  1. Yeah, I actually like that track a lot. Now playing:
  2. This disc also includes 4 tracks by Bill Doggett interspersed among the Charles Brown tracks. When I first got this CD decades ago, I thought those Doggett tracks were kind of cheesy, but now I have come to enjoy them. Holiday music from the likes of Solomon Burke, George Jones & Tammy Wynette, Rufus Thomas, Foghat, Huey Piano Smith and little Augie Rios among others.
  3. A timeless performance from exactly 50 years ago today, December 17, 1968 -- Here she was just 6 months before her final curtain, still learning new material and still delivering a remarkable performance despite a bit of hoarseness (which actually works in the context of the song). She could say more with just a look and a little head nod than most of today's singers can with all the overheated melisma at their disposal.
  4. This disc always gets a listen each year.
  5. I'm very sorry to hear this. I have to admit I was late in coming to appreciate Nancy Wilson. I had to "get" Jimmy Scott first and then I could could go back and re-listen to and "get" Nancy Wilson, if you know what I mean. But when I fell for her, I fell hard and I have a dozen or so CDs by her. She maintained her voice well and she sounded good right to her final recording. She knew when she wanted to retire and when she did, she stayed retired. I was reading the liner notes to a Ramsey Lewis compilation CD recently, and Mr. Lewis said he had tried coaxing her back to performing a couple of times, but she always said she'd had enough. I hope she enjoyed every minute of her career and her retirement as well. Thank you Ms. Wilson, for a trove of beautiful music. May you Rest in Peace.
  6. I especially liked their version of "The Chipmunk Song".
  7. I've always loved this song. I'm surprised more singers have not recorded it. Gerry Mulligan recorded his own vocal version of this song many years later. I heard that version before I even knew about the existence of this one. Learning about this recording by the two of them makes that later recording all the more poignant.
  8. The best gypsy jazz styled Christmas album I've found.
  9. An entertaining array of holiday music from such performers as Irma Thomas, the Louvin Brothers, NRBQ, Charles Brown, David Grisman, Brave Combo, George Thorogood and Joseph Spence.
  10. It took a long time to find an affordable copy of this disc, but i found a still sealed copy at a reasonable price this year. Johnny Costa, the pianist from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, recorded this CD back in 1996 it looks like. Good swinging performances and one tune ("Kingly Gifts") was even co-written by Mr. Rogers!
  11. Dave Brubeck's alma mater, UOP, has for many years hosted an annual music festival bearing his name and for years the DBQ was the central attraction for the festival. One year, the theme behind the DBQ's appearance at that festival was to be a live performance of the Time Out LP (maybe it was the 50th anniversary of that album). Ultimately, Dave himself was unable to attend but his son Darius filled in admirably for him and it was a pretty good concert, even if none of the original members of the DBQ who recorded that album made it to that performance.
  12. A super compilation with a weak album cover. The Impressions version of "Silent Night" is both danceably groovy and sincerely reverent at the same time and the two Otis Redding tracks are among his very finest performances.
  13. Wow! I'm glad there was a lot of love for the Barbara Dennerlein CD. I like it, although personally, I could have done without her vocals. I hope there is some shared enthusiasm for this next disc too:
