excellent news about the shows on the 13th & 14th... i'll be in chicago and in attendance on the 14th. is anyone else planning on making it?
  2. FWIW... I've tried twice in the past to order Mosaics that had just gone OOP from Collector's Choice. They weren't able to come through for me in either case. I guess they don't actually keep an inventory at least not of all of them (maybe just the ones licensed for retail sale?)... I dunno. No attempt to shoot the messenger here... I just thought I'd share my experience.
  3. Podcasting has become an infatuation of late. There are so many nowadays and frankly most of them are crap... Can anyone recommend any favorites? Something jazz and/or improv focused would be ideal but my listening habits (musically speaking) are pretty broad.
  4. "Up" one last time... Only 3 days left, the drive ends June 30th. If you've traded/downloaded any of Mr. Braxton's OOP albums/CDs or live bootlegs this is your opportunity to give something back to him. It's also a chance to give a birthday present. Thanks again to those of you who have already made a donation. Anthony Braxton 60th Birthday Collection
  5. "Up" for renewed attention and to thank those who have generously contributed. The drive wraps up in just 2 weeks.

    Funny Rat

From what I know, there three The Thing CDs - self titled, "She Knows..." with Joe McPhee and "Garage" (recently released on Smalltown Supersound). Looking through the Smalltown Supersound website I found also a 7" LP by The Thing. It was Garage I saw; completely missed that release. I've got to spend more time following this thread. Any reviews? And thanks for the label link.

