Dizzy Gillespie - Bahiana (Pablo, 1975)
with Roger Glenn (fl, b fl, vib); Al Gafa (g); Michael Howell (g); Earl May (b); Mickey Roker (d); Paulinho da Costa (perc)
Oh wow. Hadn't heard that mjazzg. I would really appreciate any info, if you're able to dig it up.
I'd expect TOP NOTCH quality & sound at that price point. I'll definitely pass if that's not the case.
Yeah. Different time, different vibe. If you dislike the sound of a Fender Rhodes, you should stay away from Don't Look Back.
Myself, I LOVE that sound. In fact, I think Don't Look Back is an all-around fan-stinkin'-tastic record.
Speaking of... I just discovered that the U.K.-based company Pure Pleasure has just reissued Don't Look Back -- in limited edition vinyl-only format. After some poking around on the web, I found several US retailers that stock it for about $35. I very rarely buy new vinyl -- especially new vinyl at that price point. But I think I'm going to make an exception in this case. This music is SO good that I want to upgrade my blogosphere-sourced download with the "real thing."
Oh man. That's so bad that it's good.
Count Basie - Basie Jam at the Montreux Jazz Festival 1975 (Pablo)
Interesting to hear Johnny Griffin, who plays like his normal bad-ass self, in this context -- since he wasn't a Granz jam session regular.
and
Art Tatum - Masterpieces (MCA, 2-LPs)
Everything here sounds great -- but today I'm really enjoying the bluesy band tracks with Joe Turner's vocals.
June Christy with the Lou Levy Sextet - Impromptu (Discovery, rec. 1977)
with Frank Rosolino, Jack Sheldon, Bob Cooper, Bob Daugherty, and Shelly Manne
Some exceptional playing by Rosolino here.
Count Basie - Basie Jam (Pablo, rec. 1973)
with Zoot Sims, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Harry "Sweets" Edison, J.J. Johnson, Irving Ashby, Ray Brown, and Louie Bellson
No doubt! It's a classic in my house too -- as are all of Waldron's Enja recordings.
