The Seattle grunge band Tad released an album called 8-Way Santa, with cover art taken from a photo they found in a thrift store: (image heavily blurred due to subsequent lawsuit) One of the people in the photo saw themselves on the cover and sued. The record was withdrawn and reissued with a very different cover: -
I agree with Joe. Axel Dörner/Kevin Drumm has yet to click with me. In fact, neither of the Drumm discs on Erstwhile are anything I return to regularly. I'm not counting The Hands of Caravaggio, as I don't consider it to be a "Drumm" disc. For Drumm I would very highly recommend Sheer Hellish Miasma which is, to my ears, his masterpiece so far. Land of Lurches is also very good, as is the orange disc on Charizma with Fennesz, Siewert, O'Rourke, et all. For Dörner I would recommend the excellent A View From the Window over this disc.

I really enjoy Roy's playing on From Valley to Valley (Eremite) by Brotzmann's Die Like a Dog Quartet, Ethnic Stew and Brew, which was mentioned above, and Nile River Suite by Dennis Gonzalez's Inspiration band. (daagnim) He is alos very good on the Brotzmann Tentet discs, but it is harder fpr me to focus on his voice in their maelstroms.

Thanks, I would love to hear that show. I'll add a copy to the package I'll be sending Tony.

At the end of a month any unused tracks disappear. You don't use them, you lose them. It sounds like that is what happened to your free 50. Yes, you get charged $10 a month regardless of how much you download. I keep a list of albums I want to download, along with how many tracks are on each. Within the first week of a new month I download all 40 tracks for the month so I don't forget and lose out on some of them.

Rooster's BFT #25, questions and logistics only...
John B replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Blindfold Test
If anyone objects to your sending them a free two cd, two hour long unreleased live concert I would be most surprised. Full steam ahead! -
Thank you for the warning! I will not place an order for this disc in that case.
-
Primarily due to Chaney's recent posts I placed an order for three Sketch discs to day. Work, Hum, and Liberté Surveillée Right now I am listening to disc one of this set: Evan Parker - 50th Birthday Concert on Leo Fantastic music! This set is Parker with Schlippenbach and Lovens. I'm really looking forward to hearing the second disc with Guy and Lytton.

I agree 100% with g.o.m. That post is offensive b.s.

Chaney, I'm definitely interested in reading your thoughts on the discs you picked up. I have only heard the Ayler disc, and it is fantastic. Enjoy!

Cadence, $35. Squidco $35 w/ no charge for shipping in the U.S.

Cadence, $35. This just went to the top of my birthday wishlist. That looks fantastic.

1. Great tune! I love the soloing by the horns. I know who these guys are, but I can’t place it right now. The pianist doesn’t sound especially competent, although that could very well be intentional. I’d love to hear more of this album. 2. From a live bootleg. That has to be Herbie Hancock. This is a fantastic performance! I just recently received some live material by this quintet, which I have yet to delve into. What else can one say about this group that hasn’t already been said. Just about as good as it gets. 3. From this album: this album This is an excellent album that deserves to be in print. Great composer, and one of his most underrated albums, in my opinion. 4. Grant and Larry. I don’t own this album, and will have to rectify that very soon. What a beautiful track. 5. No clue who this is. Nice, pleasant track. This reminds me of the two back to back tracks on disc one. Not muzak, but very relaxing, decompress from the workday music. 6. No clue. I really enjoy this one. Looking forward to seeing who this is. 7. The pianist has got to be the leader. Nice energy, nothing really jumping out at me that would give away the players. Late 50’s bop, BN? 8. I’d have to guess this is Abdullah Ibrahim, although something in the way he is playing makes me question that. I don’t know which album this is from. I really dig this. 9. No clue who this is. I am really enjoying this track and will have to pick up this album. Whoever this pianist is has a very quirky style, sort of like Monk in it’s uniqueness. Very, very nice. 10. No clue who this is. It almost sounds like Jimmy Smith-lite. Not bad, but nothing I’d go out of my way to grab a copy of. Solidly “ok.” 11. The Moontrane. Off of this sadly oop disc: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:4zr9281r053a ://http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?...:4zr9281r053a This one really deserves to back in print, as it is a fantastic live performance. Everyone is on fire here. Essential. 12. Sounds like Grant and Larry again, but I’m not familiar with this performance. I’m not liking this track as much as the earlier selection. It is solidly ok, but not more. 13. Really odd recording. The percussion is really dominant in my speakers. No clue who this is. Nothing really exciting me here. All in all two very enjoyable discs! Thanks again, and I am really looking forward to finding out the personell on the tracks I didn't know.

