  3. I don't know if these are my favorites from the year, as I have not really taken a thorough look at what was issued when. But these are some of the new CDs I've enjoyed the most this past year: Chick Corea, "Further Explorations" (Concord) Kirk Knuffke & Jesse Stacken, "Like a Tree" (SteepleChase) Kirk Knuffke & Ted Brown, "Pound Cake" (SteepleChase) Bill McHenry, "Peur du Vide" (Sunnyside) Talking Cows, "Almost Human" (Morvin) I must say, I really miss getting new recordings from Paul Motian. The Corea recording would not have been the same w/o Motian, and the McHenry recording would have been even better with Motian. I hope there are fair number of unissued sessions that were done with him and that will be issued over the coming years. And I kick myself for not ever being in NYC at the right time to hear him live.
  4. Thanks. I'm hoping to get a copy of the Sony SRCS Mastersound remaster, which I usually like very much.
  5. If you have and are willing to part with this CD, I'm very interested. Thanks.
  6. There is a nice, heartfelt tribute to Dave Brubeck by the political commentator E.J. Dionne in Washington Post today. But there is also this comment by one of the readers. "Pretty much you can blame Brubeck and Charlie Parker for the demise of Jazz. Their tendency to blow notes that have no resemblance or contribution to the theme of the tune made Jazz irrelevent to music. You had to be "enlightened" to pretend you were enjoying the crap they were putting out." Amazing!

  8. Somewhat - but that album is very heavy on In a Silent Way/Bitches Brew material. In the summer/fall of 1969, the band was still playing a lot of material from earlier in the '60s (Footprints, Masquelero) and even some tunes from the '50s (Round Midnight, Milestones, No Blues). Even those tunes get pretty abstract, though. Hmmm. That sounds very intriguing. I will check it out. Thanks.
  9. So, would the music on this set sound like the one in "Live at Fillmore East: It's About That Time" from March 1970?

  12. Yes, Live at Birdland. Thanks. Anyone with an opinion as to how good this recording is?
  13. Glad to hear that this is coming out. But I myself could have done without the Imani Winds and more of the quartet. When I attended a concert with IW, I found the performance rather ungainly and boring. The pieces didn't breathe like the pieces with just the quartet. And I wish there was a recording of the dates with Jason Moran. Would be interested in hearing the differences.
  14. So, is the stand-alone single CD selling for $18.99 the newer session with Greg Osby? Not very clear information on the website.
  15. I bought this 2-LP set after reading this review and watching some videos on YouTube: http://freejazz-stef.blogspot.com/2012/05/thing-with-barry-guy-metal-nobusiness.html The Thing are Mats Gustafsson, Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten, and Paal Nilssen-Love, and is here joined by Barry Guy. Alas, it is not for me. I guess I like my free jazz a little less exuberant. I listened to the 2 LP's only once -- I actually listened to only the first 3 sides. So the set is practically new. The price of the set is $35.00 plus shipping at most sellers. It is yours for $24.00 including shipping within continental USA. Any takers? SOLD!!
  16. Thanks folks. I do have a record brush and use a couple of different stylus-cleaning solutions that I use between spins.
  17. I've had a turntable only for a couple of years, and am not an audio equipment-phile by any means. I have a question some may be able to answer. When I play some of my records, the hi hat cymbal sounds less than crisp. It sounds like scattered electric noise, rather than the cymbals being struck crisply. I don't know how else to put it. Is there something I can do to improve the sound? This seems to happen especially often when I play the 200g audiophile Blue Note LP's from Classic Records. Perhaps this has to do with the quality of pressing more than my turntable (Rega P1), but perhaps I can do something to my turntable to improve the sound? Any help would be much appreciated.

  20. Very sad to hear that PT is ending its run. Three cheers for Dan Warburton and the fellow writers. They introduced me to some fabulous music that I would not have otherwise gotten into.
  21. I did go to Jazz Messengers 6 years ago when I was here. I didn't think at the time that they had anything that I couldn't get from sellers in the US. In any case, they will be closed for the next 2 days. I will try to check out Jamboree. Thanks.
  22. Anyone have recommendations? I'm here for a couple of days.
  23. No, not at all. It's just that Brownie was the first to really speak up for the album.
  24. Hmmm... Now, I think that I should really look for it. The fact that it is essentially a string quartet intrigues me. Thanks, everyone.
  25. I've read something similar in a James Joyce biography once. Some Parisian hostess invited Joyce and Proust to dinner. Both came, to everyone's surprise in Proust's case. The hostess sat them down next to each other thinking that a great conversation would ensue, and everyone else would just bask in the resulting delight. But the only exchange occurred when Joyce turned to Proust mid-dinner, and asked "Do you like bon bons?" and Proust replied "No." God knows whether it is true, but it should be true.
