  1. Nice write-up, Larry. I saw Gottfried perform once many years ago. I don't remember much of his act. But I do remember that it was strange and that I was laughing hard for the entire evening. R.I.P. I and my friend, estimable and typically rathe reserved Chicago Tribune critic (at the time) Dave Kehr, were in tears of laughter almost the whole time.
  2. Now playing: Disc 6 - Schubert: Symphonies Nos. 8 "Unfinished" and 9 My "reference recordings" for these warhorses.
  3. So true. It's a gorgeous record. NP: Charlie Haden - Quartet West (Verve, 1987) The first of Haden's Quartet West records -- and one of the best of them, I think.
  4. Starting off my day with some coffee and some Cannonball. and
  5. Thanks for the heads-up, Mike. Sofrito has been on my to-get list for a long time. I just pre-ordered a copy also.
  6. Carmen McRae - Alive! (Columbia/Sony Legacy) Compiles two Mainstream LPs: Woman Talk (1966) and "Live" and Wailing (1968) A desert-island disc.
  7. Carmen McRae - Here to Stay (Decca/GRP) Early Carmen, recordings from 1955 and 1959
  8. I admire Petrucciani's music very much. But I also realize that each of us is approaching music from different points of view. Often, the thing that one listener values is precisely what turns another listener off. I love that. By the 1980s, that's a given. The balkanization of jazz had happened long before. It's hard -- perhaps impossible -- to name any musician in the 1980s who was "universally" admired. Duke died in 1974. After that, who? Probably no one.
  9. More Sheila Jordan:
  10. Now: Mulgrew Miller - The Countdown (Landmark, 1989) with Joe Henderson, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams
  11. It's one of the Pablo releases where everything comes together perfectly. I hope you enjoy them. I think Sonny Fortune's and Larry Willis' contributions to the Nat Adderley album are as important as the leader's. With Walter Booker and Jimmy Cobb, that was one helluva band, top to bottom.
  12. with Sonny Fortune, Larry Willis, Walter Booker, and Jimmy Cobb Outstanding HH !!!
  13. This week's entries in my 80s jazz survey: Steve Lacy & Mal Waldron - At the Bimhuis 1982 (Daybreak/Challenge, 2006) https://jazzinthe80s.blogspot.com/2022/04/steve-lacy-mal-waldron-at-bimhuis-1982.html Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Al Grey - Jazz at the Philharmonic, 1983 (Pablo/OJC, 1983) https://jazzinthe80s.blogspot.com/2022/04/eddie-lockjaw-davis-harry-sweets-edison.html Nat Adderley Quintet - Blue Autumn (Theresa/Evidence, 1986) https://jazzinthe80s.blogspot.com/2022/04/nat-adderley-quintet-blue-autumn.html Writing has been difficult lately, but I eked out a couple sentences for each entry. If I had more time and energy, they would be better. . . . Oh well. I suppose the music speaks for itself. Any thoughts re: these artists & albums? What say you?
  14. Now on my 'table: The Bruce Forman Quartet with Special Guest Bobby Hutcherson - Full Circle (Concord, 1984) with George Cables, Jeff Carney, and Eddie Marshall My LP has Forman's, Hutcherson's, and Cables' signatures on the cover. I wish I could say that I was present when they autographed the LP, but I wasn't. I bought the used LP online years ago. A previous owner must have have seen them perform.
  15. Oh wow. IMO, there's a ton of great stuff on that list. I think I need to place an order! Here are a few that I know well and would definitely recommend: Muse ************************* 5065 Bonner, Joe The Lifesaver 5185 Lytle, Johnny Fast Hands w/ Houston Person, Mickey Tucker, etc. 5234 Newman, David "Fathead" Resurgence w/ Marcus Belgrave, Cedar Walton, etc. 5242 Sullivan, Ira Ira Sullivan... Does It All w/ Red Rodney, Garry Dial, etc. 5249 Tate, Buddy Hard Blowin' w/ Ray Bryant, George Duvivier, Alan Dawson 5362 Walrath, Jack Wholly Trinity w/ Chip Jackson, Jimmy Madison 5380 Williams, Rod Hanging In The Balance w/ Marty Ehrlich, etc. 5383 Hoggard, Jay Overview w/ Geri Allen, Frederick Waits, Ed Rozie 5385 Brown, Donald Sources Of Inspiration w/ Eddie Henderson, Gary Bartz, etc. Landmark ************************* 1513-2 Hutcherson, Bobby In The Vanguard 1517-2 Hutcherson, Bobby Cruisin' The Bird (& the other Hutcherson Landmarks as well, but IMO these two are the "picks of the litter") 1515-2 Miller, Mulgrew Wingspan 1519-2 Miller, Mulgrew The Countdown - with Joe Henderson Don't sleep on the Jack Walrath and Donald Brown LPs. Neither gets talked about much (at all?) -- but I would rate them both as FIVE-STAR records. Two hidden gems from the 80s.
  16. Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band - Ebulient Roaring Screaming Big Band Sound (BASF/MPS, 2 LPs) U.S. repackaging/reissue of More Smiles and Sax No End
