  1. More NOLA clarinet: Jimmie Noone, Earl Hines - "At the Apex Club" 1928 (MCA, Jazz Heritage Series Vol. 14) The music on Side A sounds great -- but the cuts on Side B sound even better with the addition of Lawson Buford's tuba (or string bass). Love that bottom end bump! If you'd care to sample, here's Noone's theme song, "Sweet Lorraine":
  2. I really like that one.
  3. Exactly. Long way to go -- for everybody. I will say . . . Bruce Bochy is a quality Manager. He knows how to win. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he leads the Rangers deep into the playoffs.
  4. Roy Ayers Ubiquity - He's Coming (Polydor, 1972) Elemental 180 gm LP reissue When I first heard the opening cut, "He's a Superstar," I assumed it was drawn from Jesus Christ Superstar, the musical. But no. Ayers co-wrote it with Myrnaleah Williams. In fact, several tracks have funkified gospel themes, including the title cut. It's music that's very much "of its time," but I love it. . . . I imagine that when Nicholas Payton talks about Black American Music (BAM), he's talking about precisely this sort of thing, music that ignores the lines between funk, soul, jazz, gospel, pop. It's all stewed together here. and Willie Humphrey - New Orleans Clarinet (Smoky Mary, 1974) Been enjoying the sounds of NOLA lately.
  5. Now playing: Hot Line: The Tenor of Bill Barron (Savoy, 1964) with Booker Ervin, Kenny Barron, Larry Ridley, and Andrew Cyrille Thanks @Ken Dryden !
  6. I'm with you, Rab. I think (good) jazz singers are (good) jazz musicians -- just like instrumentalists. Not less than. Just different.
  7. Now spinning: Harold Mabern - Rakin' and Scrapin' (Prestige, 1969) I love this LP. It's got that irresistible Memphis Soul feeling.
  8. Carol Sloane - As Time Goes By (Baybridge/Eastwind, rec. 1982) So true. What made no impact yesterday might hit you upside the head today. And that's a nice feeling. "Hey, I get it now!"
  9. Five stars aren't enough.
  10. bresna, I'd go if I could! I went several times back in the day. I used to travel regularly on business up to NJ. But I haven't been back in many years.
  11. Wow! 😲 I know original BNs fetch big money -- but I had no idea it was that much.
  12. More Hank Crawford . . . plus Leo Wright: A very soulful Atlantic two-fer.
  13. as heard on this reissue: Oh yeah.
  14. More Shirley Scott:
  15. Now: with Dizzy, Clark Terry, and Lockjaw
  16. Now: Generations - Tough Guys (ICA, 2008) with Jimmy Cobb, Ray Drummond, Ronnie Mathews, Marcus Belgrave, Eric Alexander and Andrew Speight Earlier: Baden Powell - Seresta Brasileira (Milestone, rec. 1988) originally released as Violão Em Seresta on the Idéia Livre label in Brazil
  17. Max Verstappen won again today, taking first place in the Belgian GP at Spa-Francorchamps. That makes 8 GP wins in a row -- and 10 wins out of 12 races for the season. If Verstappen wins one more, he will tie Sebastian Vettel for the most consecutive wins in F1 history. At this point, he seems unbeatable.
  18. Original Argo LP Superb music -- and a superbly evocative cover image.
  19. @Pim - INCREDIBLE haul. So many amazing LPs.
