Thanks for sharing, Jeff!!! For any who haven't already read it, I'd definitely recommend this book about Gennett records:

New John Scofield Joe Lovano collaboration on Impulse! - Past Present
HutchFan replied to erwbol's topic in New Releases
I'm not sure the horn section adds much. I'd rather just hear the trio. I dug the horn section. Thought they added some interesting textures. But I certainly can see how others might prefer the music "stripped down." You can get that same trio -- less the horns -- on En Route. I haven't gotten 'round to that one yet. -
Happy Birthday, Mulgrew Miller, you are truly missed.

Amen to that. So much wonderful music... -
New John Scofield Joe Lovano collaboration on Impulse! - Past Present

I thought that this 2007 Scofield record was absolutely brilliant: I'm looking forward to hearing the new Sco/Lovano collaboration. -
Thanks for sharing that, bluesoul. Those are some lovely recollections from Martin Speake.

Stuff sucks! I have the same problem. If your stuff is good, it doesn't suck!

What live music are you going to see tonight?
HutchFan replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
this post makes me painfully aware that English is not my first language. Well, it's certainly not written in the language of jazz! The language of jazz is but one of many dialects in the Babel that is music. Uli, you have a second language (maybe more!). Like most Brits I'm painfully aware that I can only manage one. As a mono-lingual American, I second that opinion. But I've also got to say that those idioms are positively delicious -- even if I don't understand all of them! "Two nations divided by a common language," eh? -

Tomorrow night, I'll be taking a stroll down memory lane. I'm going to see Col. Bruce Hampton & the Aquarium Rescue Unit reunion show at the Georgia Theater in Athens. Back in the day, I saw them perform dozens of times. In fact, I was at their show at the Georgia Theater the night before they recorded their first album in 1992. From their website: -

Warne Marsh's version of "A Time for Love" from the album All Music. Gorgeous.
-
Some of my favorite records with Andrew Cyrille as a sideman are John Carter's "Roots and Folklore" series -- particularly Castles of Ghana and Fields. Incredible drumming on incredible records.
-
This is my first post. Richie is AMAZING - I'm the only jazz singer that's ever recorded with him and we have a second record coming out in 4 weeks - the name of it is "Varuna." There are 3 brand new Beirach compositions (w/my lyrics) and you'll find 2 of his songs (Elm and Nightlake) on our first recording "The Duo Session." (recorded 1993) I had to post because on your list I also recorded with Joe Bonner in the 80's on his "New Beginnings" album! I had the good fortune of sitting in with Joe Henderson when Joanne Brakeen was playing as well! All 3 are incredible musicians and certainly deserve more recognition. Laurie Antonioli Laurie, thanks for posting! I have your record with Richie. It's GREAT! Thanks for the heads-up on the new one. I'll keep an eye out for it.

I'd never heard Taylor's Pause and Think Again before. I'm just now listening to one of the tracks via YT. Wow. Wonderful music. Thank you for the heads-up. I'm going to order that box.

Definitely.........and by association, the Carmell Jones Select. Yes! The Gerald Wilson set is definitely one of my favorite Mosaics. I listen to it often -- particularly discs 1 & 2.

I need some good Dexter Gordon Recommendations
HutchFan replied to JCR1992's topic in Recommendations
And I have a question - for myself, but in the belief that confession is good for the soul: How did this so-called "Dexaholic" never buy this? Was I never aware of it? I have a hard time believing that. Did my awareness pre-date my appreciation for Gene Ammons and I didn't want to hear a tenor battle? (don't think so because the 1940s 'battle' recordings were some of the earliest Dex I owned.) I am proud (and yet somewhat ashamed) to say that the OJC reissue is on it's way from a seller in GA so at least I'll be able to say that I finally heard this one soon. And only 25 years late, give or take. Better late than never. -
Not to belabor the obvious, but the term "overlooked" could be applied to nearly every jazz saxophone players these days. A few months ago, I saw David Liebman in NYC and there were maybe 20 people in the audience. And Liebman is an NEA Jazz Master!

George Wein Remembers Newport
HutchFan replied to mjzee's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Wein's autobiography -- Myself Among Others: A Life In Music -- is very interesting. I enjoyed it a great deal. -
Finally got around to ordering this set:

Good call. I recently picked up Arild Andersen's ECM box that collects his his 1970's quartet albums. Aaltonen is on a couple of them, and he really impressed me. I'll have to check out those more recent TUM recordings. Is there a particular one that you've enjoyed most? Yeah! American-African Blues is one of my favorite records!!! How about Pete Christlieb? No, not Pete Christlieb. ??? You don't think he's overlooked? Or you just don't like his playing? ??? I think he's NOT overlooked. And I like his playing!!! Oh. O.K. I guess I think of him as overlooked since he's always released his records on small, indie labels -- except for the one he made with Warne Marsh on Warner Brothers back in the 70s. ...But I'm glad you think he's NOT overlooked; he deserves to be well-known.

Both on TUM Thanks! I'll check 'em out.
