  1. A well deserved defeat--this was a pointless lawsuit.
  2. Here are a couple of photos that accompany the above NYT article: Dizzy Gillespie, far left, in concert at Town Hall in 1945 with Charlie Parker, far right. Dizzy Gillespie
  3. My thought are with you--in fact, they have ben with you since you first shared with us your mom's health problems. It is clear from your reminiscences that she was indeed a very special person, and, as you said in your very touching post, she can suffer no more, so now it is time for you and your dad to go through the healing process. Clearly, your mom left you "boys" with many good memories that will ease that process. Thank you for sharing something so personal--I think we can all learn from your words.
  4. Too much work, IMO--I can't see going through all that unless the act of going through all that is what floats your boat.
  5. Ditto and ditto here in New York City--unless, perhaps, the guy was white.
  6. So it wasn't Martha Glaser? I need to stop jumping to conclusions! Glad you're safe, Chuck.
  7. It is a Photoshop window that pops up when one clicks on the "Image size' option.
  8. It is important that your resolution does not exceed 72

  10. Or jump over the fence at its lowest point and simply say: Cologne.
  11. And here's the AP story that was given national play...
  12. Here's the piece that went with the photo (above), and it's Andy again...
  13. The young lady who called the Daily News (and every news office she could think of) worked for Down Beat. The magazine had a very small office, headed by Dan Morgenstern, and (Jane was her name) was the secretary and only other NY employee. The "movement" had nothing to do with the magazine, but Jane was a tireless jazz groupie with avant garde leanings.
  14. I caught it--a pleasant surprise. I hope the interviewer learns how to pronounce Köln.
  15. You can also buy paper that is cut specifically for labels and inserts. http://www.provantage.com/buy-7vbtm27t-dvd...63-shopping.htm And for printable blanks: http://search.store.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/nsea...1Zs6a9KpnYTN44-
  16. Thanks for that program, SP. I don't recall seeing it before--is it from a concert? I did not record the band doing Bill Bailey. Here's what I did record: Ken Colyer's Jazz Men Colyer, cornet; Chris Barber, trombone; Monty Sunshine, clarinet; Jim Bray, bass; Ron Bowden, drums. - Lorry's Guldaldersal, 7-9-13 Klub, Copenhagen. April 11, 1953. Tiger Rag (113) This was a live recording made when we introduced the band to Storyville Club's members. Issuing it was an afterthought. I had it on a separate reel and had forgotten about it until I came across it--by that time, I had moved to Iceland. Monty Sunshine Trio Monty Sunshine, clarinet; Lonnie Donegan, banjo; Chris Barber, bass; - Home of Grosserer Henriksen, Copenhagen (Gentofte, I think) - April 12, 1953. St. Phillips St. Breakdown (114) Wildcat Blues (115) Ken Colyer's Jazz Men Colyer, cornet and vocal*; Chris Barber, trombone; Monty Sunshine, clarinet; Lonnie Donegan, banjo. Jim Bray, tuba and bass; Ron Bowden, drums. - Gentofte Hotel, Copenhagen. April 19, 1953. I Can't Escape (116a) Isle of Capri (116) Shine (117) Sheik of Araby (118) A Closer Walk with Thee (119) Wabash Blues (120) Bucket Got a Hole in It* (121) If I Ever Cease To Love (122) Bluebells Goodbye (123) We Sure Do Need Him Now (124) Gentofte Blues (125) Colyer does not play on Gentofte Blues/ We did this in the hotel's ballroom. The band played from a small elevated bandstand and I placed the microphone quite some distance in front of them. So that Ken would be able to reach the height of the microphone, we placed several chairs from the bandstand to it. Ken very carefully negotiated those chairs to tell us about his damaged bucket.
  18. Eh? Did overdubbing exist then? ← It was possible (Sidney Bechet's one-man band on Victor), but never with satisfactory results--I'm afraid this guy (the blogger) is fantasizing.
  19. Here's a largely clueless piece on Miles Davis. The anonymous writer brings up some valid points, but he is so biased as to practically invalidating them. I'd be interested in hearing comments. http://www.mr-agreeable.net/stubbs/default.asp?nc=5950&id=71
  20. Right now, that would be about $145, right? Sounds like a bargain.
  21. They do what the director says? I think not. First of all, they put up the money, secondly, the director (if there is one) or camera operator(s) follow what the couple does. I am sure that Bobby Brown gets some control for his (or Whitney's) money. Also, to compare this to "Survivor" makes no sense. Yes, many aspects of "Survivor" are staged, but it's an entirely different kind of show. If the Browns need money that bad, they have less embarrassing means of earning it. I seriously doubt that they are making a spectacle of themselves strictly for the money. As I recall, Brown had the idea that this would be good for their image--it is, of course, having exactly the opposite effect.
  22. If you like to see people make fools of themselves, you will really love this show. If you like Houston and Brown, you will probably hate it.
  23. I caught it the other night--pathetic is the word, I think. Some people have no shame.
  24. I just read a disturbing exchange on Steve Hoffman's board. As one whose fairly large LaserFisc collection succumbed to laser rot, I am disturbed by to learn that CDs may be suffering the same fate. Here's a link to the discussion. I'd be curious to hear from anyone here who has had (or heard of) this experience with CDs.
  25. Noj, I just came across this thread, went through the whole thing and all I can say is: keep being shameless!
