I've been listening to some of Paul Motian's last small group records -- some with Frisell and Lovano, and others with other people, including some with vocalists. They are very fine and likable records. I am thinking there must be more music recorded, and wonder whether they will become available some time. Perhaps Frisell and Lovano, or Manfred Eicher or the fellow who runs Winter & Winter will put them out. Hope so. I miss the days when we could expect at least one new Motian record a year.

I recently bought the following 3 CDs from the bassist Max Johnson: Max Johnson Quartet (Not Two) [quartet w/ S. Swell, M. Whitecage, T. Sorey] Max Johnson, "The Prisoner" (NoBusiness) [quartet w/ I. Laubrock, M. Maneri, T. Fujiwara] Ross Martin, Max Johnson, & Jeff Davis, "Big Eyed Rabbit" (Not Two) [trio] For some reason, unlike his other recordings, these just don't work for me. The total, including shipping, was $45. They can be yours for $36 including shipping. Any takers? Each was played 1-3 times, and is absolutely pristine. I also have a much more extensive trade/sell list that I can send you if you are interested.

Any recommendation for blues playing on acoustic guitar?
Bol replied to Bol's topic in Recommendations
Thanks, everyone. I should have realized this before, but this is a bit dangerous -- getting interested in another genre of music! -
I've never been a big fan of the blues music, and know nothing about it really. But yesterday, as I was driving, I was listening to Fresh Air on NPR, and Terry Gross was interviewing Phil and Dave Alvin who are blues singer-guitarists. Each played and sang a song with just his acoustic guitar and I found it fascinating. I thought the guitar playing sounded almost avant grade -- almost like Derek Bailey. I was wondering if people could recommend some good blues played on acoustic guitar, with or without vocals, and with or without any other instrumental backings. Thanks.

Is that Gerry Mulligan CD hard to find; I recall this one quite a bit in the used bin at Amoeba in Los Angeles. The Nick Travis was on RCA (reissued by Fresh Sound; don't know if it's still in print); would it be in this series? The old 1980's Mulligan from Columbia is quite easy to find. But the sound leaves much to be desired. Very flat and metallic. I would love a new remaster. I've never seen the Fresh Sound Travis, but I doubt that it is legit. I don't see why it can't be in this series as it is RCA, there have been plenty of RCA recordings in this series.
-
I wonder whether there will be further releases in this series. I hope so, as there are a few Columbia or RCA records that could use a CD or remaster treatment -- e.g. Gerry Mulligan's "What is There to Say?", a couple more Jazz Lab records from Donald Byrd & Gigi Gryce, Nick Travis's "The Panic is On", Tony Scott's records, and some rarely-issued Dave Brubeck. All would be very welcome.

I think, as you say, getting "ecstatic" in non-believable way in one of the features of his various recordings I don't like. Same when I saw him in person once. Not a fan of "ecstatic" even in Coltrane. I guess "unction" might be a good term for this.

I was wondering what people think of Malaby's recordings. His "Adobe" on Sunnyside is the first of his recordings I ever got, and it is one of my favorite recordings of last dozen years or so. But I've tried half a dozen of his other recordings ("Paloma Recio", "Warblepeck", "Tamarindo", etc.) and I've been disappointed with all of them. Unlike "Adobe", these other recordings seem to me just aimless and aggressive in gratuitous ways. The fact that Paul Motian is on "Adobe" may make a difference, but I also really like Mark Helias's Open Loose recordings that Malaby plays on along with Tom Rainey. So, it can't be just Paul Motian who is making a difference.

Is there any difference between copies of this set available domestically and those available in the UK? Am thinking of ordering from an Amazon marketplace seller in the UK. Thanks in advance.

Hmmm… I really like Lewis's early recordings on Atlantic, and his one record on Pacific Jazz with Jim Hall, Bill Perkins, and others. I love his elegant, sparsely-noted swing. I only have two later records of his, and had not thought that they are that different from his early records.

I am curious. Do people like Milt Jackson's playing in MJQ? Whenever I listen to a record by them, I can't help but think that it would be a whole lot better if it were Modern Jazz Trio, without Jackson. I'd be able hear a lot more of John Lewis's playing without the distracting vibes.

$123.50 each (including insured shipping in Continental U.S.) The Complete Serge Chaloff Sessions (MD4-147) 4-CD set CDs & inserts in excellent condition. The box and booklet show some signs of use and yellowing from age. (I bought this set used some time ago.) The box has some light scratches on front, and has a bump on the top left corner (which appears to be something that was there from the beginning, as the result of manufacturing). The Complete Recordings of the Paul Desmond Quartet with Jim Hall (MD4-120) 4-CD set CDs & inserts in excellent condition. The box and booklet show some signs of use and yellowing from age. (I bought this set used some time ago.) $213.50 (including insured shipping in Continental U.S.) The Complete Anita O'Day Verve/Clef Sessions (MD9-188) 9-CD set Everything in excellent condition. Most of the CD's listened to only 1-3 times.

** No Box, No Booklet ** SOLD!! 18 CD's and inserts all in excellent condition. Price: $193.00 -- including insured shipping in the continental US. I hope people think this is a good price -- basically $10 per CD + insured shipping. The complete set seems to go for $450-$500 on eBay. I myself don't think that the booklet and box are worth $260-$310.

I recently found this 2010 recording by a young Portuguese trumpeter at SF Amoeba. It's a quartet recording with Bill McHenry on tenor and two Portuguese musicians forming the rhythm section. McHenry is his usual great self, and his presence is what motivated me to buy the CD unheard. But what have really impressed me, after multiple listens in the last 2 weeks, are the leader's elegant trumpet playing and his compositions, both devoid of cliches and showiness. Marques is apparently a former student of John McNeil's, and you can hear the resemblance. Marques does not have the impish humor of his teacher, but his lines are cleaner. Just a very very likable recording that wears very well over multiple listens. It is put out by a Portuguese label called Toap.

I was glad to see the new issue up. I've been wanting to ask people: why is there the "Travelin' Light" column? Why would anyone read this column? What should anyone care about these tidbits about musicians' traveling habits? Say, anymore than their shopping habits or childrearing ideas? It just seems like desultory set of info, and seems kind of weird that the folks at Point of Departure would use time and energy to keep this up.

I was waiting for this to be available on one of the domestic US sellers' websites, but never did. Anyone have a lead?

I wish there would be a Zoot Sims Pablo box set -- like the Dexter Gordon set put out by Concord some years back. Some of the CDs sound a bit flat. Many of my favorite sax players sound a bit too sentimental in their later years. Zoot Sims seems to be an exception, and his Pablo recordings are some of his best.
