  1. Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Turkey Day Collection (XXXI) [Limited-Edition Collector's Tin] now only $17.56 This set contains 4 films including the killer worms classic, Squirm, as well as The Screaming Skull, The Jungle Goddess, and a Lassie movie called The Painted Hills. They are four pretty strong (and funny) episodes from the series. and Mystery Science Theater 3000: 20th Anniversary Edition (First Spaceship on Venus / Laserblast / Werewolf / Future War) now only $17.97 Werewolf is a classic "bad" movie made all the more gripping and suspenseful by featuring a leading lady who constantly makes the audience ask themselves, "What did she say?"
  2. Kind of felt more like a gangster picture than a western. Walter Huston (in his final film) plays T.C. Jeffords, a powerful and feared New Mexico cattle baron. Barbara Stanwyck plays his daughter, Vance (kind of a warm up for her later role on The Big Valley). Father and daughter are very much alike in personality, spirit and drive and there is more than a little hint of a deeper "love" between them (being as his wife/her mother is dead). When another woman comes along to vie for her father's affections and when he betrays Vance by killing one of her closest friends, she sets off on a revenge quest to take control of the family business from him. Great performances by those two stars. Wendell Corey read his lines well, I guess, but it's hard to imagine a woman like Barbara Stanwyck getting hot and bothered by a cardboard cut-out like him.
  3. Ron Carter topped today's list of celebrity birthdays published daily in my local newspaper. Also celebrating his 80th today -- guitarist Dick Dale! I wonder if those two octogenarians will be recording a duo project any time soon? Happy Birthday, Mr. Carter!
  4. In memory of SF bay area bassist John Shifflet who passed away last week at age 64 of pancreatic cancer. I saw him along with drummer Jason Lewis (both heard here) a few times as part of the young Taylor Eigsti's trio back in the 1990's.
  5. A film which at least always holds one's interest with a marvelous performance by Shelley Winters. The cast also includes the young Christopher Walken and Jeff Goldblum and the always enjoyable Lou Jacobi. There is also a blink-and-you'll-miss-him appearance by Bill Murray. A plus for me was the DBQ music included in the soundtrack even if "Three To Get Ready" and "Blue Rondo a la Turk" did not yet exist in 1953.
  6. Disc 2 of 2, which contains the episodes "The Spanish Suitcase" and "The Last Tram (from Clapham)", both from 1954.
  7. Bobby Enriquez as the guest on a 1990 episode of Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz http://www.npr.org/event/music/464011940/bobby-enriquez-on-piano-jazz
  8. A couple of nights ago, I watched this documentray and it inspired me to listen to some of her music again. It's a well done look at her life, including interviews with her, Graham Nash, Larry Klein, David Crosby and others. If the Nobel committee is still interested in honoring songwriters for their literary contributions, I would recommend they give Ms. Mitchell's body of work their undivided attention. I hope she is doing well now given her current circumstances.
  9. Recorded April 27 & 28, 1990
  10. There is one solo track on this holiday compilation
  11. Recorded April 26, 1978
  12. Discs 3 & 4 of 8. With Buck Clayton, Buddy Tate, Dickie Wells, Budd Johnson, Sir Charles Thompson, Marlowe Morris, Milt Hinton, Jo Jones and more.
