  1. Another Lalo Schifrin suite for Dizzy ... This CD version also includes The Carnegie Hall Concert. I haven't heard My People in a long while. Thanks for the prompts, jazzbo. ... but now you've got me wanting to hear the original, mono LP release -- which I don't have. Ellington-ophilia is a never-ending condition!
  2. I've been dragging today, so I'm listening to The Cutting Edge. The Sound of Sonny is always a potent pick-me-up. So much LIFE in that horn!
  3. NP: "Lockjaw" Davis - Sweet and Lovely (Classic Jazz; licensed from Black & Blue) with "Sweets" Edison
  4. Moving on to Dizzy's The New Continent, composed & arranged by Lalo Schifrin: Hooray to Lalo for this lush and deliciously soundtrack-y setting to showcase Diz. Not really important but still fun: I have the original Limelight LP with the pop-up gatefold sleeve.
  5. Hampton Hawes - Live at The Montmartre (Arista-Freedom, 1975) with Henry Franklin (b) and Michael Carvin (d); recorded 1971 I really dig this record -- along with the companion LP, A Little Copenhagen Night Music. ... Maybe I'll play that one next.
  6. Thanks for the heads-up on this, Larry. Totally unfamiliar with this one. Looks enticing for sure.
  7. Oh man! So good !!!
  8. Cal Tjader - Puttin' It Together (Fantasy, 1974) Recorded live in January 1973 at Howard Rumsey's Concerts by the Sea Excellent.
  9. Two favorites: and
  10. with Frank Wess & Joe Newman Also, yesterday's entry in my blog.
  11. NP: as heard on: A great band!
  12. Prompted by another thread: Excellent drumming from Jimmy Madison on this one. Speaking of post-Muse Ricky Ford, I really like this record: with Jaki Byard (!), Milt Hinton, and Ben Riley; recorded in 1991
  13. Indeed. It would be a well-fought match for "Most Dapper Drummer" between Chico and Roy Haynes. ... An impossible choice!
  14. I plucked that LP from a local shop's dollar bin years ago. Great music, regardless of the cover.
  15. A few LPs that I've kept just because I like the "big art" and/or the music so much -- even though I've also got them on CD: BTW: I still very actively collect vinyl -- although 98% of it is used. The convenience (and "on-the-go" listening potential) of digital is undeniable. That said, I can't imagine giving up on vinyl -- especially when there's so much out there. ... But I suppose that's another thread.
  16. Now: Earlier: The opening cut, Flora's interpretation of "O Cantador," is incredible -- so beautiful, so moving.
  17. More Roland Kirk, pre-Rahsaan:
  18. Roland Kirk - Domino (Mercury) Over the last few weeks, I keep coming back to this disc. It's always fun to (re)discover something that's been in your collection for years and years. Yes! It seems like KB's innate musicality is always "right there," regardless of context.
  19. Kenny Burrell - Both Feet on the Ground (Fantasy, 1973) Excellent. Most cuts arranged by Benny Golson.
  20. Stanley Turrentine - Nightwings (Fantasy, 1977) and Kenny Burrell - God Bless the Child (CTI, 1971)
  21. NP: I've spent the last few hours updating my blog. Sonny Fortune's Waves of Dreams is today's entry. What a great album!
