Happy Birthday, You Son of a.......
BeBop replied to catesta's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Hey Happy Birthday! Live It Up! -
I'm not sure Rahsaan would have dug the sound of my acounstic coupler modem trying to connect...!
-
Needless to say, I don't spend much time in the threads with pretty pictures - album covers and such. Am I the last in the Dark Ages?

How is all this financial craziness affecting you...
BeBop replied to Free For All's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I haven't been around/posted for about six weeks now, so I've missed out on people's reactions to market gyrations and financial institution news "as they happened". (So much for context.) But I'll weigh in on the question now: no effect on me. -
Vic, Looks like you've got (nearly?) everything I have...and then some. Nice to see you here. (And for me, it's nice to be back, after six weeks or so away.)
-
Hey, I missed it. Hope it was a great one.

<SHUDDER> That's gotta be the worst one yet! This one's worse: "Your death will be particularly slow, cruel and agonizing. You will listen to trombone playing for the rest of your miserable life."
-
'zactly. And I like Kessler too. And ya can't go wrong with Art Taylor. And Reece.
-
...drown to death. Wow, that sounds worse than just drowning. Maybe I can use it in my next story: "...husband returned home unexpectedly and killed him to death."

After you rudely push your way through a crowded line at the zoo, a large, angry man picks you up and throws you over a guardrail into the bear pit. Being only minutes before feeding time, you are quickly devoured by the hungry beasts. Damn, is this a 'fair' death for a vegan?

New link for the WBGO program: http://dizzyreece.blogspot.com/2005/02/jaz...ogram-wbgo.html (The old link didn't work for me.)

I just got an e-mail from Cadence telling me that this has been reissued on CD. 1974: FROM IN TO OUT / DIZZY REECE QUINTET, Feat. John Gilmore, Tenor Sax, Art Taylor, Drums, Zigfield Kessler, piano, Patrice Caratini, contre bass. Rec. Live Concert in Paris, France. It was an old Futura LP that garnered top-dollar when it turned up. (Ghost of Miles was looking for it, once upon a time.) Reece speaks highly of the date in an AllAboutJazz interview. Has this been out on CD before? Am I justified in having a Chewy-level excitement over this?!?!?!?

I'd met Hines and got to know him a bit shortly before his passing. I was working on a set of interviews that never came to fruition... Timing. But a hell of a repository of JAZZ knowledge. Bird, Satch, Diz, Wardell, Kermit (Scott), Vi, Jaki, Bud Freeman, Hawk...

The market for discographies is often pretty limited - even for a popular (within the jazz world) label like Blue Note. I can remember paying $30 and more, 30 years ago, for discographies of not-well-known musicians. And the current Lord Discography - granted, it's huge...though I won't opine on accuracy and completeness - is something like $150 per year! Thanks for the clarification on the years of coverage. I'd glossed over the last sentence. It's all releases through 1999, but reissues through 2004. (One advantage to the Lord work is that it does get updated.) And thanks for the discussion. I didn't intend to sound argumentative. But I was pretty excited. And now, I'm even more-so, with your clarification on five years of reissues. As an aside, I am - like you, I'm guessing - delighted to find as much discographical information on the web as has been posted. Lots of labors of love there. Personally, I recognize that there may not be enough "love" to compile 60 or 65 years of Blue Note information to lead someone to offer this for free (copyright issues aside). So, sometimes I pay, and sometimes I'm thankful for the freebie.
-
Actually, the 'bummer' here is that the CD-ROM only runs up to 1999. So the last decade of reissues...

For me, this seemed like such a raging 'deal', that I didn't hesitate a moment before pulling the trigger. In my mind, the effort involved and the value provided easily justify the cost. And, as much of a book lover as I am, I had to recognize the value of searchability.
-
Yes, Proper offends my sensibilities. I'm a lucky boy, I suppose. I have enough recordings that I'm not desparate to buy anything in particular. And I have enough money to buy what I feel I REALLY want...even if it costs four times what Proper asks. I do have one Proper set - purchased before I understood their reissue program, and retained because I'm a completist for the artist featured.
-
Thanks for all the information. Lots of gray out there. For me, jazzshrink hit it: I'm going to think about what I buy, how it stacks up against copyright laws in its locale, the the locale where it's licensed... Of course, I'm going to be buying the clearly legit issue, when I can, and will pass on anything that offends my sensibilities.

the past few days, I've had access to a high-speed 'net connection. And haven't had access to my MP3 player. So I've been listening to Accuradio. This 'station' came up a while ago in the contxt of the Chicago Jezz fest (http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=45889&hl=accujazz). But there are lots of channels, many good. http://www.accuradio.com/channellist/

Hey, Grooveyard lovers. There's a record shopping poll going on at sfgate (the Chronicle). Post a nice review for Rick. http://baylist.sfgate.com/lifestyle/shopping/records-and-cds

I find scattered comments 'round here on this question, but thought I'd solicit a more cohesive discussion. Since the BN/Roost box came out, lots of this material has appeared in RVGs. I don't care all that much about getting 'every scrap'; I'd rather get the best presentation and sound quality. (This is actually for a friend/pianist's birthday.) The Verve box doesn't seem all that cheap anywhere, though the BN/Roost box is. Go figure.

BeBop, you moron, that's three questions.
-
One other question: is there a gray area? how big? and what makes it gray?

I’m not looking to re-open the Andorra/copyright/royalty debate here. I don’t personally feel comfortable buying recordings from labels that, shall we say, ‘stretch’ the bounds of traditional music retailing ethics. So, I’ve been trying to put together a “Definitive” list. Most of this is just based on a visual inspection of the product. Someone issuing the “Complete Blue Note Recordings of…” (other than Mosaic or one of the new high-quality LP producers) looks suspect to me. I do want to make informed choices, so I’m requesting your input – especially you industry-insiders – to help me correct this list. A lot of the current offerings are designed to look legit, and may be sold through traditional channels, like Tower or Amazon. Some of the material is damn tempting. The Doubtful List: Quadromania Delta (UK) Shout Gambit Lone Hill Definitive Flapper ASV Membran Giants of Jazz Prism Prestige (not THAT Prestige, I think this one claims to be from the UK) JSP Jazz Factory Musical Memories Am I unfairly maligning anyone here? Who am I missing? Nessa? Big-O? ----------------------------------------------- The Really-Don’t-Know List: Hanssler Tim (Germany) Drive Archive 1201 (I know they ended up with something from the former Black Lion) Music Masters