i noticed a seemingly new cd by gustafsson's "the thing" the other day, does anyone know if this is new material or a re-issue of their first album?
  8. Funny, Quartet Out is exactly the kind of band our friends expect us to have. My fiancée has assured them that won't be the case. ;-)
  9. "How much would be considered a fair donation per disc?" Donation size is entirely up to you and completely independent of how many, if any, of the OOP albums listed above you might like to trade for. edited for grammar
  10. Just sent you a PM, Jim.
  11. Please take a look at the e-mail below from Franz Fuchs (moderator of the Yahoo Braxton group) and give it some consideration. For those of you who are interested in getting a hold of some of Mr. Braxton's OOP Arista and Ring recordings (never released on CD) I am happy to help you. (Note: Mr. Braxton has approved this action.) Below is the list of albums I have available on CD-R. I'd prefer to distribute them via trades but if you are generous enough to make a donation to Mr. Braxton I may just send them to you free of charge (better than a cobalt blue travel mug from NPR, right?) ;-) Creative Music Orchestra (Ring 01024/5/6) 1972 - 2 Discs Quartet Live at Moers Festival (Ring 01010-11) 1974 - 2 Discs New York, Fall 1974 (Arista AL 4032) 1974 - 1 Disc Five Pieces 1975 (Arista AL 4064) 1975 - 1 Disc The Montreux/Berlin Concerts (Arista AL 5002) 1975 - 2 Discs Duets 1976 (Arista AL 4101) 1976 - 1 Disc Creative Orchestra Music (Arista AL 4080) 1976 - 1 Disc For Trio (Arista AL 4181) 1978 - 1 Disc For Four Orchestras (Arista A3L 8900) 1978 - 3 Discs Alto Saxophone Improvisations (Arista A2L 8602) 1978 - 2 Discs For Two Pianos (Arista AL 9559) 1980 - 1 Disc Hamburg 1981 (TV broadcast; performance of Comp. 98) - 1 DVD Cheers, Greg -----Original Message----- From: Anthony_BRAXTON@yahoogroups.com [mailto:Anthony_BRAXTON@yahoogroups.com]On Behalf Of Franz Fuchs Sent: Thursday, May 05, 2005 2:54 PM To: Anthony_BRAXTON@yahoogroups.com; Subject: [braxton] Anthony Braxton 60th Birthday Collection On June 4th multi-instrumentalist/composer/writer/teacher Anthony Braxton will be turning 60. 2005 is his 39th year in Creative Musics and 38 years have passed since his recording debut on (Muhal) Richard Abrams' "Levels And Degrees of Light". One outcome of Braxton's never-wavering dedication over these four decades is a qualitively astounding discography of nearly 250 albums. Braxton's birthday provides a great opportunity for us to show our appreciation - not only of his music but for him as an artist who held out through rough times (like the first half of the 80s or the period after his expensive opera project "Trillium R", 1996). Mr. Braxton has been quite generous about his fans' sharing of OOP records (for example the scandalously unavailable Arista albums!) and even encourages it. So if you partook in trading/downloading this material or live bootlegs or if you simply want to make a birthday present you can do this now through the "Anthony Braxton 60th Birthday Collection". The procedure: Click on Anthony Braxton 60th Anniversary Donation Page This link leads to the following PayPal page paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_xclick&business=gregory%2es%2eblake%40fri tolay%2ecom&no_shipping=0&no_note=1&tax=0&currency_code=USD&lc=US and are provided for better usability. The "AB60thBC" utilizes a PayPal business account. Therefore donors don't need to be PayPal members and can send their contributions also with their credit cards. Only 1.5% PP transaction fees will be deducted from each donation - the rest will be taken over by us. *Mr. Braxton will get 98.5% of the total sum of the contributions.* Once the campaign has ended (June 30th), the money will be sent to Braxton via check. Proof that he got it will be provided with scans of the transaction stub and/or a message from Mr. Braxton. Braxton himself doesn't know about this initiative yet. Please forward this mail (or only the link to the PP account page) to any person that might be interested in contributing to the campaign. Thanks in advance for any donation! Regards Greg Blake - manager of the "AB 60th birthday" PP account Franz Fuchs - moderator of the Braxton mailing list Once again, please click on the following link to make a donation. 12. I'm engaged. It's been a little over a month and I do enjoy typing it. I'm engaged! I'm engaged! The wedding is August 27th in Colorado Springs. We've hired a string quartet (members of the Denver Symphony Orchestra) to play the ceremony and the cocktail portion of the reception and a classical guitarist to play during dinner and cake cutting. Still on our want list is a band to play for a couple hours at the end of the evening to give the people something to dance to. My fiancée's preference is a steady dose of 80's Cure, New Order and Depeche Mode (supplemented with disco). And while watching my grandparents dance to Boys Don't Cry and Blue Monday at my sister's wedding did put a smile on my face I'm not sure we need to do it again. Ultimately, we agreed to look for a band to play a healthy mix of Stax/Volt soul, Motown and 60's Atlantic/Rhino R&B (Ray Charles, Otis Redding, etc.). We live in Dallas and don't have any musical connections in Colorado. And our Colorado-based wedding planner has yet to hit the mark (I think one of bands she referred is called "Mystic Rain"). Does anyone here have any suggestions? Is anyone interested in the gig?
  13. I seem to recall reading somewhere that Mike Watt put Haden up to this. That the original is one of his favorite records. And that this project was done very tongue-in-cheek (I haven't heard it yet). I saw the Decemberists recently in Dallas. Great show. Haden had been with the band about 2 weeks at that point. She contributed backing vocals and violin on most all songs. Her show highlights included a couple lengthy violin solos and an A cappella cover of a kate bush tune. The Kate Bush cover was really well done but made me realize how talented Bush really is, you could see Haden struggle a bit with some parts. Bush (to me) always seemed to sing everything so easily. Jim, is this your website? Petra Haden Shrine
  14. A few of my favorites... Anderson - Dark Day + Live In Verona, Milwaukee Tapes Vol. 1 Brötzmann - FMP130, Fuck DeBore, More Nipples, Balls, ...hell, all the Brötzmann's are great! McPhee - Nation Time von Schlippenbach - Pakastani Pomade Mount Everest Trio - Waves Of Albert Ayler ... this one came out of left field for me, a great surprise. Here's the list of upcoming UMS release for 2005... The Contemporary Jazz Quintet: Actions 1966-'67 reissue (ums250cd) Sirone (featuring Sirone/Charles/Lawrence): Sirone Live (ums253cd) Last Exit (featuring Brötzmann/Jackson/Laswell/Sharrock): Köln reissue (ums252cd) Brötzmann/Bennink: Schwarzwaldfahrt (FMP Archive Reissue- ums254cd) Dieter Scherf Trio: Inside-Outside Reflections (ums255cd) Joe McPhee: Pieces of Light reissue (ums256cd) Brötzmann/Sharrock: title tba (ums257cd) edited for typos
  15. The two Reckless Records shops are probably my favorites for used discs (both for jazz and non-jazz). I was in the JRM a couple of weeks ago (my first visit post move) and was pretty disappointed in the state of their used section. Hopefully, that'll improve as they get settled.
  16. i'm bit-torrent challenged. are there any kind souls out there willing to send the flood my way? i have much to offer in return via trade. please pm me.

