This is interesting!!!! Family says doctors misdiagnosed Rocco Baldelli's condition

Good point. I have some theories about the problems with the writers. As I understand it, a writer must be a beat writer for 10 consecutive years to have a vote. Realistically, that means some of the current voters may have never seen Ted Simmons play as a Cardinal (not everybody had access to out of area broadcasts in the 70s and 80s). Given that, how may of these voters are influenced by what a terrible GM Simmons was? It's true, how few teams anyone got to seen via TV back in the day??? I think the Cards only broadcast locally 40 games a year, so I only saw someone like Bench if a Reds game was televised, or during the game of the week. Jim Rice even less often, Though they must have shown the Red Sox a fair bit during GOTW(how times have changed ) since I can very easily picture his swing...and of course during the playoffs you got to see a few teams a bit more. Don't think after 1, 2 years of Simmons being a GM has much to do with it, he had a heart attack, and had to resign because of that in 1993.

You rang? Simba's Retrosheet page .... Yep! Thanks Quincy!!! Verrry interesting. It was interesting to look at Bench's and Simmons' fielding numbers. Some amazingly bad WP numbers early in their careers(I think 69 in one year for Bench!!!) And Carter looked like a bad catcher at the end, cuz he was old! He was very good in his youth. Piazza was never a good catcher, but he sure got worse with age...won't really hurt him come HOF time will it though???? And whither Bob Boone??? He was thought of as a great defensive catcher,(There are some not hit great catching catchers in the Hall) played into his 40's had the all time record for games caught...never hear any HOF talk for him, do you???

I think the way Simmons' production fell off so quickly hurt him (like Rice). Even though he was still knocking in runs after a point, his inability to run and his relegation to being a DH made his decreasing batting average stand out more. He definitely would fall into that Garvey range, excepting that when he was a major offensive force, he was stuck on that mediocre St. Louis team. One other guy I think needs to go in is Jack Morris. His high ERA works against him, but anybody who saw him pitch knows the real score. I agree his numbers fell fast, but he was a catcher, that happens! Look at Johnny Bench's stats(And no way am I saying he was Bench's equal) His last good year was at the age of 31, but you don't hear anyone hold that against him. And looking at the games he played, looks like he was way overworked as well, though I know he played some first(and perhaps 3rd?) as well. But, if you are considered the 2nd best catcher during the era of the (arguably)best catcher, doesn't seem like that should hold you back. And it wasn't til the end of Simmons career you started to hear comments about him not being so good defensively. I recall hearing TV folk during the all star game say he(Simmons) should have been the starter, or was the best overall catcher in the game, as Bench was playing less and less. But, as long as Bench was playing, he'd be the starter. Playing in old Busch Stadium, before the walls were moved in, really hurt Simmons power numbers(I'd love to see the splits home and away, can anyone find them?) 7 years he hit .300 or better(Bench never did in a full season) Oh well, Peter Gammons and Keith Obermann think he's a HOF'er, that should be enought for me! And yes, I'm biased.... Oh, one more thing, check out the fielding stats in the link via Bench's name! Amazing numbers throwing out runners! in 1974, 37 runners stole a base, 35 were caught! When he was 32, 84 bases were stolen, 34 caught. Doing my best Columbo....Oh, and another thing....yeah, Jack Morris should be in the HOF. I hate him, broke the braves backs twice in the WS, was all about the money it seemed, but pitched best when it mattered. Funny how little you hear about post season performances when people talk about him or Garvey for the hall.

What's funny is I have always thought she was attractive, but is about as unphotogenic as you can get, which is strange for an actress. Moving pictures, fine, magazine covers??? Just about every one I have ever seen of her look like one's that should have been rejected.

