delete what appears to be the truth from the Wikipedia Hoffman listing?
  15. How so? I have crossed many an unpaved road (in Iceland) and avoided the mud puddles. I did not enjoy reaching the other side any less because of that, but I did hope that the road would eventually be paved.
  16. Because an inkling of critique will most likely get you banned and the board is good except for that factor.
  17. I think snobbery veils reason in many cases.
  18. Yes, but you might want to read the discussion (hit the tab at the top).
  19. Thank you, six string. I just finished reading the discussion re Hoffman on the Wikipedia site--very interesting. I had noticed how eager beaver some of the moderators are at the SH forum, and how they clearly are over protective. There are some absolutely ludicrous taboos over there. The dispute gives one a fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of Wikipedia. It also told me things I had not previously heard about SH--in fact, like T the K, I had never heard of Hoffman until I came across his forum, and I spent years in this business.
  20. MAY THIS BE YOUR HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY! Until the next one!
  21. HAPPY BIRTHDAY GARussell!!! Hope you remembered to pick up some Tums™
  22. He is a moderator (sans moderation) and he may well do reviews, but he is a major jerk who has scared away from that site several people who have something of substance to contribute. His major problem--apart from being dictatorial--is that he seems obsessed by a need to exercise power, which--I suppose--is why he volunteers for this monitoring job. It's too bad, because Mike has worked hard to create a site that stands out among jazz sites and should have a forum that invites rather than discourages dialogue. jklman's own narrow mind does not allow this. I can just imagine what his reviews are like!