i'll second john b's crypto recs. they're all very good. of course, i'm a big nels cline fan so my opinion is not entirely objective. that said, dresser's aquifer might be the best of all of them. i have a url/password crypto sent me to a micro-site with access 2-3 discs worth of downloads (sampler-type stuff for the label). i'll see if i can dig it up if anyone's interested.

  19. Thanks to a friend with a fantastic vinyl collection, I've been immersing myself in releases by Ogun Records. What a label! The premise being a collective of South African jazz musicians meet the British/European avant-garde in London during the 70s. Louis Moholo Johnny Dyani Evan Parker John Stevens Elton Dean Mongezi Feza Lol Coxhill Keith Tippett Dudu Pukwana ...to name just a few of the contributors. Among my favorites so far are Evan Parker/John Stevens The Longest Night Vol. 1 & 2, The Blue Notes Blue Notes for Mongezi and Blues Notes for Johnny, John Stevens Chemistry and Spirit's Rejoice by the Louis Moholo Octet which, frankly, is stunningly good. Anyone else have any love for this label? Anyone else have an Ogun recommendation or an anecdote about what looks to be a very interesting history? Anyone else want to see these titles released on CD?
  20. I'll reiterate the praise for Song For Biko and add a plug for David Murray's 3-D Family (due to be re-issued by Hat in the near future I think I just read somewhere). Can anyone comment on the Ayler release Flowers For Johnny? I'm not familiar with the work of either Anders Gahnold or Gilbert Matthews.
  21. I've had this article filed away for a couple years now. It's dated but the idea is solid. Unfortunately, the Antique Sound Labs Wave amplifier and pre-amp have been discontinued. Maybe a Google search or a note to the manufacturer will turn up a source. Hi-fi nirvana under $1,000? Here's another off-the-cuff thought... I wonder what this (or similar) $99 audio interface super gadget used as an hi-fi amplifier would sound like with the Paradigm speakers, cable, etc. from the first article? Class-T integrated circuit technology might be an interesting budget audio solution. A USB audio interface with a secret life
  22. I was in the same position about 4 years ago, looking for a near-audiophile 2-channel system on a $2K budget. My listening room is rather small and for aesthetic reasons (i.e. spouse) a compact setup was important. I concluded an integrated amp with a CD player and floor-standing speakers (good stands for bookshelf speakers are expensive) was the route that offered the best value and fit my parameters. I auditioned components from Arcam, Rotel, NAD, Rega, Naim and YBA among others (and you should as well) but pounced on a Linn Classik Integrated Amp / CD / tuner combo (it comes with cables and interconnects) when I found a demo model for about $1K. For speakers, I went with Totem Arros (with 2 pair of beaks) for about $850. I added a Monster power conditioner for about $80 more. I adore this combo and would buy it again in a heartbeat. The Classik lists for about $1,700 new. Used/demos turn up for about $1K. Linn aside, I really like the Rega and Arcam components. Speakers are such a subjective thing so I won’t make a specific recommendation. I’d consider (list price in parenthesis) Totem Arros ($1,200), Rega R5 ($1195), Rega R3 ($795), Spendor S5e ($?). Also look into Vandersteen, Silverline, Naim, Paradigm and maybe Mission. Audioreview.com is a good place to do some research. I’ve found their “Reviews” section particularly useful. Audiogon.com is a good place to buy used/demo hi-fi from reputable sellers. Have fun.

better place your order quickly. I placed an order early yesterday afternoon for about 10 okka and leo titles. i received a reply back that all but one were sold out.

i just received the box yesterday. it's more or less my introduction to the music... at least the many different facets. to this point i've only heard a couple of fennesz discs. since we've moved on to confessions of unheard guitarists, i admit (to my knowledge) i've never heard keith rowe.
