  1. I didn't mean to imply that at all. I was trying to give some context for Lightning bolt to dave and Chaney. I picked up their album after you told me about them., It is amazing! I can't even begin to imagine how they must be live. 20 cds will most definitely be more than I need to hear at first but, at $4 a pop, it's hard not to go for the whole shebang.

I don't recall hearing any vocalizations when I listened to this one earlier today. I'll give it another spin this weekend and let you know for sure.

It is fantastic! Better than I had remembered. I will try to post a more thorough review later but, for now, I will highly recommend it.
  4. We had a brief discussion on this album over in the Funny Rat thread, in the Recommendations forum. Those of you interested in free / avant-garde / eai / anything else non-bop should stop in and say hello! That being said I really enjoy this album! Nothing too "out," so I would recommend this disc to a lot of people who aren't fans of free jazz. Lots of energy, great playing, some nice tunes.
  5. I'll put this one on hold for you. Send me a private message with your address and payment details, thanks!
  6. I need to sell some of my Mosaics and other box sets, so I thought I would list these here and give you all first dibs before trying ebay. All sets are cd, all are in near mint condition, with the exception of the Thad Jones, which has a tear along the spine of the box, which has been taped up. Please send me a PM and let me know if you have any questions about any of these sets. Shipping in the U.S. will be $10 per Mosaic, $5 for the other sets. For international shipping I would charge whatever the actual cost would be. Mosaics: Thad Jones - MD3-172 (3cds) $90 Tristano/Konitz/Marsh - MD6-174 (6cds) $120 Hank Mobley - MD6-181 (6cds) $90 Andrew Hill - MD7-161 (7 cds) $200 (SOLD) Sam Rivers - MD3-167 (3cds) $60 (SOLD) Lee Morgan 50's - MD4-162 (4cds) $100 (SOLD) Woody Shaw - MD3-142 (3cds) $70 (SOLD) Randy Weston Select (3cds) $25 ($5 shipping) (SOLD) Other sets: Sonny Rollins - Complete Prestige Recordings (7cds) $55 (SOLD) Wadada Leo Smith - Kabell Years 1971-1979 (Tzadik, 4cds) $28 (SOLD) Golden Years of the New Soviet Jazz vol. 1 (Leo 4cds) $25 (SOLD) Golden Years of the New Soviet Jazz vol. 4 (Leo 4cds) $25 (SOLD) Individual cds: Shipping for these is $1 within the U.S., $4 internationally Sonny Rollins - Newk's Time RVG (sealed, from BMG) $5 (SOLD) Matt Wilson - As Wave Follows Wave $5 (SOLD)

When I saw Eneidi live I wasn't impressed by the first 2/3 of the show but, once the band got warmed going, they were fantastic. I think someone like Broetz could really bring out the best in Marco's playing. The only disc of his I own is Cherry Box, on Eremite. I really enjoy it, but, as William Parker is on bass, some of you might want to be cautious...

I love the Hemingway! I think you will really enjoy it.

I've been meaning to listen to more discs with Peter Kowald as a leader. Recently, I have been re-listening to the three discs I own and need to get some more, probably starting with Was Da Ist. Right now I am listening to Touch the Earth - Break the Shells (FMP) with Wadada Leo Smith and Gunter Sommer. This is a great album! Wonderful playing and some very interesting compositions.

over on another board, Derek Taylor posted a brief review of the new Brotzmann / Eneidi disc on Boticelli which, along with Nate's comments here, makes this one sound very interesting, indeed. "it’s brutal & ornery like a punch to the face, but I dig it. Eneidi jibes w/ Brötz in terms of feral ferocity, giving as good as he gets. Both spew white hot vibrato aplenty. Krall sounds like he’s sawed all his drum heads down to sharkskin edges. Even the quieter sections have barbs sharp enough to draw blood. Uncooked recording too that actually adds to the experience. "

Interesting. Based on your initial comments this one sounds like a winner. I'm curious to hear this one now.

If any of you are interested in Yo, Miles!, Henry Kaiser and Wadada Leo Smiths 1970's Miles "tribute" band, this site has a 3 disc show from 2000 available for download in shn format. This show also features ROVA sitting in.
  13. I have heard one Lightning Bolt album - Beautiful Rainbow - and, while it is an amazing album, I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with Jandek musically.
  14. Man, that really sucks. Kulu has the right idea. Time to bust out the first few albums and remember the good times. Hopefully this documentary will play somewhere near here.
  15. If I ever get the Jandek mix that is supposed to be on its way to me I'll burn you a copy. I've never heard him either, as MS Media Player refuses to recognize the sound samples on the Aquarius site.
  16. If this is on a weekend I might have to do a road trip.
  17. problem solved. I have a few tracks that did not download completely. Thanks again to ubu for posting this link!
  18. Get the Trojan Nyahbinghi box. It is fantastic! My favorite box of their so far. Other next albums to get that I consider to be essential: The Congos - Heart of the Congos Augustus Pablo - Original Rockers Augustus Pablo - East of the River Nile Burning Spear - Marcus Garvey / Garvey's Ghost Bunny Wailer - Blackheart Man Culture - Two Sevens Collide
  19. did any of you notice this link to a Jandek merchandise (unofficial) webpage on the Jandek list? The coffee mug would be a great gift for a coworker who has no clue who Jandek is. Someone on the list replied with the idea of adding "Jandek World Tour 2004" to the back of the shirts, which is pretty funny, if you know the back story.

I'm always a fan of hearing more Miles with Pete Cosey. I'd love to have a box set of live shows from the Agharta / Pangea era.
  21. I reallyenjoy RL Burnside, but I would recommend avoiding his albums with the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and any albums that feature electronics or a DJ and start out with one of his grittier trio albums. My favorites are the live Burnside on Burnside, Mr. Wizard and Too Bad Jim.

thank you for posting these links, ubu! I'll listen to the Miles once I get home from the gym tonight. I enjoyed the live Prince shows a lot more than I expected to. I downloaded them for a friend who is a Prince fanatic and gave the San Jose show a listen before giving him the cdrs. Great stuff!

Never heard of Luther Thomas... I haven't listened to him in a while, but I really enjoyed Funky Donkey and his other album on the Unheard Music Series. I'll have to pull them out again sometime soon. The closest album I can think of to them that you might have heard is Joe McPhee's Nation Time. It has a similar mix of free jazz and funk.
  24. I spent some downtime I had this morning putting together my list of 20 discs to buy. Mostly I'm sticking with the first 20, but I've got a few randow later ones mixed in. Now I just need to wait for my next paycheck to place the order!
  25. There is a Jandek board?
