ballads is unique bailey due to the way he incoporates the themes. essential maybe for that reason. and maybe a good starting point because it's sort of bailey "lite". you're right, the songs were played all in one sitting with the tracking added later. check out pieces for guitar on tzadik. made up of early (the earliest?) recordings from the mid 60s, it's pretty melodic stuff for bailey.

i'm with chaney, at about $24 for a single disc it's unlikely i'll buy any of these america/mrc reissues. my music budget is pretty liberal, i just have a hard time justifying that price point when there is so much other music to be had. of course, i'll add a few of them (the aec and braxton releases) to christmas and birthday "wish" lists every year until they go oop. maybe i'll get lucky and someone will pull the trigger for me.

I'll be sure to report back then. I'm far from a Bailey maven but I do enjoy his solo work. I also ordered the new DVD release today.

I'm glad to be here and willing comment on any and all speculation. Yes, the Ra titles are the Italian reissues. The All Music reviews for the Fondation Maeght discs include the comment "Enthusiasts should note that both volumes of Nuits de la Fondation Maeght were issued on CD from an excellent quality tape (read: non-vinyl) source on Comet Records in 2003" so I'm hopeful about the sound. Four Principles On Ireland And Other Pieces (1974) will be my introduction to Cardew. $9 seemed a good price to test the waters (much less than the hat releases anyway). Has anyone heard the Bailey?

  12. not mentioned yet are the wonderful olivier messiaen recordings by hakon austbo (piano). and i second flurin's recommendation of the 4 volumes of cage's works for prepared piano by boris berman.
  13. the reckless records on milwaukee a few blocks north of dusty groove is a nice shop for used jazz. as is the other reckless across town at belmont and broadway. there used to be a number used shops in the clark/belmont/broadway area. i'm not sure how many are still around. others will have to chime in with details. the jazz record mart is an essential stop.

  16. glad to see this thread evolve in the few days i've been away. thanks for the suggestions everyone.
  17. I'll be in St. Louis over the Thanksgiving holiday. In between eating and watching football I'd like to get out of the house a bit. Can anyone suggest some worthwhile used CD shops? I'll be staying in Ballwin but don't might driving around the city. Actually, any suggestions as to what I might do with my free time would be appreciated. thanks in advance, gsb
  18. I stumbled across a used copy of Chuck's AEC box at the Reckless Records on Broadway in Chicago. I didn't investigate too closely, but the box looked to be in very good condition. Price, If I recall correctly, was $39.99. The box was tucked away in a glass display case in the back of the store above the jazz lps. It deserves a better home. Reckless does mail order. Contact info can be found at "www.reckless.com".
  19. in that price range (and let me be clear in saying that all my comments apply only to machines in the $1,000-1,200 price range.) i'd start with dell. i suspect dell will deliver the best combination of performance, battery life and monitor quality at that price. plus it'll be wireless network ready. the only potential drawback is the dell will be pretty bulky. but i'm guessing that since you mentioned not wanting to use headphones that portability isn't your first concern. check gateway too. their offering is priced inexpensively, offers decent performance (though not in dell's league) and is very portable. definitely no bells and whistles. for instance, i don't think they come wireless ready. but very solid for the price. toshiba generally offers excellent performance. i'm not very familiar with what i guess would be the "satellite" series at that price point. i'd look into it if i were shopping around. i don't think hp/compaq and ibm can compete at that price point. both start inexpensively enough, but by the time you add the necessary options/upgrades i'm guessing you'll find yourself in the $1,500 range.
  20. through work, over the last 8 or so years, i've used various gateway, toshiba, dell and ibm notebooks. (i'm currently using a dell latitude 600 and a ibm thinkpad.) none of them have worthwhile speaker systems. i advise spending $50-$100 on a separate speaker/sub system (creative labs, altec lansing, jbl, etc.). they make a world of difference.
  21. I'll be in Minneapolis this week on business. Never been before. My hotel is near the airport and I'll be commuting to Target headquarters in Bloomington. I should have a few free hours in advance of my return flight. How should I spend this time? When in doubt I usually opt for browsing the used cd shops. Recommendations appreciated. gsb
  22. the thread (i don't recall who started it) that contained swede's "where to start before swing" entry (circa '99 blue note bbs) is also a great source of information. several others contributed to that thread as well. i think i can dig it up if there's interest. or, perhaps someone else would like to do the honors. did swede ever post his "white big band's" and "small group swing" entries?
  23. all discs have been sold but one: hill's eternal spirit is still available.
