  1. Now listening to this opera: Prokofiev: War and Peace / Melik-Pashayev, Kibkalo, Vishnevskaya, Petrov, et al (Melodiya, rec. 1959) Years ago, after buying it used, I discovered that the first CD in this set is defective. So today I began with Scene 8 -- the first of the "war scenes" that make up the second half of the opera -- on disc 2. Yes, both Münch and Roussel are terrific.
  2. Roussel: Symphonies Nos. 3 & 4 / Münch, Orchestre de l'Association des Concerts Lamoureux (Erato)
  3. I'm lucky. My older son loves music, and he's already said that he'd like to have my music collection. Even so, at some point, it would make sense to stop adding more items to it. As for when . . . all I know is that I'm not ready to stop yet.
  4. You ain't lyin'.
  5. It's the second volume of two dedicated to individual songs. There's also a third volume -- much shorter -- dedicated to the three song cycles. EDIT: See the discogs entries below: https://www.discogs.com/master/895657-Franz-Schubert-Dietrich-Fischer-Dieskau-Gerald-Moore-Lieder-Volume-1 (12 LPs) https://www.discogs.com/release/9246781-Franz-Schubert-Dietrich-Fischer-Dieskau-Gerald-Moore-Lieder-Volume-2 (13 LPs) https://www.discogs.com/master/705351-Franz-Schubert-Dietrich-Fischer-Dieskau-Gerald-Moore-Lieder-Volume-3-Die-Schöne-Müllerin-Winterrei (4 LPs)
  6. I just ordered this used 13-LP set of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau singing Schubert Lieder: VG+, VG+ -- and silly inexpensive. 😃
  7. Now spinning: Count Basie - Paradise Squat (Verve, 2 LPs) The beginnings of the New Testament band. Basie always brings a smile to my face.
  8. Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14 -- Op. 131 in C-sharp minor -- performed by the Quartetto Italiano:
  9. Gheorghe, it's a typical Liebman release with mostly originals. See the tracklist below: I'm especially a fan of this incarnation of the Dave Liebman Group -- the early-2000s quartet with guitarist Vic Juris and no pianist. This same lineup* did: - Conversation (Sunnyside), - Blues All Ways (OmniTone), - Further Conversations: Live (True Azul), and - The Turnaround (Jazzwerkstatt). * there was one change -- in the drummer's chair, from Jamey Haddad to Marko Marcinko -- during this run
  10. Can't say that I did.
  11. Now spinning: Etta Jones - If You Could See Me Now (Muse, 1979) with: Tenor Saxophone – Houston Person Vibraphone – George Devens Guitar – Melvin Sparks Keyboards – Sonny Phillips Bass – Sam Jones Drums – Idris Muhammad Percussion – Lawrence Killian
  12. So good. Yeah, I've noticed this too. And not just from Pallas. You wouldn't think that brand new LPs would yield AQ benefits from cleaning. But they often do! (Even for a guy like me with less-than-ideal hearing.)
  13. He's flown under my radar too -- but he plays very well on this date. I just checked Discogs. He also recorded with Mike Mainieri, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Linc Chamberlain, Tony Purrone, and others.
  14. Jim, as far as my own assessment: I don't feel like I've read enough of the book yet to give you a meaningful answer. I'll check back in after I've read more. At that point, I can give an informed thumbs up or down. That said, it's an ASCAP-Deems Taylor award-winning book, so I think it's safe to assume that it's not simply a "fan overview." Also, FWIW, George Clinton wrote the foreward and he gives the book his seal of approval.
  15. It focuses mostly on the music -- but there's also some biographical and sociological aspects too.
