  1. More Tootie Heath on another new-to-me disc: Art Farmer, et al - Central Avenue Reunion (Contemporary, 1989)
  2. I really like that LP. Need to pull it out and give it a listen.
  3. Brilliant!!! On Sunday, I picked up this new-to-me CD: Initial impressions after just two listens: This is FANTASTIC. Some of the most interesting playing that I've heard from Iverson. Tootie and Ben Street sound great too. If you've ever wanted to hear Iverson in a "non-Bad Plus" trio context, I'd recommend beginning here. Now, I suppose I need to track down the two studio records they've made. Anyone who's heard them have any thoughts?
  4. Disc 4 A fantastic box set.
  5. Switching gears a bit. . .
  6. Jason Moran - Black Stars (Blue Note) with Sam Rivers, Tarus Mateen, and Nasheet Waits
  7. Thanks gents!
  8. Oh yeah. That makes perfect sense. Never put that together.
  9. Such great music. All of the Candid stuff is stellar. And a wonderful cover photograph too. Mingus' inherent bearishness -- look at that enormous right paw -- contrasting with the dapper man-about-town in the bowler hat. Is this another Mingus take on Ellington? His resurrection of Baron Mingus?
  10. Great pix, Larry! Thanks for sharing! I guess I'll share a few too. My wife Lynet and I just celebrated our 26th wedding anniversary by motorcycling up to North Georgia, where we rented a small cabin for four days. No TV. No internet. No mobile phone. We were UNplugged. Both the motorcycling and relaxation were outstanding. Here's a couple pix from a moto-ride. It rained on us a bit, so Lynet is kitted out in her rain gear. Here we are relaxing on the porch of the cabin that we rented: The view from the porch was nothing but TREES. Here's a 180-degree panoramic shot: And here's a recent pic of our kids: Left to right: Aaron (with typical smirk), Carrie, Jacob, and Elena. We're celebrating Aaron's birthday and Jake's graduation. Family & friends. Music. Motorcycling. That's what I like best. I'm too vain to get all my gray colored!
  11. Today, I took one of my occasional trips up to Chattanooga to visit McKays. It's always great fun to see what they have. Here's what I brought home: JAZZ - Bill Evans - Empathy + A Simple Matter of Conviction (Verve) - Art Farmer, Frank Morgan, a.o. - Central Avenue Reunion (Contemporary) - Wood Herman - The Raven Speaks (Fantasy) - Ethan Iverson, Albert "Tootie" Heath, Ben Street - Live at Smalls (Smalls Live) - Frank Kimbrough Trio - Lonely Woman (Mapleshade) - Jason Moran - Soundtrack to Human Motion (Blue Note) - Herbie Nichols - Love, Gloom, Cash, Love (Bethlehem) - Oscar Peterson Trio with Milt Jackson - Very Tall (Verve) - Edward Simon Trio - Poesia (CamJazz) - Steve Turre - Rhythm Within (Antilles) OTHER STUFF - Roseanne Cash - The Essential Roseanne Cash (Sony Legacy) - Liszt: Selected Hungarian Rhapsodies; Czardas Obstine / Alfred Brendel (Vanguard) - Mozart: Piano Sonata in A minor, K. 310 and other works / Alfred Brendel (Vanguard)
  12. Erroll Garner's Complete Concert by the Sea (3 CDs) for $5.39 at amazon.com
  13. Franco D'Andrea Trio - Bud and Lennie (Philology)
  14. Louis Armstrong - Satchmo: A Musical Autobiography (Verve; originally Decca) Discs 1 & 2
  15. That's my favorite Ray Bryant record. It's been a steady diet of Erroll Garner for me today. Disc 1
  16. Erroll makes me feel good.
  17. Disc 1 - The Small-Group Sides I think Vol. 1 is just a shade better. But I'm with you: Vol. 2 is no collection of barrel-scrapings. Both volumes are well worth hearing.
  18. I'd agree with that assessment -- if only because the music on Castles of Ghana is SO POWERFUL. But the entire series is such a compelling and unique body of work! It's ALL "unmissable" in my book.
  19. Now this: Solo piano.
  20. Bobo Stenson Trio - Serenity (ECM)
  21. To all the dads out there, HAPPY FATHER'S DAY.
