  1. Not exactly jazz, but sorta:
  2. The last Genesis album that I enjoy from start to finish. Also, the last Genesis album produced by David Hentschel -- and, arguably, the last prog rock album before they became (primarily) a pop/arena rock act.
  3. I think you'll enjoy it, Gheorghe. It's not very ECM-ish. There are a few cuts from YT on the blog, if you'd like to sample.
  4. Lately, I've been running way behind schedule on my blog postings. This evening, I tried to catch up. Here are my entries for the last three weeks -- with personnel, recording dates, and YouTube clips (if available). So far, I haven't written any commentary for them. https://jazzinthe80s.blogspot.com/ Mike Westbrook Orchestra - On Duke's Birthday (hat Hut, 1985) John Hicks - In Concert (Theresa/Evidence, 1986) Gil Evans & the Monday Night Orchestra - Live at Sweet Basil, Vols. 1 & 2 (Gramavision/Evidence, 1985) Chick Corea, Miroslav Vitous, Roy Haynes - Trio Music: Live in Europe (ECM, 1986) Anthony Braxton - Six Compositions (Quartet) 1984 (Black Saint, 1985) Clifford Jordan Quintet featuring Junior Cook - Two Tenor Winner (Criss Cross, 1985) Sheila Jordan - The Crossing (BlackHawk, 1986) Frank Foster, Frank Wess - Frankly Speaking (Concord, 1985) Kenny Barron - New York Attitude (Uptown, 1996) Some really fine music listed above, say I. What say you? It's terrific.
  5. Now on my 'table: I really dig this album. VerPlanck's voice is the key. Her pure, clear tone -- which comes across with a sort of sophisticated innocence -- works perfectly with Wilder's songs. The cherry on top is Mel Lewis' drum work, which keeps the music swinging.
  6. Agree completely. Davis was incredibly gifted -- and perhaps even more driven to succeed. And what a complicated life, full of paradoxes. For example, until just recently, I didn't know that Davis was "uninvited" to JFK's inauguration when the administration learned that he was marrying a white woman. That horrible rejection makes Davis' subsequent embrace of Richard Nixon easier to understand -- even as it alienated him from most African-Americans and cemented his reputation in the black community as an "Uncle Tom." ... Learning about that made me want to dig more deeply into Davis' life. Yet another instance of things being much more complicated than they appear to be on the surface.
  7. Yeah, I hear you. I'm on a bit of a Sammy Davis kick. I've just ordered his autobiography -- the version that combines both Yes I Can and Why Me? Looking forward to reading it.
  8. I've not heard that. Will definitely give it a listen. Thanks for the heads-up. Next up, more Sammy -- with Count Basie:
  9. Sammy Davis Jr. - The Wham of Sam (Warner Archives) This CD compiles Davis' collaborations with arranger/conductor/producer Marty Paich; originally, these cuts were spread across many LPs. Excellent!
  10. Funny you mentioned that because the cut of Bags' coat reminded me of Stevie Wonder's in Summer of Soul. . . . in 1969.
  11. Metaphorically speaking???
  12. Art Pepper Quartet - APQ: The Maiden Voyage Sessions, Vol. 3 (Galaxy)
  13. Music that goes with me to my proverbial desert island.
