  1. Takashi Kako - Passage (Trio, 1976) with percussionist Sabu Toyozumi
  2. It's an amazing run of albums, for sure. NP:
  3. Next up: Sonny Rollins - What's New? (RCA, 1962) Liebman's Ceremony echoes Sonny's "Jungoso" from this album -- instrumentation-wise and vibe-wise, if not exactly sound-wise (since Lieb comes out of Coltrane more than Rollins).
  4. Now playing: Dave Liebman - Ceremony (Chesky, 2014)
  5. Prompted by a post on another thread:
  6. Nice list, Peter! I could have easily included the Mike Wofford at Maybeck and John Lewis' Piano, Paris 1979 albums on my list too.
  7. Last night and again today: and
  8. Here's the discogs entry: https://www.discogs.com/master/1039903-Stan-Kenton-The-Comprehensive-Kenton No dates included in the listing, but it's all early stuff.
  9. Stan Kenton - The Comprehensive Kenton (Capitol, 2 LPs)
  10. Good call, mjzee. This one -- from around the same time, IIRC -- is also excellent: Not a thoughtless, color-by-number Ellington tribute. MUCH more than that.
  11. I'd vote for Black Glory too. . . . But I'd also lobby to include Mal Waldron Plays the Blues -- since it was made at the same gig, on the same day as Black Glory. They're companion records that go together. Good idea!
  12. Yes, the pianist is Satoh. And the drummer is Takeo Moriyama. That guy doesn't sound like anyone else. His energy level is bonkers!
  13. Terrific record for sure. EDIT Prime EKE here too: All solo, except for the last three cuts.
  14. O.K. That works.
  15. Nice list! But which albums???
  16. Ten solo-piano albums that I love: Richie Beirach - Breathing of Statues (CMP/Magenta) Sir Roland Hanna - Solo Piano: Free Spirit (Storyville) John Hicks - Hick's Time: Solo Piano (Passin' Thru) Andrew Hill - Hommage (East Wind) Earl Hines - Tour de Force (Black Lion) Keith Jarrett - Facing You (ECM) Enrico Pieranunzi - Perugia Suite (EGEA) Mal Waldron - Update (Soul Note) Randy Weston - Marrakech in the Cool of the Evening (Verve) Larry Willis - This Time the Dream's on Me (HighNote) In alphabetical order, not ranked. I've never heard that one. I'm going to add it to my list.
  17. What are your initial impressions, @mjazzg? Just curious.
  18. Now streaming: Sonora Ponceña - Explorando (Inca, 1978) That's always a bummer. . . . I hope you come across a copy soon!
  19. NP: Randy Weston and His African Rhythms Trio - Zep Tepi (Random Chance, 2006) with Alex Blake (b) and Neil Clarke (perc) Weston revisits some of his most well-known compositions on this album: "Blue Moses," "African Sunrise," "Berkshire Blues," "High Fly," and the like.
  20. I'm listening to it too. I hope that BBE obtained access to the master tapes and that the AQ is top shelf. Right now, I only have a blogosphere-sourced MP3 that I stumbled across many years ago. Also, this reissue makes me wonder whether perhaps BBE will be able to reissue other Japanese Victor albums in the future. For example, I would LOVE to see a reissue of Akira Miyazawa's Kiso.
  21. Now playing: Kohsuke Mine - First (Philips Japan/BBE, 1970) with Masabumi Kikuchi, Larry Ridley, and Lenny McBrowne
  22. I totally agree. It's an amazing record. So happy to hear this news! I've wanted this record for a long time.