Those legs ain't photoshopped! I saw a better quality clip of this show awhile back but you get the idea from this Letterman show.... you can tell he's a leg man! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwYG7U8iMHo...=1&index=21

I think that's an excellent move! Clearly Leyland has a problem with younger players...not that Jackson is old, but he's more or less proven. Matt Joyce I thought was about their top prospect, at least ML ready. You guys are loaded with starting pitching, so what can it hurt???
-
...if Santo gets in, then make room for Dave Parker, Al Oliver, Andre Dawson, Bert Blyleven, Steve Garvey, et.al., they're all on the same HOF level. Dawson and Blyleven belong (as does Dale Murphy) and a legitimate argument could also be made for Garvey. Santo belongs. I agree as well. I never liked Garvey much, but he was truly a clutch hitter, a guy you hated to see up with the game on the line. And you all know my broken record. How about a certian player who had 2472 hits??? 1389 RBIs??? 7 seasons hitting .300 or better? A guy that got more hits than Ozzie Smith, Jim Rice , Jeff Kent, Red Schoendienst, Dwight Evans, Mickey Mantle, Pie Traynor, Ryne Sandberg, Enos Slaughter, and many more. More RBI's than Johnny Bench, Orlando Cepeda, Brooks Robinson, Johnny Mize, Mike Piazza, Hank Greenberg and many more. 4th on the all time list of RBI's for a switch hitter. Oh yeah, and he was a catcher as well. 7 straight years he played in 150 or more games(one year he played in 161!!!) And he wasn't even on the list of players eligiable for the HOF this year! Ted Simmons must have pissed off a lot of folks during his playing days....

By Nichola Groom LONG BEACH, California (Reuters) - From pricey luxury sedans to popular hybrid cars, automobiles made overseas are stacking up at ports and parking lots around the United States as supplies far outstrip demand amid the nation's worst auto market in more than 25 years. At the Long Beach port near Los Angeles, Toyota Motor Corp vehicles including Prius hybrids, FJ Cruiser sport utility vehicles and Lexus IS 250 luxury sedans are being stored on a vast construction site that will one day be a new container terminal. http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSTRE4B61NA20081207

Remember all the "experts" that said we would never see gas prices south of $4.00 again??? Remember all the times in previous price spikes where they said it would go up $4.00, and it didn't??? Experts don't know shit most of the time. But they still get to call themselves experts. I saw $1.50 yesterday, it brought a tear to me eye.

Any suggestions on what to do about a problem with a DVD
BERIGAN replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Well, as a noted entitled crybaby, if raising hell would get it done in just 2 weeks, I'd be all for that! Of course, I have been messing around with it for awhile, and if I hold the tray up slighty while pushing the tray in(no, I didn't do that before I had the problem, always hit the button) it reads it most of the time. I can live with that....so forget everything I said before! -

am i supposed to separate berigan, the political provocateur, from berigan, the guy who imo is acting like an entitled cry baby? Nice job of letting it go! Clearly, you can't look at ANYTHING without it being political, can you??? Huh??? Oh, you mean when I called Obama a Muslim, born outside the U.S, whose books were written by William Ayer??? Oh wait, I never said those things! Perhaps it was using quotes of Obama saying things like the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties??? Was it when I said joe the plumber's real name is actually samuel?? Gosh, confused again, that was you who didn't quite understand that was his middle name. Oh well, that stuffs all moot, Obama won fair and square, and will be all of our president(unlike how some on the left felt about Bush) Perhaps you mean my outrageous comment earlier in the year that I thought the 2008 Tampa Bay Rays were going to finish in 3rd place, when everyone knew they were going to the World series! Again with the politics!!! Yeah, I'm entitled...entitled to an extended warranty that wasn't useless, or next to useless. Doesn't make sense to pay for a warranty if I can't record movies, or transfer tapes for 6 weeks. I don't have the patience of Job, and it looks like I should have saved the $80 on the two units to have it repaired quickly, locally. I already explained, but clearly you didn't understand, that the other recorder was in a room that is frequently a room I can't be in,( I am a night owl, he isn't) and don't see the need to deprive him of a player. I could, but it doesn't matter two shits if I have two or not. I have purchased the 2 Combo units, a tv, cd players, black media, etc. from them, but no more. A company like HH Gregg, which is clearly in bad shape from the complete lack of business(Attacked by a whole staff when I walked in to ask the question) would do well to either have a repair shop on site, or have local contracts with shops....you know the shop I will now have to go to, and will get the recorder back in a week.... I took a trumpet in for repairs, got it back in a week. Took a lawn mower in to Sears (Still under factory warranty at the time) got it back in less than 10 days. face it, there's a lot worse things in life than having to do without a 2nd dvd recorder for a few weeks. I mentioned it because because you said the comment above, after the Bush with the crying baby photo. Just because one has problems in their lives, doesn't mean they aren't "entitled" to asking for suggestions on how to best go about not waiting til next year to get something fixed under warranty. That's all, not a bit of politics in my original post. Again, excellent , clearly you have dropped the subject, well, with another bash of ol' heartless Berigan, who shows a lot less respect and understanding to other members of this board than you did here. I'd ask you to prove it, but you'd have to pour thru 7000 + posts of mine, and I really would hate to see you waste so much of your valuable time to find a fight Johnny or Chris A and I had back in 2004..... Yeah, I sometimes can be pretty poor at letting things go myself! -
Point me to a tread if this has already been mentioned. I like these pape thin plastic cases because I am starting to run out of room for all the Discs I have now, and the trim hard plastic cases still take up room after awhile. The paper ones are ok, but they block just enough of a disc that if I write near the edge of the disc, the words drop off. Plus I can put in a sheet of paper with titles on it and read all the titles through the plastic....Anyway, I was getting them cheap at Big lots, then after they didn't have them any more, I grabbed at Target. Now they were no longer carrying them so I checked online, Check out the comments on amazon as to disc damage!!! http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B0001...nDateDescending

