  1. Ooooh. I've never heard that one -- but it looks interesting!
  2. Prime Art Farmer. Superb!
  3. Very nice. Thanks for sharing that, Rooster.
  4. How interesting. IIRC, Schneiderman was to returning to school when he left TanaReid. But I didn't realize that he'd earned his Ph.D. and was working as an academic now. . . . The story comes full circle. NP: Norman Simmons Quartet - Ramira the Dancer (Spotlite, 1977) with Lisle Atkinson (b), Al Harewood (d), and Ralph Dorsey (perc)
  5. Thanks. Now playing: O Universo Musical de Baden Powell (Sunnyside/Universal, 2 CDs) Disc 2 - A Selection from the Festival Years (1970-1977)
  6. Next up: Eddie Palmieri - Listen Here! (Concord Picante, 2005) with: Nicholas Payton, Brian Lynch - trumpet Conrad Herwig, Doug Beavers - trombone Donald Harrison, Ivan Renta - alto saxophone Michael Brecker, David Sanchez - tenor saxophone John Scofield - guitar Regina Carter - violin John Benítez, Christian McBride - bass Horacio "El Negro" Hernández - drums Giovanni Hidalgo - percussion
  7. More from Akira Tana & Rufus Reid:
  8. I think you might enjoy it, T.D. Schneiderman's playing is very strong. I remember reading an interview with Reid, and he explained how devastated he was when Schneiderman later left the band -- because the two of them had such a tight musical connection. . . . I don't have any of Schneiderman's work as a leader. Any particular album(s) that you would recommend?
  9. Rufus Reid always sounds good.
  10. R.I.P. to a unique artist and musical personality.
  11. Luiz Eça, Bebeto, Helcio Milito [Tamba Trio] - Tamba (RCA Brazil, 1974) Turning out to be a day of Brazilian music. Speaking of . . .
  12. Now playing: Elis Regina - Elis [1973] (Philips Brazil) This was Regina's second album to feature the arrangements & playing of César Camargo Mariano. (Mariano was Regina's husband at the time. In the 1960s, he'd been in the Sambalanço Trio with Airto.) I enjoy everything I've heard from Regina -- but there's an especially jazzy sophistication to this record that sounds different. Less belting out songs, more subtlety. I attribute that to Mariano.
  13. O.K., that makes sense. Thanks for the insight.
  14. Yep. Mann is like Chick Corea in that regard. They're both prolific, and consistency isn't exactly their forte.
  15. It's OK. But not as good as one might hope, given the line-up. There are several other Mann albums from around that time that are better, IMO. Agreed on both points.
  16. The Family of Mann - First Light (Atlantic, 1974) with: - Herbie Mann - flute - David Newman - tenor saxophone, flute - Pat Rebillot - keyboards - Sam Brown - guitar - Tony Levin - bass - Steve Gadd - drums - Armen Halburian - percussion - Carlos "Patato" Valdes - congas (trk 1 only)
  17. Oregon - Winter Light (Vanguard, 1974)
