  1. Forget the lame cover art. This is the young, fresh Count Basie band heard in "live" broadcasts from the Famous Door in NYC. The sound on these tracks recorded off the radio nearly 80 years ago can be kind of rusty, but the excitement of the band and its music shines through.
  2. I have that CD. Long, long ago, when I was a lad, Porter Wagoner had a weekly syndicated TV show on which Ms. Parton was prominently featured. In addition to her singing duties, she also had to do a "live" commercial for one of the show's sponsors, a laundry detergent (I think it was Duz brand). I can never look at a photo of Dolly Parton from that era without recalling her saying the phase "and there's a free towel in every box!".
  3. ! I'm listening to Disc 4 from this set myself.
  4. I did not know that. Reading the very small print on the reproduction of the back album cover for Sentimental & Melancholy included on this CD I found this: Both teamed musically for the first time at Joe's thirteenth birthday party when he publicly gave his first solo performance accompanied by Jimmy on the five string banjo.
  5. Both albums arranged and conducted by Jimmy Jones.
  6. Pretty good compilation which makes for an enjoyable listening experience.
  7. Two albums (from 1960 and 1962) on one CD.
  8. Now playing: Such a great cover illustration too!
