  1. I pretty much ignored them when they came out too. Definitely a bad decision in retrospect. Over the last few years, I've slowly collected many of them. Whenever I come across one at a reasonable price, I snatch it up. I got lucky about a month ago. I came across three CDs from the series -- none of which I owned -- at a shop for just $2.99 each!
  2. Richard Beirach - ZAL (Trio Japan, 1976) with Terumasa Hino & Yoshiaki Masuo Gorgeous.
  3. Yes indeed! NP: Johnny "Hammond" Smith - Legends of Acid Jazz (Prestige) Originally released as two LPs: Soul Talk (1969) and Black Feeling! (1970)
  4. Perfect Friday afternoon and work is almost done music: So glad ARC Records UK reissued this!
  5. Yes! With Andy Gonzalez, Steve Berrios, and Joe Ford, I suppose it's not surprising that some of Black Sand has a Fort Apache Band flavor. ... I didn't realize until recently that O'Connell sometimes subbed for Larry Willis in that group.
  6. Next up: Geri Allen - The Gathering (Verve, 1998)
  7. NP: Bill O'Connell Latin Jazz Project - Black Sand (Random Chance, 2001) I keep coming back to this disc again and again lately.
  8. NP: Bernard Purdie - Legends of Acid Jazz (Prestige) Originally released as two Prestige LPs: Purdie Good! (1971) and Shaft (1972) This music is WIDE OPEN style-wise, making for some expansive and uncategorizable deliciousness. ... Speaking of deliciousness, whatever happened to tenor saxophonist Charlie Brown? I've only ever heard him on these two Purdie LPs and Ceasar Frazier's 75 -- but he's got got a gritty, low-down, SOULFUL sound. I dig it.
  9. NOTHING wrong with those cuts. You could easily do a helluva lot worse! My mind immediately goes to this disc: Released on Milestone in 1975 -- just like Sonny's Nucleus.
  10. More Cannonball. Cannonball Adderley Sextet - Dizzy's Business (Milestone) Concert recordings from '62 & '63
  11. Very sad news. He was a wonderful musician. R.I.P.
  12. Cannonball Adderley - Sophisticated Swing: The EmArcy Small-Group Sessions (Verve, 1995) Disc 1
  13. Basie's small-group LPs for Pablo are so much fun.
  14. Happy Birthday to Hermeto Pascoal !!! NP: Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo - Só Não Toca Quem Não Quer (Only If You Don't Want It, You Can't Do It) (Som Da Gente / Intuition, 1987) Earlier: The Cannonball Adderley Quintet - Why Am I Treated So Bad! (Capitol, 1967) Both of these are FIVE-STAR records, in this listener's humble opinion.
  15. Hooray for Hermeto! Happy 85th! Will have to spin some of Pascoal's music today to celebrate the occasion.
  16. That is odd. Seems like Hawes has always had a solid (or even better) reputation.
  17. Disc 2 - originally released as The Sun Is Out
  18. Thanks sidewinder. More titles to add to the "To Get" list!