He got treated like shit here and left. I still see him over at IHM from time to time

Professor Truth John Flava. I've got to start using that at work. -
I'd meant to get to these discs much sooner than I did, but this past week was much crazier than I expected. that said, here are my thoughts on the first disc: Disc 1 1. I was wondering how many tracks would have vibes on your BFT. I'm not too well versed on them but, on this track, I really enjoy them. Crazy pace he has going! Who needs coffee when you've got music with this much energy? No clue who this is, but I really enjoyed the track. 2.Ok, I recognize the tune...Monk, isn't it? Not sure which tune this is. The playing seems to be a little too hesitant or tentative for my liking. Not bad, but not knocking my socks off, either. 3. Nice tune, interesting tap-dance like percussion. (or is that the sound of someone tap-dancing to the music?) No clue who this is, but I'm interested in finding out and hearing more by them. 4. Track #2 off of this: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:sqozefrkogf4 I had a hunch this would be him as soon as I heard the solo percussion w/ vocals. I know that you are a big fan of his. A master at work. 5. I kept thinking this track was going to go “free” but it stays pretty much in the pocket. Sounds like Lovano to me. No clue on the second horn. No new ground being broken here. Sounds like something from the late ‘50’s, but I’ll guess it was recorded in the early to mid ‘90s. 6. No clue who this is. More about mood than anything else. Something to listen to as background music (but not muzak) late at night as you decompress from the workday. I enjoyed this track much more than I initially thought I would. 7. Same basic reaction as track #6. Very nice mood created, without getting all new-agey. 8. Very nice track. It doesn’t really swing a lot, but it’s not overly cerebral, either. I’m really looking forward to finding out who this group is. 9. The guitar sounds like Kenny Burrell to me, no clue who is on vibes and drums. This one isn’t doing a lot for me. Too polite, perhaps. 10. My least favorite track so far. This has to be from the mid-1970’s or so. Fusion that doesn’t fuse. I like the vibes, but the guitar player sounds like he is attempting a different song than everyone else. Just does not click for me. 11. No clue. Nice track. The writing stands out more tha the playing for me. Competent, but not especially flashy playing. Curious to read who this is. I'm wondering if this is someone from the Jazz Composer's Collective? I'll guess Ben Allison, but that is just a stab in the dark. 12.Track #3 from this: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:7k967ui010jf I love this rhythm section,. This is just a beautiful album. One of my favorites by the bass player as a leader. I think a lot of people who haven't given him a listen because of the company he sometimes keeps would be pleasantly surprised by this disc. 13. More Monk interpretation? No clue who this is. A very nice take on the tune. 14. Sorry, not my cup of tea at all. No clue, not really interested in finding out. 15. I recognize the tenor’s tone, but just can’t place it now. This one is going to drive me crazy. I’m not familiar with the album, however. I’d prefer to hear him w/out the big band backing. Nice track but not something I’d return to very often. 16. A very nice way to close the disc, unfortunately. I don’t own a copy of this one, but will make sure to track it down. I’ve been going through all of my discs by him this week and am still amazed by how fresh and vital his playing from the ‘50s sounds in 2005. RIP Great first disc, Cary! I’ll try to get my thoughts on disc #2 posted tomorrow.

As much as I love returning to my old favorites I probably love discovering something new (to me) even more. My taste is extremely eclectic, ranging from jazz to blues to eai to reggae to fela to avant-garde to noise to rock, etc... Good music is good music, regardless of genre.

What is or was the best photo of a jazz musician?
John B replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I don't know about "ultimate," but the photo of Louis Armstrong in the Swiss Kriss ad is certainly one of the most unusual. -
I really enjoy this album and would highly recommend it. The album relyles mentioned, ...and William Danced, is also fantastic.
-
I just read a comment by a reviewer on another board that this disc is "very, very nice." I'll be picking up a copy very soon after it is released.

Isn't this eerily similar to the story of the Four Freshmen in the 1950's? Yes, I believe that everything detailed in the Mayhem bio really did occur. Those scamps!
-
all of the two Live at Club Baby Grand cds. Those need to be released domestically in the U.S.

Mark and Jeff, The site is fantastic! Great work. Wonderful photos and easy navigation.
