  1. Ahem... The BNBB is back up again!
  2. Regarding the two different types of notation: Keep in mind that this refers to the English language specifically, where descriptive notation was prevalent until the 70s/80s, but now has been superseded by algebraic notation. In other languages algebraic notation was used before that too. If you for example read a German chess book from the 19th century it will have algebraic notation.
  3. I really thought it was a flattering picture! Different strokes maybe. Anyway, here are a few more. Maybe some will be more in accordance with what you had in mind.
  4. And here’s another celebrity who reportedly enjoys playing chess between shoots.
  5. Vitali Klitschko visited the Dortmund tournament and is here seen flanked by Bologan’s wife Margarita to the left and Leko’s wife Sofia to the right.
  6. One of the strongest tournaments this year finished yesterday. Kasparov didn’t play but number 2, 3, and 4 in the world (Vladimir Kramnik, Viswanathan Anand and Peter Leko respectively) all participated. But the Dortmund tournament saw one of this biggest upsets ever in top-level chess when the Moldavian grandmaster Viorel Bologan, only rated 42 in the world, won it, a full point ahead of Kramnik and Anand. At 31 Bologan is no wunderkind, but he certainly won a lot of new fans with his superb performance in this tournament. 16-year old Teimour Radjabov, already rated No 45 in the world, managed an excellent 50% score, and was responsible for one of the most sensational games in a long time when he beat Anand as Black in round 2. Earlier this year Radjabov created an even bigger stir when he beat Kasparov as Black as well. Watch out for this kid. In a few years he may be World Champion material. The beginning of the sensational game where 16-year old Teimour Radjabov as Black beat World No 3 Viswanathan Anand.
  7. Exactly. It seems that many posters have misunderstood the AMG ratings. No matter how good you think that John Patton is, an average Patton has got to have 3 stars, according to the AMG system. No matter how bad you think Britney Spears is, an average Britney Spears album has got to have 3 stars. Something in Patton's catalogue must receive less than 3 stars. It can't all be 3 and above, if 3 is going to represent the average.
  8. How do they decide whether someone is black or white? Where do they draw the line?
  9. This could easily be material in the public domain. Classics already has 12 Garner CDs going up to 1951.
  10. First of all I think that Fresh Sound, which puts out previously unavailable recordings, and Definitive/Jazz Factory which rips previous CD releases, are two different operations. There was a thread about this on the old BNBB, but unfortunately it isn’t accessible now. Ocium is a fairly new label. I don’t know if it has any connections with Fresh Sound or Definitive, but it seems to specialize in recordings from the late 40s and early 50s, and from what I can see much of it has not been available on CD before. I think their cover art is firstrate also. There was a thread about this label on the AAJ board, with a listing of titles and content: Ocium gets some verve Ocium has a nicely designed homepage also: Ocium homepage Click on ”OCIUM Jazz Releases” then ”Main Catalogue”. From there you can click on the album covers and read about the various releases, including the Auld. It has a Discovery session from 1949 plus sessions for Coral from the early 50s. I haven’t bought any of their releases myself yet, but there are some I definitely want to get.
  11. Hubert Laws on Morcheeba's version of Summertime.
  12. I thought this might be the Blues for Tomorrow that showed up as a bonus track on lots of Riverside LPs.. features Ray Copeland, GiGi Gryce, Hawk, Trane etc.. if so it will sound a bit out of place on a Herbie Mann bass clarinet album. Fantasy put the wrong bonus track on the Mann CD. There is a Herbie Mann track on the Blues For Tomorrow album, called A Sad Thing, but instead someone accidentally added the title tune by an unrelated group. Very sloppy quality control. Don't know if they have issued corrected copies afterwards.
  13. Herschel Evans died in 1939.
  14. The seller has now changed the title from Monkey Juice to Monkey Jungle.
  15. This guy also has a CD by the saxophonist "Albert Taylor"!
  16. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...8&category=1056
  17. Swing Factory belongs to the infamous Definitive/Jazz Factory family. http://www.disconforme.com/index.asp
  18. Many thanks, John! AMG has track 4 and 5 reversed. I like to know the original album configurations. While we're at it, does anyone know the LP track order on Jimmy Smith's Special Guests? AMG has this listing: 1. 'S Wonderful 2. The Blue Room 3. Day In - Day Out 4. Smith Walk 5. Lonesome Road but according to discographies the track Organic Greeneries was also part of this album.
  19. Funk You! has been reissued on this twofer, where it is coupled with the Sonny Stitt album Soul Electricity! They were recorded on two consecutive days.
  20. I suggest adding Benny Bailey to the list. He was born in 1925, and recorded in 1947 with Teddy Edwards.
