  2. Now spinning: Red Norvo Combo - Vibes a la Red (Famous Door, 1975)
  3. Chris Potter Underground - Follow the Red Line: Live at the Village Vanguard (Sunnyside, 2007) with Adam Rogers, Craig Taborn, and Nate Smith
  4. NP: \ The Jazz Tribe - S/T (Red, 1992) with Bobby Watson, Steve Grossman, Jack Walrath, Walter Bishop Jr., Charles Fambrough, Joe Chambers, and Ray Mantilla
  5. I think that's a great idea. Bring it on!
  6. I'm now listening to this too. One of Dusko's best, imo. R.I.P. Yes, it's a superb record.
  7. Yes indeed! And the "research" makes the daily grind a bit easier to shoulder.
  8. I hope Edel continues to reissue titles in the MPS catalog. So much good stuff there.

O.K. Fair enough. My favorite Wild Bill Davison: a single disc, btw.
  10. I watched this for the first time about a month ago. Re-watched it again last night with my (adult) son: Fantastic. Maybe even better the second time.

@Rabshakeh - I know that you specified that you prefer individual albums over box sets -- but I can't resist recommending one. This JSP set was a real "ear opener" for me, and you can likely find it at a very low price: Tons of tremendous playing from Bud Freeman and Pee Wee Russell in particular.
  12. I'm only aware of two Jamaican jazz musicians. One is Ernest Ranglin (mentioned in the first post), and the other is Monty Alexander. Several of Alexander's records have Jamaican influences, but I don't think they were made there. I have no idea whether there was (or is) any sort of jazz scene on the island.
  13. Just arrived in the mail: The Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band - Off Limits (Polydor, 1971) Rearward-Schema reissue Sad news. Sorry to hear of his passing. He was a very fine musician. Coincidentally, Gojković was in the Clarke-Boland BB. He's a featured soloist on a couple of the tracks on the album I posted above.
  14. Thanks all for your kind words and encouragement. Dan & I are done with the 80s blog. I may circle back and add commentary to the few remaining entries without write-ups -- but I haven't had the gumption to do it lately. So far this year, I've found that I'm burrowing back into the 1970s and discovering much more there -- Japanese jazz, Latin jazz, and more off-the-beaten-path stuff. Without a doubt, it's the period that I feel the most affinity for. I'm hoping, at some point, to return to my original idea of a writing a book about jazz in the 1970s. It would be an expanded version of my 70s blog -- with many more albums and much more details. But that may not happen until I'm retired from my day job ... and that's a few years away. In the meantime, I'm doing "research."
  15. Now spinning: Ken McIntyre - Home (SteepleChase/Inner City, rec. 1975) Excellent.
  16. My favorite Cleo Laine - John Dankworth collaboration: Singing the words of poets isn't your typical jazz fare, and Laine doesn't sound like a typical jazz singer. But I think both of these facts work to her advantage here. I prefer this record over her earlier Shakespeare LP.
  17. I'm listening to "Fatha" Hines in two duo situations. Now: Up next:
  18. Joe Lee Wilson - Secrets from the Sun (Inner City; licensed from Sun Records) and Cat Anderson - Cat Speaks (Classic Jazz; licensed from Black & Blue)
