  5. I love the sax-bass-drum trio format. But this one is a little different. Swallow's electric bass gives the album a different sonic texture compared to sax-bass-drum trio albums that use upright basses. . . . So you get a bit less low-end heft and a bit more guitar-istic delicacy. IMO, this is the best Eastern Rebellion album -- in no small part because of Big George.
  6. I should pull that Ruggles album from the shelf & give it a spin. It's been a long while since I've heard it.
  7. Brahms: Piano Works, Opp. 116-119 / Dmitri Alexeev (EMI)
  8. Sorry to hear this news, but I'm grateful for the music. R.I.P.
  9. Back to the big Charles Ives box: Outstanding performances -- and the AQ is much improved compared to previous releases.

  13. Etta Jones - If You Could See Me Now (Muse, 1979)
  14. Now dipping into this treasure chest: The Complete Duke Ellington - 1947-1952: Recorded Works In Chronological Order (CBS France) Sides E & F If I'm ever having a stressful day, I pull this set from the shelf. It never fails to elevate my spirits. It's some potent medicine.
