You are correct not correct, as far as I'm concerned... not correct for me, either.

I just noticed that Dennis Gonzalez has a new album available for sale on his website. It is a cdr of an October 1989 gig with Frank Lowe. Sounds interesting. I will most likely end up buying a copy, and will post a review.

thanks for bumping Flurin's post. I'm listening now.
  5. Got the discs yesterday. I am really looking forward to digging into them!

There is a review of this disc posted at Dusted. They make the album, and the choir's contribution, sound fairly bizarre.
  7. I bought my copy through cduniverse. Pi is pretty widely distributed.
  8. If I were going to start exploring this series (I currently only own two discs: a Blakey and a Byrd) which discs should be at the top of the list? Keeping in mind I can in no way, shape or form afford to buy too many of these. I'm still interested in seeing people's top choices but, after doing a search, I've already gone ahead and placed an order for ten discs. Less than $6 a disc, shipping included, Thanks for posting this!
  9. Yes, you will really enjoy it. I see that you have heard Iyer's Panoptic Modes. If you haven't picked up Iyer's Blood Sutra you should grab that one asap. Mother Tongue is one of my favorite disc of this year, so far.
  10. I've been attempting to go cold turkey too, but I had to get these titles from Chuck first: Von Freeman - Have No Fear Fred Anderson - The Missing Link Art Ensemble 1967/68 These should keep me busy for awhile! B-) I haven't heard the Von you ordered but the Fred Anderson is fantastic and the AEC set offers a wealth of material to explore. I'm still digesting the music in that set and most likely will be for years to come.
  11. everyone knows Sun Ra gets filed under "L," for Le Sonny Ra. Howlin' Wolf should get filed under "B," for Burnett, but I file him under the ' after Howlin'.
  12. my last order, before going "cold turkey" for a while, was to pick up a few more discs on Nessa: Von Freeman - Serenade & Blues Roscoe Mitchell - LRG/The Maze/S II Examples Wadada Leo Smith - Procession of the Great Ancestry as well as an Okka School Days disc, while Chuck still had the $11 sale.
  13. I didn't know Evidence was coming on board. Thanks for posting this!

Jan Strom of Ayler records posted over at JC that it is a track from the Grimes/Murray/Drake disc on this month's Wire Tapper.

I have the opposite thought right now. I'll be grabbing a copy of this one as soon as possible. I really don't understand the Ayler records catalog numbers. I'm pretty sure Ayl-09 is a new release also: Louie Belogenis, ts Roy Campbell, Jr,. tp. fl Hilliard Green, b Michael Wimberly 1. Invocation 2. Procession 3. Evocation 4. Incandescence Playing time: 47:15 Recorded in concert at The Vision Festival, The Center, 268 Mulberry, NYC. on May 24, 2003 Cover art and lay out: "The Sun Ship" by Åke Bjurhamn
  18. Yes, but a solo acoustic version, not the full band electric version that was on the radio last year.
  19. Jessica Simpson. (just to make 7/4 and Joe's posts that much more confusing...)

I've never heard of those musicians either. I'll give the mp3s a listen. Not available for order yet, but finally listed on the Ayler records webpage: aylCD-028 Henry Grimes Trio Henry Grimes, bass David Murray, ts and bcl Hamid Drake, drums

I've got their album In Our Times up on deck to listen to tomorrow for the first time. I've had a chane to listen to this one and I really like it. It didn't grab me quite as much as Nuclear Assembly Hall or Atlas did, but I suspect that has something to do with hearing it imediately after those two had already made such an impression on me. This is a really solid disc.
  22. expanded list of tour dates: 03-10 San Francisco, CA - Great American Music Hall 03-11 San Francisco, CA - Great American Music Hall 03-12 Seattle, WA - The Showbox 03-18 New York, NY - Irving Plaza 03-19 New York, NY - Irving Plaza 03-20 Boston, MA - The Roxy 03-25 Chicago, IL - Metro 03-26 Chicago, IL - Park West I might have to try to attend the show in Boston, although I'm sure it will sell out very quickly.

It's too bad you weren't able to make it up to Vermont this weekend. During the second tune Fred, William and Hamid brought the funk. It was one of the tightest, funkiest grooves I have heard outside of a PFunk show.
  24. A friend of mine bought the set for me when Target had it on sale for $28. My take on it so far is mixed. I have no problem with the sound quality, as a lot of these tracks were never meant for release. There is a lot of fantastic music, some of which rivals the best of the officially released tracks, but there is also a lot of outtakes that never needed to be heard. The DVD isn't something I will be going back to very often, especially the home rehearsal from 1988 where Kurt is staring at a wall away from the camera half of the time. If you are a big fan of NIrvana and can get a good deal on the set it is worth grabbing.

    Fred Anderson

and, speaking of Chuck, this disc, from 1979, is also essential: The reissues in the Atavistic Unheard Music series are all very good. I'm a huge fan of his duo with Hamid, Back Together Again, but his duet with Steve McCall, Vintage Duets, Chicago 11/1/80 might be even better.