Any suggestions on what to do about a problem with a DVD
BERIGAN replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Are talking 4-6 weeks for some component that you ordered online and had to mail back??? 4-6 weeks is a long time, for a 30 minute repair(Most likely) in my book. If I have one or two players doesn't matter, I would be without a dvd player in my bedroom..... I have a friend staying with me who has ALS, and he is often asleep or in "his" room with the door closed, so I can't record in there when I want to. I could take the recorder out of there, but then he couldn't play a movie if he wanted to. The store LIED to me, they just wanted the quick 40 bucks, the salesman wanted to get his cut, and made it sound like I wouldn't have any issues if I had a problem. And you don't know me at all, I don't raise hell to get my way.... you're right, i don't know you personally. but from your many posts, i believe that you are someone who is prone to make outrageous claims, someone who argues viewpoints that have little or no basis in fact, and someone who is loathe to take personal responsibility for his mistakes. oh yeah, and from this post i gather you're something of a... face it, there's a lot worse things in life than having to do without a 2nd dvd recorder for a few weeks. Yes, I know there are things worst than being without a 2nd dvd recorder "for a few few weeks" dipshit. Like seeing a good friend who is slowly dying from ALS get the shit beat out of him my a wonderful homeless guy(just wasn't hugged enough I guess) in the middle of the day a few months ago. His worthless aged Mom had just kicked him out of his house(long story) he was forced into living in a hotel and he was going down to see his lawyer since the inept federal government can't even get around to expediting his case, when the beating occured. When my Dad picked him up after he was released from the hospital, there was no way he could take care of himself. So, he has stayed with us since. We have found him passed out on the floor(His ear was damaged from the beating, and had screwed up his balance) had to clean up his sheets since the diaper his has to wear doesn't always hold in everything. And he gets weaker every day....worried he will fall and really hurt BELIEVE me, I know there are worse things than a DVD player having problems. I paid money, Insurance....so I wouldn't have to have to pay to have it fixed at a repair shop....papsrus is likely right, a lesson learned on extended warranties. And you could learn a lesson from a fellow liberal like Pap.... may notice every word he types is not first filtered through a political viewpoint. -
A threadon the Turner classic movie forum on the subject....(Still looking for a thread there that showed a site comparing An American in Paris Blu Ray vs. Standard, and it was quite striking) http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa...81&tstart=0

Not sure, but the movie companies' profit margins are enhanced. I am in the camp of who cares, at least right now....it just means companies can re-release the same old titles again and again...but, from what I am reading, it really makes a big difference with older films B&W and otherwise... http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/bar...index.html#high

