  1. Anyone seen a reasonably priced copy of one or both of these recently?
  2. PM coming on: Lester Young, The Complete Lester Young Studio Sessions on Verve (8 discs) $65
  3. I can't wait, so add my wishes for a VERY happy birthday.
  4. It seems to me that Mr. Blanchard is taking something complex, simplifying it and, in the process making it complex again, though in a different way.
  5. Yesterday, I described my jazz tastes (half-jokingly) as reaching the uptown border of downtown...say, around Chambers Street.
  6. Code "CMG2" gets you an additional 10% off
  7. Just received the following e-mail from CDBaby. I suppose it's to the band's benefit to order directly through the organissimo.org website, but another source: ---------------- Hi Be - Because you bought the "ORGANISSIMO: Waiting For The Boogaloo Sisters" CD, I thought you'd like to be the first to know we just added the NEW CD to CD Baby today: ORGANISSIMO: Groovadelphia http://cdbaby.com/cd/organissimo3 Click that link to hear the sound samples and buy it if you like it. It's in stock ready to ship. Fans of the collaborative work of MMW/John Scofield will love this smart and soulful combination of Hammond organ, Moog synthesizer, guitar, and drums with all original tunes. Its souljazz for the modern age.
  8. Online only, though... Thanks. I should have specified. Then ago, who walks into a Borders these days and expects to find any (jazz) CDs?

  10. To my tastes, the Ben Webster is prime stuff; my favorite era of his career. Some of the recordings aren't everything I'd like in terms of sound quality, but I recall a naturalness or presence that drew me in. (It's been a while since I've heard them, but that's my recollection.) I've also got the Davey Schildkraut/Tony Fruscella and have generally positive memories of it. I know the Sloane/Webster is good, but...well, I like Ben's contributions. Sloane's just one of those singers I underappreciate.
  11. There used to be a radio program - actually a show-within-a-show - featuring "Lester's People", all Pres disciples. The hosts were Bob Houlehan and Herb Wong, and it aired on KJAZ. I'll see if I can't find something in my archives. (If not already mentioned) Allen Eager ...even Dex
  12. Long-term (relatively) 30% off coupon (any item). Good until August 17th. http://www.bordersmedia.com/coup/couponap0...now+thru+8%2F17
  13. Two snowmen talkiing. "Say...do you smell carrots?"
  14. It will begin with Agent45's second post.
  15. Peaceful rest, Little Giant. And thanks.
  16. Welcome. Dive right in; the water's fine.
  17. Memory Lane. Probably of little interest to anyone but me. Fist visit to NYC. Popped out at Penn Station and headed for the nearest record store. Way up in some building in an alley (well, compared to 34th). Me, to myself: "Hey, this doesn't look like a record store". Him: "Help you with something, son?" (First encounter with a real New Yorker. ) Me: "Well I was looking for (some obscure late-40s West Coast bebop on a local label)" Him: "Never heard of it. You sure?" Me: "Uh, yeah, I'm sure." So he looks it up. Him: "Well, sure enough, it's out there, but I don't have it. Never seen it." Me: "I've got a couple others on that label..." Survived my first encounter. Never went back.
  18. The 405 at rush hour? LAX Security Screening? Burbank Architecture? Blondes in Corvettes? Bald buys with 'trophy' dates in Ferraris? Cougars? (None actually poll choices, of course) The Central Library? It's quite a nice library.
  19. But fergawdsakes, better than Topanga Canyon? The Weather? Getty Center? 99 cent Stores? In-N-Out? The Hollywood Sign? Sunset Blvd? Taco Trucks? Disneyland?!
  20. On average, I probably visit each of the Amoebas twice a year (though I'd bet its been five years since I bought anything there; it's mainly a time-kill and "let's see what's new" on a US travel layover.) No doubt, the LA store is impressive, bigger even than SF, by my reckoning. But I still see Amoeba as a Bay Area, specifically Berkeley, thing. So I guess Angelenos love their adopted child more?
  21. I like Amoeba fine, though it's Berkeley, not LA. But to think it's the best thing in Los Angeles... How long has it been there? Maybe eight or ten years? Perhaps it just strikes me as a rather shallow choice; I try not to think of Los Angelenos as shallow. I subscribe to Los Angeles magazine (among 80 or so I subscribe to and read cover-to-cover each month), but haven't ever lived in Southern California. I voted against Amoeba about half the time. http://www.losangelesmagazine.com/LAtoZ/article.aspx?id=1618 http://www.amoeba.com/content/64.html Edited to note: Amoeba arrived in LA six years ago.
  22. I was under the impression that places like Atomic Records in Burbank, and presumably our friends at Dusty Groves, still pay for collections. The Jazz Record Center and Academy in New York as well. Yes, Fred Cohen at JRC.
  23. ...not that parting with my CDs/LPs would be worse than a car accident, cancer or ???
  24. I'm bummed to see people selling off their recorded music to meet expenses. I can only hope to be spared that unpleasantness...knock wood (or whatever the expression is). To all experiencing this or other hardships, I wish you well.
  25. Just came across... http://www.larrynozero.com CDs for sale, and some interesting history and info.
