Today, I ordered Eric Nisenson's book, Open Sky: Sonny Rollins and His World Improvisation (Da Capo, 2000).
Looking forward to reading it.
Has anyone read it? If so, I'd love to hear your impressions.
That looks interesting, jcam. Good stuff?
"The Iguana's Ritual" !!! (and all the rest too)
Love that Blakey band with Bobby Watson and James Williams.
I included that LP in my 70s jazz survey.
Just saw an astonishing fact about this LP on Wikipedia: It got 3 stars in Downbeat when it was first released. Wow. They missed the boat!
I'd be interested to see what the reviewer had to say about the music. Did he think it was too "out"?
Mahler: Symphony No. 3 / Kubelik, Thomas, Bavarian RSO (DG)
as heard in this set:
Postscript:
I'm reminded again that Kubelik's M3 is one of THE recordings of this epic symphony. The work is near the end right now, and these final moments are thrilling!!!
