  1. One of those records that doesn't ever get old.
  2. This afternoon's line up: Yeah, I agree 100%. Golson and Chico O'Farrill are two excellent composer/arrangers.
  3. Perhaps we could build some sort of elaborate and fabulous theory that a comprehensive Bill Barron box set is, in fact, coming soon from Mosaic! Of course, it would all be based on "insider information" from a highly placed individual, who wishes to remain anonymous (naturally). For the sake of simplicity, let's just call this insider "Y." With the right media contacts and internet presence, it's only a matter of time until a large percentage of the U.S. (and even worldwide!) population regards a Bill Barron box set as well nigh inevitable. If enough people believe in it with all their heart, then we CANNOT be denied. It will happen!!! Right?
  4. Giving this another spin today: Booker Little plays wonderfully here, of course -- but, more than anyone's soloing, the thing that's really knocking me out is Little's compositions. Does anyone else hear echoes of Tadd Dameron in Little's writing? Not in a derivative, copy-cat sense. Just an influence.
  5. I think it's very good. Not as good as some (many?) other Waldron-Lacy collaborations, however. Their bar is VERY high.
  6. Next up: Booker Little and Friend* (Bethlehem)
  7. The Super Quartet of Mal Waldron featuring Steve Lacy - Live at Sweet Basil (Evidence)
  8. I probably should have included one of these Nathan Davis albums in my 70s jazz survey.
  9. Prompted by the Nathan Davis posts above: I wish this was more readily available on CD or LP. If we're imagining a Mosaic box, I'd recommend expanding it to include his two Segué LPs as well -- 6th Sense in the 11th House and Makatuka. "From Paris to Pittsburgh"!
  10. Sunday morning Monk. and
  11. Understood. I was just explaining my "workaround" for listening when I'm not near my turntable. In the car or whatever.
  12. Yeah, it would be convenient to have this music in a digital format. But the LPs sound damn good, so I'd probably keep the vinyl even if I had the CDs. BTW, the second disc from The Essential Collection, 1927-1962 compiles some outstanding cuts from the 1947-52 period. I ripped that disc to high bitrate MP3s and always have those files on my phone for on-the-go listening. I love Duke's music from this '47-'52 era -- so having this "sampler" is better than nothing. I queue it up quite a bit.
  13. Next up: The Complete Duke Ellington: 1947-1952 (French Columbia) Sides A / B
  14. with Bill Connors (g), John Taylor (org, p), and Jack DeJohnette (d) I agree!
  15. My grandmother was born in Brooklyn. She was a Dodgers fan -- unlike my grandfather, who pulled for the Giants. My grandmother used to tell me stories of walking to Ebbetts Field to see games -- and how the Dodgers finally beat the Yankees in '55 after being the "Brooklyn Bums" for so long. I never saw any of it, but her stories used to fire my imagination. She liked to tell me baseball stories because I was immersed in baseball as a kid. Playing Little League. Watching the Braves on Ted Turner's "SuperStation." Going to Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium to see games. (Good grades on the report card earned free nosebleed seats!) Collecting baseball cards. All of it. All the energy that I pour in to music these days used to go to baseball.
  16. David Friedman - Of the Wind's Eye (Enja, 1981) with Jane Ira Bloom, Harvie Swartz, and Daniel Humair Excellent. and Cecil McBee Sextet with Chico Freeman - Compassion (Enja, 1979) More excellence.
  17. Yessir! IMO, it's one of McPartland's best LPs -- in no small part b/c of Dodgion.
  18. Bummer. Oh well. Maybe I'll have a different take. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I'm glad he doesn't dismiss the Milestone stuff out of hand. I liked Nisenson's Trane bio, Ascension: John Coltrane And His Quest. It's not mind-blowingly good. But it's good. While we're talking about Sonny Rollins books... Has anyone read this one? Richard Palmer - Sonny Rollins: The Cutting Edge (Continuum, 2004) Just curious.
  19. 2018 Record Store Day reissue
