  1. 40? Heck, I don't even remember 40. Have a great one.
  2. Congratulations! (Hey, is there an echo in here?)
  3. Damn. I barely undrstood the question. What a knowledgeable and resourceful bunch ya got here.
  4. The NBCs? Or the Lincoln Hotel Ballroom? Is there a decent collection of these? Or will I have to continue to live with the scatterings across such stalt labels as Ajaz, Ajax, Jazz Anthology...
  5. Enjoy a happy birthday!
  6. Why? Lester Young's 1936-1940 recordings that are collected on the Mosaic set outclass his 1950s Verve dates, at least to my ears. I agree. There was no better Pres than 1936-40, in my opinion. I'd consider it among the five most-essential collections of jazz, ever, along with, Bird's Dial material, Louis Armstrong Hot Five/Seven, Miles' Classic Quintet, and Webster/Blanton Ellington groups. ...okay, don't hold me to that specific list for more than five minutes. But this Pres will ALWAYS be in the top five. If you've already got of most of the material - aside from some of the 'new discoveries' - you're adequately covered. But you MUST have SOME of this!
  7. Anyone know anything about these? http://www.dustygroove.com/item.php?id=mk44jc944b An amazing guide to some of the hippest jazz ever released -- a wealth of great albums from the 50s and 60s -- not just from the US, but from England, Italy, Germany, and many other global locales! As with other volumes in this series, the discography focuses on rare bits that have a strong current appeal -- the kind of older jazz albums that have inspired current players and producers -- and which are readily changing hands for big dollars in the collectors market. Most of the text here is in Japanese, but the book features color covers of hundreds of albums -- plus track listings, players, and dates. Like other Japanese discographies, the book's a great guide to get you digging even deeper -- and it's filled with loads of titles we'd never seen before at all! http://www.dustygroove.com/item.php?id=qvy...%3Bformat%3Dall An essential guide to the hippest in jazz from the 60s, 70s, and 80s -- a wonderful book that specializes in underground spiritual jazz recordings! The volume is similar to other Japanese discographies we've carried -- with images of record covers, session dates, titles, and player information -- plus additional text in Japanese -- and the whole thing's a wonderful guide to lost soul jazz treasures from some of our favorite years in jazz -- including a wealth of indie and small label pressings! The book is divided up into different sections -- Part 1 featuring "25 Masters", with individual passages on Gary Bartz, Carlos Garnett, Billy Harper, Weldon Irvine, Don Cherry, and many others; Part 2 features "Fabulous Labels", including Tribe, Nimbus, Black Jazz, and Strata East; and Part 3 features "Extra Classics" -- more albums that are really lasting classics from the post-Coltrane generation! Book is softcover, 160 pages, with most images in color!
  8. ...and that MIND! (Both Bird and Bud) I wish I could get into their heads. How can all this be going on? Were they insane (by some measure?); or maybe just on another plane. Certainly not the same kind of sane/plane I'm on. Not just a speed thing; CREATIVITY! I'm awed.
  9. Bud is god. Co-god, with Bird. I didn't come to this realization right away.
  10. I LIKE them all, and LOVE all but Brubeck and Mulligan. I wonder if anyone would have picked Bird or Duke, if they'd been on the list.
  11. If anyone sees a reasonably priced copy of this around (CD or LP), let me know. It's one of a very few on my "want" list.
  12. Joe/Al! Hope you have a GREAT one.
  13. Happy Birthday, FREEEEEEEEEE For All!l
  14. If was about hoarding CDs/LPs, she wouldn't be very happy about it...and I wouldn't blame her. But since, for me, it's about music, all's cool.
  15. Fats Waller Melvin Rhyne (with Wes Montgomery or Eddie Harris)
  16. If I win lunch with Blue Note management, I'm sending Chewy in my place.
  17. I'm still trying to come up with a 'wise man and three virgins' joke,
  18. I think one NY closing is old, old news. Today was the first I'd heard of the San Francisco closing (by the end of April, it was reported). Maybe it's well-known locally, but I don't get to SF but three or four times a year. (Today, I'm just passing through the airport.) http://www.kcbs.com/Virgin-Megastore-to-An...Closure/3918932
  19. Didja like the Q about "Pick the Best Jazz Recording of All Time?" I wrote in the Bolden cylinders. Perhaps Mr. Cuscuna will reissue them. RVGed.
  20. Happy birthday, Trane Fanatic!
  21. Personally, I don't think so. ...and no one likes an Ornate alto player.
  22. I still get those coupons, though I've yet to use one. That'd require (1) being near a decent Borders, (2) wanting something thay had, (3) determing that the price was reasonable, and (4) having enought money. As I say, so far, ain't happened. I still repost coupons here from time to time, though past postings of book coupons, even good ones like 40%, don't generate much enthusiasm. I'm kinda suprised that their computers weren't smart enough to match the product type and coupon. Perhaps all the programmers have been laid off.
  23. Happy happy!
  24. Hey, our hosts - three nice guys - have won a couple of awards. Would someone care to join me in congratulating them? Or is hail in Atlanta really more important? (Sorry, don't mean to be a jerk.)
