Because he is the ultimate media whore...and the parade of celebrity girlfriends apparently didn't get him enough time in the spotlight. No, I don't much care for Armstrong...aside from what he has done for cancer victims and survivors.

New radio stations carrying Night Lights
BeBop replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
Good news and great news! I spent (wasted) part of my youth in Fresno, and still go back from time to time. KFSR is really a decent radio station. And I've got a client in Spokane that's sending me more and more business. I usually listen to "the other" jazz station in Spokane (Eastern Washington University) since it's pretty much full-time and has student broadcasters. But KPBX has some nice programming too. I'll be listening when I'm in town. -
I saw him for the first time in the mid-70s, and for the last time last year. A sincere and dapper man and a fine drummer. Thanks, Louie.

Heading back for five more days. Expect to be working 98.7 percent of the time. But also hope to bust out for one show. Unfortunately, it won't be Vin Freeman at Andy's, perhaps the best-looking possible show I saw here: http://www.chicagojazz.com/chicago-jazz-calendar.php Don't know anything about Astral Project (Green Mill) Eric Alexander is moderately interesting (Jazz Showcase) David Boykins' Expanse (Velvet Lounge)? I'm a little fearful of too many vocals. Any thoughts welcome.

Happy Birthday Michael Weiss!

Happy Birthday and Congratulations! (I considered mine a helluva week, and all I did was get out of bed each day.) -
I've been trying to stifle this thought, but can't. What does this sale say about Mosaic and about the economy? Typically, when things hit "Running Low" and "Last Chance", the hold-out buyers jump in, getting while the getting is good. Or rather "possible". And yet here they're offering a discount. Is one or more of these well short of the 10,000 (or whatever) limit, but running out of time on the license? (Obviously, I don't know the particulars of any license Mosaic may have; and, frankly, I don't know much about the mechanics of such things generally). Or are things that tough. (Not just here at the O'Board!)

Agree. This is probably my favorite Teddy. And he had nice memories of it when I spoke with hime shortly before his passing. With the exception of Jimmy Woods and Larance Marable, the sidemen are not well-known: Nathaniel Meeks, Lester Robertson, Modesto Brisenio, Danny Horton, Roger Alderson. They all sound fine here, but mainly it's a supporting role.

Thanks for the inspiration. Ben and Sweets playing now.

This 'struck a chord' with me. From my perspective, too much fetish-ization of Blue Note's past. Then again, by many measures, the present pales in comparison. Grammy Salute to Jazz' at Club Nokia The pre-awards salute included a tip of the hat to Blue Note Records, but a nagging sense that the label's 1960s heyday may not ever be equaled lends a rueful undertone to the showcase. By Chris Barton February 5, 2009 At this year's "Grammy Salute to Jazz," there was a lot of talk about the future. Inside the crisp, modern Club Nokia at the L.A. Live complex downtown Tuesday night, performers and presenters such as Herbie Hancock, Natalie Cole and Recording Academy President Neil Portnow all gestured at the fresh faces of the high-school-aged Grammy Jazz Ensembles program filling the bandstand and assured an audience of elegantly dressed fans that jazz's future is indeed in good hands. And though one of the still-anonymous prodigies backing luminaries such as Joe Lovano, Cassandra Wilson and Hancock might rise to carry jazz into its next era of greatness, the unquestioned star of this night was the past. http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/la-et...0,3744951.story

I can't recall seeing much discussion of "pirate" radio stations here. In part, I suppose that's because there aren't all that many jazz-focused stations. I just landed at the Oakland airport and tuned in to KRKD (103.3 FM). I'm not sure how far the station reaches - certainly no further than San Francisco - so it's probably known only to Bay Area folk. Classic Jazz Saxophone show is on at the moment. Nice. And it sure beats that place down the Peninsula...that, on top of other shortcomings, has a pledge drive on now. Bay City Blues used to do jazz in Michigan. But their webstream (based on the last bookmark I've got) is .rdl format that my computer won't handle. For whatever reason - legal, economic, logistical - the UK seems to have more pirate stations. (Is Dread Broadcasting Corporation still around? Swinging Radio England?) A few other places I've got noted, not jazz-focused, but good: Free Radio Berkeley 104.1 Humboldt (CA) Radio Free Alliance 99.9 Recommendations? Stories?
