  1. I'm listening to another V.A. compilation: They All Played Bebop (Columbia) LP sides 3 & 4 Excellent "leftovers" from the Henri Renaud-produced I Remember Bebop 2-LP set. I bought this album primarily to hear the four cuts by Al Haig -- but there's also good stuff from Duke Jordan, Jimmy Rowles, John Lewis, and others.
  2. Hmmm. That one looks VERY interesting. Thanks for posting @mjzee
  3. Now on my 'table: Various Artists - Singin' the Blues: A Treasury of Great Jazz Singers of the 1930s, '40s, and '50s (MCA, 2 LPs, rel. 1974) Selections previously released on the Decca & Coral labels; issued as part of the "Leonard Feather Series"
  4. I can dig that, for sure. Sometimes, the original release sounds exactly right. No amount of "enhancement" -- extra cuts, alt takes, etc. -- makes it better. In those cases, it's best not to futz with it. Just leave it alone. Back to this jazz vocals masterpiece:
  5. Why did he do that? If he didn't like a cut, would he just delete it? Or was it something else?
  6. Getting my daily fix of the wonderful Carmen McRae: Here to Stay (Decca/GRP) Compiles 2 LPs: By Special Request (Decca, 1956) and Something to Swing About (Kapp, 1960) For some reason, they didn't include one cut from each of the LPs on the CD -- even though there's plenty of room. Don't you hate it when they do that?!?! Oh well. The completist in me doesn't like it, but whatcha gonna do?
  7. Prompted by the Max Roach-talk on another thread:
  8. We win some, and we lose some. It'll all come out in the wash.
  9. For folks like me, who thus far have only been able to stream the music -- since the used marketplace cost of this album (both CD & LP) is ridiculous -- this reissue is manna from heaven. I know the music, but now I get to add it to my collection.
  10. Good idea. I'll give it a try. FOLLOW UP: Good thinking, Dub. Your solution worked.
  11. When I click the link, I run into the pay wall too. I wonder if you get a certain number of clicks with free access, and then -- at some point -- you've got to pay to see the content. That would explain why I could see JazzTimes articles formerly, but I can't now.
  12. 6 of 9 cuts (the ones that are available on YT)
  13. Now: Pete (La Roca) Sims ‎– Turkish Women at the Bath (32 Jazz) Originally released on Douglas, recorded in 1967 Drums - Pete (La Roca) Sims Tenor Saxophone - John Gilmore (!) Piano - Chick Corea Bass - Walter Booker
  14. From one stellar vocalist to another: Betty Carter - Whatever Happened to Love? (Bet-Car, 1982)
  15. Now on my 'table: Carmen McRae / Dave Brubeck - Take Five: Recorded Live at Basin Street East (Columbia, rec. 1961) My version of this LP is the Columbia Special Products "Collectors' Series" reissue with the generic cover shown above. Thankfully, the music is anything but generic.
  16. Now spinning: The beginnings of the New Testament band.
