  1. Yeah! Great stuff.
  2. A must for Beirach-ophiles (like yours truly). My introduction to the Soprano Summit many years ago.
  3. Herbie Mann & Ramsey Lewis would definitely be at the top of my list. I'd also throw Gato Barbieri in there (especially the A&M stuff and after). Quite a few albums by Hank Crawford and Bobby Hackett too. Of course, I like these musicians or I wouldn't bring the LPs home in the first place. But I definitely have more because it's so common to stumble across inexpensive copies.
  4. Now spinning: Herbie Mann - The Evolution of Mann (Atlantic, 2-LPs) This 1972 compilation is one of many Herbie Mann albums that I've found in dollar bins. Just like @Teasing the Korean notes on this thread.
  5. Astonishing solo piano.
  6. No doubt! Partly due to the fact that Mann was incredibly prolific. . . . Also, African Suite was released in Johnny Rae's name, rather than Mann's. (I assume this was to get around contractual obligations.)
  7. No surprise there. It's got "your guy" on bass: George Duvivier. Actually, I love Duvivier too. I just think you were the one who made me sit up & listen to him carefully.
  8. It's good stuff! After making With Flute to Boot with Machito, Mann formed his own Afro-Latin band. Along with African Suite, I'm especially partial to Flute, Brass, Vibes and Percussion.
  9. Very nice. Sometimes it's the little things that make a big difference, no? Hearing Philly Joe with those three percussionists is something special.
  10. Looks interesting. The Feed the Fire band.
  11. Now spinning: Jimmie Rowles - Shade and Light (Ahead, 1978) with George Duvivier & Oliver Jackson
  12. Roy Eldridge - Dale's Wail (Verve, 2 LPs) Supremely relaxed small-group swing. Eldridge's absolute mastery is evident in every note.
  13. Yep. It's a good one.
  14. Now streaming: Vibraphone – Johnny Rae Flute, Bass Clarinet – Herbie Mann Piano – Bob Corwin Bass – Jack Six Drums – "Philly Joe" Jones Percussion – Carlos "Patato" Valdes, Jose Mangual, Victor Pantoja
  15. ETC [Steve La Spina, Fred Hersch, Jeff Hirshfield] Plus One [Jerry Bergonzi] (Red, 1993)
  16. Disc 2 - Two complete albums: Linda Ronstadt and Heart Like a Wheel
  17. I don't speak Portuguese, so I can't say. But it makes sense!
  18. Now playing: Antonio Carlos Jobim - Em Minas Ao Vivo: Piano e Voz (Biscoito Fino BR, 2004) Archival release of an intimate concert recording from 1981
  19. That was only my first listen. I recently picked up the CD at library book sale. Initial impressions: It sounded like "old-school" (as in mid-20th c.) Bach. Romanticized and rhapsodic, rather than architectural. Not at all HIP -- but I enjoyed it. What are your thoughts on Pires' Bach?
