  1. Sorry to hear of your loss, TTK. But I'm happy that Pyewacket was able to stay with you longer than expected. I've only become a cat person in the last ten years or so. I've always enjoyed cats; I'd just never lived with one. I grew up with dogs. Now we have two cats, and I've discovered how wonderful they are.
  2. More Joe Bonner: with Clint Houston & Billy Hart, rec. 1975 Outstanding!
  3. Next up: Bill O'Connell & the Afro Caribbean Ensemble - Wind Off the Hudson (Savant, 2019)
  4. Now listener to another drummer's album from the 70s that also features guitarist Tommy Bolin: Billy Cobham - Spectrum (Atlantic, 1973) I like this album -- but I like Mind Transplant more.
  5. Shifting gears: Alphonse Mouzon - Mind Transplant (Blue Note, 1975)
  6. More Kikuchi: Elvin Jones, Masabumi Kikuchi - Hollow Out (Philips JP, 1973) with Gene Perla Very austere, beautiful. Hmm, I wasn't aware. I'll have to keep an eye out for that.
  7. Masabumi Kikuchi Quintet - End for the Beginning (Philips JP, 1973) Piano – Masabumi Kikuchi Soprano Saxophone, Percussion – Kohsuke Mine Tenor Saxophone, Flute – Hideo Miyata Bass – Yoshio Suzuki Drums – Hiroshi Murakami
  8. Now listening to another excellent entry in the "Legends of Acid Jazz" series: This CD compiles Turn It On! and Black Vibrations, both recorded in 1971. This music features Stitt throwing down some filthy-and-beautiful Soul Jazz with Don Patterson, Leon Spencer, Melvin Sparks, Idris Muhammad, and others. . . . Notably, these sessions were supervised by Bob Porter, so -- given the players and the production -- it's no surprise that this music is so stinkin' good.
  9. Now: Compiles two of Scott's Prestige albums, both featuring Stanley Turrentine: Hip Soul (1961) and Hip Twist (1962) Last night: Arc Records reissue I enjoyed this one so much that I played it twice.
  10. Now playing: Sonora Ponceña - Explorando (Inca/Fania, 1978)
  11. Speaking of . . . Giovanni Hidalgo - Worldwide (RMM/Sony Discos, 1993) Congas, Cowbell, Bata, Shekere, Guiro, Bongos, Tom Tom, Cymbal, Drums – Giovanni Hidalgo Trumpet, Flugelhorn – Lew Soloff Flutes – Dave Valentin, Mario Rivera Saxophones – Andres Boiarsky, Mario Rivera, Craig Handy Piano – Eric Figueroa, Hilton Ruiz Bass – Eddie Rivera Drums – Ignacio Berroa Other Percussion – Jose Hidalgo, Carlos Rodriguez, Marty Sheller Phew! Such a terrific record. . . . Hidalgo is the hero, but bassist Eddie "Gua Gua" Rivera is the glue.
  12. Next up: Freddie Hubbard - Bolivia (MusicMasters, 1991) with Ralph Moore (ts, ss), Vincent Herring (as, ss), Cedar Walton (p), David Williams (b), Billy Higgins (d), and Giovanni Hidalgo (perc) Giovanni Hidalgo plays congas on the opening cut, "Homegrown," only. He brings so much groove juice that I wish he would have been asked to stick around for more.
  13. Wow! How cool is that! I wish I could have sat in on the class.
  14. Recorded from TCM and watched today: Very good. Nearly great. But not quite.
  15. A terrific record.
  16. Lee Konitz - Inside Hi-Fi (Atlantic, rec. 1956) CD version with two bonus cuts
