  1. This LP continues to be in heavy rotation at this listener's house: Lou Donaldson - Cosmos (Blue Note, 1971) George Butler produced this LP, but (aside from the voices) I think it sounds more like soul jazz that Bob Porter was producing for Prestige around that same time. The key sidemen on Cosmos are Porter regulars: Melvin Sparks, Leon Spencer, and Idris Muhammad. That (relatively) stripped-down, not over-produced "Bob Porter-like" soul jazz sound is one of the reasons I've been enjoying this LP so much.
  2. That looks very interesting. I'd love to hear your impressions after you've had a chance to absorb the music.
  3. That's great to hear!
  4. Norma Winstone - Edge of Time (Argo, 1972) 2012 Wah Wah Records (Barcelona, Spain) reissue I was surprised to see a US-based seller on Discogs offering this LP for a very reasonable price -- so I jumped on it. Last summer, I had a chance to visit Wah Wah Records in Barcelona and picked up their vinyl reissue of Neil Ardley's A Symphony of Amaranths. It was beautifully done, so I'm looking forward to hearing this Norma Winstone LP.
  5. Now spinning: Chick Corea - My Spanish Heart (Polydor, 1976, 2 LPs)
  6. Now playing: Ralph Peterson Quintet - V (Blue Note/Somethin' Else, 1989) with Terence Blanchard, Steve Wilson, Geri Allen (!!!), and Phil Bowler
  7. I'll be getting this one, for sure.
  8. Next up: Michael Carvin - The Camel (rec. 1975) Another SteepleChase > Inner City release Sonny Fortune plays some lovely soprano sax on this album.
  9. Now: Lee Konitz - Lone-Lee: Solo (Inner City, rec. 1974) licensed from SteepleChase Earlier: Neil Ardley - A Symphony of Amaranths (Regal Zonophone, 1971) Wah Wah Records (ES) 2018 vinyl reissue I tracked down that LP after you recommended it a few years ago.
  10. Me neither. The original album is perfection. Why mess with it?
  11. Yes!!! AMAZING music!
  12. Richard "Groove" Holmes - New Groove (Groove Merchant, 1974) with O'Donel Levy, Bernard Purdie, and others
  13. - Tracks 1 to 6 originally released as Travelin' Light with Kenny Burrell. - Tracks 7 to 12 originally released as Soul Sister.
  14. Now streaming: Winstone's brilliant debut as a leader -- with a Who's-Who of Brit jazzers supporting her.
  15. The Michael Garrick Sextet with Norma Winstone - The Heart is a Lotus (Argo, 1970) Vocalion CD reissue
  16. Now streaming: Ryo Kawasaki - Ring Toss (Chiaroscuro, 1977) with Larry Willis, Sam Morrison, Badal Roy, and others Interesting music that aims high and convincingly pulls in disparate elements. I hear some echoes of McLaughlin (and Shakti) in Kawasaki's playing & music -- but not disturbingly so. I particularly dig the vocalist, Rhada Shottam, who contributes wordless vocals à la Norma Winstone. Speaking of Winstone . . . She is fantastic on that record! That's my "go to" record for Nucleus, in no small part because of her.
  17. Most definitely. Charles Stepney !!! Stone classic!
