  1. I totally agree. It's an amazing record. So happy to hear this news! I've wanted this record for a long time.
  2. Both last night and again today: Elvin Jones, Masabumi Kikuchi - Hollow Out (Philips JP, 1973) with Gene Perla (b) I've enjoyed this album for the last few years -- but suddenly it's opened up for me. Slow growers feel so good when they bloom out of the blue.
  3. Next up: Roland Hanna - Glove (BlackHawk/Trio JP) with George Mraz and Motohiko Hino; recorded in 1977
  4. More Lieb: The Dave Liebman Group - Turnaround: The Music of Ornette Coleman (Jazzwerkstatt, 2010)
  5. The Dave Liebman Group - Conversation (Sunnyside, 2003) with Vic Juris (g), Tony Marino (b), and Marko Marcinko (d, perc) Outstanding. This was a terrific band, one of Lieb's finest, imo. RIP Vic Juris. Speaking of Liebman . . .
  6. These two albums were my gateway to jazz: First KoB and then Mingus at Antibes. I discovered both during my sophomore year in college.
  7. More Peter Herbolzheimer: Waitaminute (MPS, 1973) I'm not familiar with those. Thanks for the heads-up.
  8. Cool! This will be fun to hear. I think we're lucky that so many archival recordings from Europe are being made available; for example, the NDR series, the OTRF stuff, the recordings from Onkel Pös Carnegie Hall, and now this Dutch Jazz in Paradiso series. There are examples of archival releases from the U.S. -- like the Left Bank Jazz Society, the Penthouse, or the Keystone Korner -- but it seems like there's SO MUCH more from European sources. I suppose this is because these recordings were often made for radio broadcast in Europe. In any case, I'm glad that these sorts of thing are being released.
  9. Now streaming: Remembering Peter Herbolzheimer: Sunshine and Bossa Nova (HGBS, 2 CDs) Tracks 1-9 originally released as My Kind of Sunshine (MPS, 1972) Does the person making that statement mean good musical quality or good audio/recording quality? Either way, it seems like an absurd thing to say. Yup. That Harold Land album is one of many examples that we could name.
  10. NP: Tito Puente & His Orchestra - Puente Goes Jazz (RCA, rec. 1956) Timbales, Vibraphone – Tito Puente Alto Saxophone – Gene Quill Tenor Saxophone – Marty Holmes Trumpet – Bernie Glow, Nick Travis Guitar – Barry Galbraith Piano – Alvin Gellers Bass – Bobby Rodriguez Bongos – Mongo Santamaria, Willy Correa
  11. I saw Christian McBride's New Jawn last night -- with Josh Evans (tr), Marcus Strickland (b cl, ts), and Nasheet Waits (d). It was an excellent show. I enjoyed it very much. It was at the City Winery, an Atlanta venue I'd never been to before. The set up sort of reminded me of Jazz Standard in NYC, but the City Winery is a little bit larger.
  12. I'm listening to Triangle again: Excellent stuff.
  13. Sorry to hear of your loss, TTK. But I'm happy that Pyewacket was able to stay with you longer than expected. I've only become a cat person in the last ten years or so. I've always enjoyed cats; I'd just never lived with one. I grew up with dogs. Now we have two cats, and I've discovered how wonderful they are.
  14. More Joe Bonner: with Clint Houston & Billy Hart, rec. 1975 Outstanding!
  15. Next up: Bill O'Connell & the Afro Caribbean Ensemble - Wind Off the Hudson (Savant, 2019)
  16. Now listener to another drummer's album from the 70s that also features guitarist Tommy Bolin: Billy Cobham - Spectrum (Atlantic, 1973) I like this album -- but I like Mind Transplant more.
  17. Shifting gears: Alphonse Mouzon - Mind Transplant (Blue Note, 1975)
  18. More Kikuchi: Elvin Jones, Masabumi Kikuchi - Hollow Out (Philips JP, 1973) with Gene Perla Very austere, beautiful. Hmm, I wasn't aware. I'll have to keep an eye out for that.
  19. Masabumi Kikuchi Quintet - End for the Beginning (Philips JP, 1973) Piano – Masabumi Kikuchi Soprano Saxophone, Percussion – Kohsuke Mine Tenor Saxophone, Flute – Hideo Miyata Bass – Yoshio Suzuki Drums – Hiroshi Murakami