About 2 Christmases ago, I got a JVC DVD recorder combo, since I have tons of old Beta tapes to copy(We've had a beta since 1980) and even some of the older VHS tapes were in dire need of transfer. Saw this unit at HH Gregg , recorded and played all DVD formats. My older Philips DVD recorder(Which has since given up the ghost) only would only record DVD +R, and DVD +RW discs. And thought, might as well get an extended warranty, since plain ol' DVD players were dying on me every year or so, and with to recorder/players inside more potential for trouble. And I have hundreds of tapes to transfer, eventually. Normally, I avoid these(extended warranties) like the plague, everything I read about them says they are more or less a waste of money(except perhaps on big ticket items) but, for $40 I would have 3 years of no worries. I seem to recall the salesman say, if it ever breaks down just bring it on in! Even grabbed a 2nd one for my birthday in 06,(And another warranty) since I liked it so much. Well, the one in my bedroom has 2 issues. It makes a fair bit of noise, I assume it's the fan on the back of it, and now the drawer will not close most of the time you hit the button, sometimes I even have to unplug the sucker to shut it off!!! So, I went into their store, since I knew I had the receipt....somewheres...to see if I really needed it, or if they could look me up in the system. They could, and did...Now, I didn't really want to be without a recorder for too long, but I figured it might be a week. So, when I asked her how long it would take(No repairs are done in store) she said... 4 to 6 weeks!!! WTF???? Bring it in today, and in mid January, you will be right back to recording??? You have to be kidding me!!! I did forget to ask if there's any chance of a "loaner" but that sounds like something that should be damn near illegal. I know I got no warranty paperwork, it was just bring it in with your receipt if you have any problems with the unit. So, long story short, what should I do??? It may just be a minor repair that any old shop could do, but it pisses me off after giving them 80 bucks that I should have to spend money to get it fixed. Should I raise a stink at the store level??? Say the unit is broken, and that I want a new one, that I'm not going to do without a dvd player/recorder for a month and a half??? Somehow, I don't think that's going to work. I see a Customer Relations phone # on their site....I can call them later on...I just feel like I am missing something, So, enlighten me someone!

Woman loses $400,000 in Nigerian e-mail scam
BERIGAN posted a topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Now we know why they still try these scams....if her husband killed her, it would be justifiable homicide. Woman loses $400,000 in Nigerian e-mail scam Associated Press Tuesday, November 18, 2008 SWEET HOME, Ore. — An Oregon woman who is out $400,000 after falling for a well-known Internet scam says she wasn’t a sucker or an easy mark. Janella Spears of Sweet Home says she simply became curious when she received an e-mail promising her $20.5 million if she would only help out a long-lost relative identified as J.B. Spears with a little money up front. Spears told KATU-TV about the scammers’ ability to identify her relative by name was persuasive. “That’s what got me to believe it,” She said. “So, why wouldn’t you send over $100?” Spears, who is a nursing administrator and CPR teacher, said she mortgaged the house and took a lien out on the family car, and ran through her husband’s retirement account. “The retirement he was dreaming of — cruising and going around and seeing America — is pretty much gone for him right now,” she said. She estimates it will take two years to clear the debt that accumulated in the more than two years she spent sending money to con artists. Her family and bank officials told her it was all a scam, she said, and begged her to stop, but she persisted because she became obsessed with getting paid. The scheme is often called the “Nigerian scam” and it’s familiar to many people with e-mail accounts. It still exists and it still works. Spears first sent $100 through an untraceable wire service as directed by the scammers. Then, more multimillion dollar promises followed so long as she sent more money. The scammers sent Spears official-looking documents and certificates from the Bank of Nigeria and the United Nations. President Bush and FBI Director Robert Mueller were also involved, the e-mails said, and needed her help. They sent official-looking documents and certificates from the Bank of Nigeria and even from the United Nations, saying her payment was “guaranteed.” But it wasn’t and now Spears is paying the price for her costly lesson. “The hope is [other people] are not going to fall as hard as I fell,” Spears said. http://www.ajc.com/news/content/news/stori...scam.html?imw=Y -
Well, the story is the Peavy to braves trade is officially off, according to the Braves GM Frank Wren. I think the Padres have tried too hard to get one more piece from the Braves. No way were the Braves going to trade them Tommy Hanson, (the oldest guy from Hanson ) who somehow has gone from a 22nd round pick , to the best arm the braves have developed in probably 15 + years...What is strange is no other team besides the cubs have made much of an offer for him. He is one of the best pitchers in baseball right now...Like Santana, teams still won't give up the farm for a #1, which is a bit funny. I think Peavy's arm is just waiting to blow up, so not too sorry to see the deal fall apart....watch it all come together tomorrow.
